Review

Rosa is the new full length album from Italian Sludge/Noise/Stoner Rockers ZOLLE and the band are back with another buoyant new record which is outlandish and offers the listener a brilliantly uplifting good time. Embracing the wilder side of Stoner Metal with a playful attitude with a plethora of Psychedelic Noises, Ambient Sounds and a fantastic sense of Doom-Pop melodies spliced throughout the whole album.

Opening track Pepe feels partially inspired by TORCHE in places but with ZOLLE adding a chaotic energy with Sludge Rock beats that’s quite aggressive and fast paced when it wants to be. Shades of Experimental energy appear that has a slight Melvins vibe but allowing ZOLLE to perform the music they’re wonderfully known for.

Second track Lana continues with the frantic Sludge/Noise Rock theatrics with the heavy pounding drums from Stefano building up a wall of Psychedelic Waves for Marcello to add his jagged guitars that combine for another energetic round of high voltage Sludge/Stoner Rock. ZOLLE have a great talent of writing sublime uplifting songs without the need for harsh abrasive atmospherics and this track proves that point whilst still bringing a fresh round of HEAVY GROOVES to head-bang to.

Third track Toffolette e Zuccherini is a more subdued track with a lush sounding Post-Rock score and exquisite vocals appearing with soulful Doom-Pop melodies soon changing into more heavy based Sludge/Stoner instrumental jams. This is perhaps my favourite track on the album and perhaps one of my favourite ever tracks that I’ve heard from ZOLLE. As the uplifting energy from the track is highly infectious with the track being constantly HEAVY without the need of being HEAVY at the same time.

ZOLLE continues with the Noise Rock angle for the next few tracks of Merda, Pompon and Pois with that aggressive Sludge/Stoner melodic angle that’s being the more dominant attitude of the album which can be quite flashy and overpowering at times. However, the addictive and warm natured energy allows ZOLLE to experiment across the musical spectrum especially with the fabulous vocals that are quite catchy even when set against the Punk Rock backdrop that appears from time-to-time.

The final stages of the album is where the heaviest and surreal moments of the record appear whilst still retaining the zany creative attitude of the earlier stages of the album with tracks such as Confetto, Fiocco Video and Maialini e Maialine being the other standout tracks on an already wild, varied and highly inventive album such as Rosa.

Rosa is perhaps ZOLLE’s most brilliantly original record to date and may end up becoming one of the most exciting and wildest albums to be released this year. Another ALBUM OF THE YEAR contender is right here. Absolutely superb. No question.

Noise/Doom/Stoner Rockers ZOLLE Premiere New Song FIOCCO From Upcoming New Album ROSA

Zolle return with an album where the heavy parts are lovingly heavier and the melodic parts are monstrously more melodic than in the past. Imagine Crowbar, on a diet, singing The Ramones refrains at an AC/DC show with Metallica as an opening act.

ROSA is the Italian word for PINK but it also means ROSE, the flower. ROSA tells, in a universal language, of different elements united by belonging:PINK, as artwork and titles suggest.

Recorded and mixed by Giulio Ragno Favero (Zu, Teatro degli Orrori, OvO) in December 2023 At Macina Studio in Camposampiero (Pd) and mastered by Giovanni Versari (Muse, Verdena) at la Maestà Studio.

ROSA is released by Subsound Records. The Artwork is from Berlikete and Eeviac.

Zolle are an incisive, unconventional rock duo, featured by playful voices and melodies, powerful guitar riffs and super energetic drums. ROSA is conceived in the countryside close to the Po river.

ZOLLE finds their maximum expression playing live:smiling approach, guaranteed vibration.

Stefano and Marcello have been playing together since the last century, since 1995,they come from MoRkObOt, Viscera/// and Klown (and beyond). Enjoy!

You can listen to the new track FIOCCO from the upcoming new album Rosa due out on May 3rd 2024 via Subsound Records

Review

Macello is the 4th full length album from Italian Noise/Doom/Stoner Metal duo ZOLLE. The highly talented duo seem to be going back to their earlier sound on this album. As the album is quite different to their last record with the band playing a less experimental blend of Doom/Stoner music and focusing on a more groove-laden Psychedelic sound.

The album is perhaps a more twisted version of Floor and Torche with the emphasis on more Hard Rock tendencies as the band include a cool Classic Hard Rock/Heavy Metal atmosphere to the album. Macello also has a party-going atmosphere which allows this album to have a huge sense of fun to it all and the Psychedelic sounds mean things stay heavy throughout the 26 minute runtime of the album.

Opening song – S’OFFRE – has the classic distorted guitars and heavy drumming sound that ZOLLE are instantly known for. The Psychedelic and twisted vocals are digitally distorted but they have an easy-going charm against the backdrop of heavy pounding Sludge/Stoner/Doom-Pop riffs. The Noise Rock atmospherics is what allows this album to become quite heavy places and the music will surprise you at how dark the album can really be.

Second song – D’IO – is another finely tuned slice of Psychedelic weirdness with an easy-going atmosphere to it all. ZOLLE excel in creating a Sludge/Stoner Rock party attitude that’s quite addictive and fast=paced at the same time. The kinetic drumming of Stefano is perhaps the best part of this song with the heavy guitars from Marcello playing a more laid-back style of riffs. The song is entirely instrumental and ZOLLE create their own blend of Doom-Pop nostalgia that fans of Torche will no doubt appreciate.

Third song – M’IO – carries on the twisted Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal theatrics with relish and even sees the band change their style of music for different parts of the album. The music is constantly changing and is perhaps one of the most creative songs on the album. The song also contains some of the heaviest sounds on the album when ZOLLE go full on DOOM/SLUDGE METAL mode that may surprise a few folks along the way.

One of the main strengths of this album is how ZOLLE aren’t afraid to use their Hard Rock/Heavy Metal influences on this album and just run away with whatever crazy ideas come to mind. Even the digitized/electronic vocals may seem crazy at first but in the context of this album alone then ZOLLE are right on the money with the creative choices they’ve made on this album.

Other great songs to check out are: M’ACETTA, L’ARA D’ANNATA and L’AURA. As ZOLLE continue to impress with their brilliantly weird and addictive style of Hard Rock.

Macello is very short at 26 mins but it’s what ZOLLE do with those 26 minutes that is one of the best things about this album. As Macello is never boring and the album feels like it’s on for twice as long and that’s down to the sheer amount of addictive sounds that will have you wanting more.

If you’re new to the world of ZOLLE then this album is the best place to start. For long-time fans of the band then be prepared for another brilliantly entertaining and turbo-charged album that maybe my favourite album from them yet.
