ACIDEMIA is a FUzzed Up Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal band from Brazil and they embrace the “WEEDIAN” ideology style of music in a big way on their debut album Podridão. The album is also highly progressive with the length of the songs contained on the album. It’s inspired by the usual greats of Doom/Stoner Metal but manages to say a few interesting grooves of their own with the band never outstaying their welcome.

The album consists of 7 tracks with each showing a different style of Sludge, Doom and Stoner Metal with a creepy sideline in different soundscapes and textures which is put to great use of the excellent opening song Névoas de Ácido. ACIDEMIA plays down-tuned Fuzzy guitars with an Electric Wizard seedy outlook with gloomy vocals to match. The song moves at a fantastic slow-pace which allows the band to bring a dirty underbelly of Doom/Stoner Metal sounds to the forefront on the song.

Second song - Mórbido - is a more aggressive and speeded up style of music with a more claustrophobic sound that brings an almost Punk based energy to the record. A more Thrashier style of music is embraced that soon settles down to other elements of droned out Doom based music that is parts Sabbath, SLEEP and Electric Wizard. The song can be too slow in places but this is still one of the strongest tracks on the album and the band don’t let up from here.

The remainder of the album sees ACIDEMIA lay down their own exciting blend of Psychedelic and Trippy Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal with the powerful “FUZZ” grooves being the best part of the album. The band have also written some epic guitar solos that fully explore the “Spaced Out” heaviness of the modern day underground. IT seems ACIDEMIA have done their homework before making is album by listening to all of the classic albums from the legendary bands of the scene and giving it their own personal and creative makeover. Listen to the standout songs - Existência, Podridão and Caximbo for more evidence of this and tell me you’re not impressed by these tracks.

The album is a challenging listen with its 73 minute running time but it’s also an exciting and action-packed musical adventure especially with the trippy CHURCH OF MISERY and LSD inspired soundbytes that show up on different places on the album.

My only minor complaint is with the sound of the album. In most parts the album sounds great, however in others I felt the sound was too low and too weak, Though, this is only for a few moments and it shouldn’t stop you enjoying this album.

Podridão is one of the best debut albums I’ve listened to and experienced from the South American Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal scene.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
