Exclusive Album Premiere Of Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers OCULTUM New Album BUENA MUERTE

"Buena Muerte" is a concatenated anthem that explores death as a central theme, highlighting its benevolence towards a human being who cries out in all ways for its inevitable extinction. "Buena Muerte" is, in turn, an experiment in resurgent creativity where a vibe of the 70s, metal and chaos converge, on the dilapidating base of the heavy and crushing doom stoner that OCULTUM sacredly cultivates. Submerge yourself into a pool of acid joy and find the subaquatic tomb where all gone souls dance. Sadness and drugs builds character.

You can listen to this brilliant and hard hitting album below thanks to the awesome folks over at Purple Sage PR and Heavy Psych Sounds.

Band History

OCULTUM started when they decided to enter the studio to record their debut album titled "Ceremonia Oculta Primitiva" (2015), this material was reworked and, after many hours, it was finally released in a self-produced deluxe edition of Digipack CD Pro 3 panels (500 copies sold out) and on Pro Tape by Manifectation Records of Antofagasta (100 copies sold out).

After some changes the group decided to continue as a trio and in 2019, OCULTUM released their second album "RESIDUE", 4 extremely heavy songs/trips that reach 50 minutes crushing silence, with a psychedelic and valve production, this album takes you to their own characteristic sound, a hard vision of how Doom, Stoner and Sludge should sound at the end of the planet. It has been released on Tape and Vinyl on Interstellar Smoke Records (Poland), on Pro Tape by Manifectation Records from Antofagasta (100 copies sold out) and on CD on Black Bow Records (England) being signed directly by the label owner, John Davis, vocalist of the brutal doom band, Conan. In his words: "Honestly, if you think that Doom is dying and is becoming too modern and dependent on generic reference points, then you should check it out because Ocultum will fucking KILL you."

We are currently releasing with force and conviction our third album, "Buena Muerte", a concatenated anthem that explores death as a central theme, highlighting its benevolence towards a human being who cries out in all ways for its inevitable extinction. "Buena Muerte" is, in turn, an experiment in resurgent creativity where a vibe of the 70s, metal and chaos converge, on the dilapidating base of the heavy and crushing doom stoner that OCULTUM sacredly cultivates.

Thanks to Purple Sage PR for the all of the details.

Buena Muerte will be available to buy on CD/DD/Vinyl via Heavy Psych Sounds from Friday 28th February 2025.

2.Buena Muerte†

3.Fortunato's Fortune (interlude)

5.Enki's Return

Review

Chilean Doom/Stoner Metallers Ocultum return with their third full length album Buena Muerte and have teamed up with the mighty behemoth record label Heavy Psych Sounds for this record. Nothing much else has changed for Ocultum with the band providing 1970’s inspired Proto-Metal carnage with a heavy Psychedelic and lysergic reliance of modern day thought provoking grooves. The music has a dizzying and dazzling array of down-tuned FUZZY sounds that have a nightmarish quality to them.

This vision is brutally realized within the excellent opening track Drugged Wizard Walks By which is purely instrumental with a seedy underbelly of classic sounding Sludge, Doom and Stone Metal passages with influences from Electric Wizard, Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus and BONGZILLA.

The lyrics and vocals are inspired by the nihilistic tones of EYEHATEGOD and Church Of Misery which dominate the musical landscape from the second track Buena Muerte†. The mood is completely chaotic and destructive with Ocultum unleashing “HELL ON EARTH” with their frenzied and crazed fast-paced guitars which have a manic personality to them.

There’s a sense of warped melody to the opening two tracks despite the SATANIC nature of them all which gives Ocultum such an unpredictable nature. The third track Fortunato's Fortune (interlude) is purely an exercise of instrumental Doom Metal but the band achieve a lot within the short running time as they add moments of nightmarish Drone textures and subtle OCCULT based imagery within their music.

The final two tracks of Last Weed On Earth and Enki’s Return is perhaps the most devious, sinister, heaviest and action parts of the album with Ocultum demonstrating a level of AMPLIFIER DISTORTED heaviness that the likes of Electric Wizard and SUNN 0))) would be proud to call their own. Subtle flashes of crazed Doom/Stoner Metal guitars feels like they’re being played with actual chainsaws and I mean that as a huge compliment.

Last Weed On Earth lasts for over eleven minutes and is the most demented track contained on the album where anything goes especially with the vocals. Perhaps one of the meanest STONER based tracks I’ve had the pleasure to listen to this year. With subtle flashes of Psych Metal or THC inspired Heavy Metal, Ocultum aims high for this song and delivers the goods throughout.

Enki’s Return is another track that runs for over eleven minutes and has a looser and faster style of music being delivered from all angles. The vocals move slightly over to the “EXTREME” side of Doom/Sludge Metal but the first rate use of SONIC and SPACED OUT themes gives Ocultum another wicked way of entertaining the WEEDIAN masses with.

Ocultum have called upon MONOLORD’s very own Esben Willems to master the album at his famed Studio Berserk residence and he provides a murky backdrop for Occultum to rule their own fucked up SATANIC based domain. Buena Muerte is an epic slice of Occult based Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal that isn’t afraid to scare the HELL OUT OF YOU and leave you begging for more punishment.

Ocultum have upped their game for this release and offer their most definitive and original record to date.

Bio:

OCULTUM started on 2009, since then the band has been solving different line-up changes, redefining their sound and musical approach. During 2013, OCULTUM decided to enter the studio to record their debut album entitled, “Ceremonia Oculta Primitiva”, this material was reworked and after many hours, it was finally self released on 2015 in a deluxe Digipack CD edition (500 sold out copies) and in Pro Tape by Manifectation Records (100 sold out copies).

Currently, OCULTUM have finished his second album “Residue”, 4 concise and extremely heavy songs that reach the 50 minutes blasting the silence, psychedelic and valvular production, this album takes you to their own carachteristic sound, a harsh vision of how Doom, Stoner and Sludge must sound at the end of the planet.

Ocultum sound create a lysergic journey, a portal to the human inferno, trying to fuse the listener mind under the magic of the old 70`s sabbathic sound, blended with bone-crushing riffing and drumming, fiercely lobotomizing the senses.

Review:

Ocultum's debut album was originally released last year but somehow it passed me by. I've been asked by Raul (on multiple occasions) to review the album. So here is my review of Ceremonia Oculta Primitiva.

Ceremonia Oculta Primitiva is dirty sludge ridden slab of Doom/Stoner Metal with harsh vocals to match. This style of music is a common theme within the South American Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal scene and the guys don't break any new ground with this release. What they do offer is a heavy and pulsating listen from start to finish. Taking influence from the more heavier and influential bands of the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal scene. Ocultum's music has a vast psychedelic feel and the vocals give this album a real menacing feel.

The songs are not your standard 3 or 4 minute fast-paced numbers, nope – Ocultum create songs that last between 7 to 10 minutes in length. It allows the band to create heavy nightmarish sounds where the guitars are down-tuned low and the bass guitar has a menacing chainsaw effect. If you like your music played at a slow pace but with plenty of heavy distorted atmospheric noises then this album is for you.

All of the songs have a constant array of depressing sludge riffs but the band show hints of originality from time to time especially where they unleash a more straight-forward stoner riff. It's quite a stark contrast from the heavier sounds Ocultum creates . Though I do have some issues with the album. The production for one is sloppy in places. Parts of the album sound fantastic but there are other parts where you can hardly hear the instruments being played. Instead more focus is given to the vocals than the instruments themselves. Don't let that minor criticism put you off as Ocultum's debut album is a superb album overall.

Standout tracks have to be: The Faceless King, Tumba de Siglos and Black River.

If you want something to FUCK UP YOUR WORLD for 60 minutes or so then look no further as Ceremonia Oculta Primitiva will leave you in a world of pain and I mean that as a compliment.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
