Psychedelic Stoner Rockers KALAMATA return from a lengthy nine year absence to release their long awaited third album ZENOSYNE. I’m a huge fan and admirer of their previous two albums so I was very excited when I received this album to listen to. KALAMATA have redefined their music since their 2017 album with further emphasis on progression which puts their music into the land of Post-Rock and Post-Metal though still keeping their classic Stoner Rock instincts intact.

The album is split into five tracks under the banner of “THERE IS NO COMING BACK” which allows KALAMATA to create a different musical persona for the record. The sound is dense, heavy, thick and superbly melodic which shows the band exploring different musical avenues with some epic SONIC melodies and sludgy distortions coming from the stunning guitar work of Peter Jaun. Sometimes the band feels inspired by the likes of Karma To Burn, Yawning Man, Monkey3 and Earthless whilst for the heavier parts you can hear echoes of Russian Circles and Pelican which adds a whole level of atmospheric dominance.

Everything is wonderfully melodic and gloriously cinematic which allows the music to be described as “FULL BLOWN TECHNICOLOUR” which is down to the great use of Desert Rock, Ambient Rock and Spaced Out environments where it can be grounded and totally outrageous at the same time.

This also feels like KALAMATA’s most personal record to date with an emotionally engaging core developing on the majority of the tracks. My favourite tracks are THERE, NO and BACK which sees KALAMATA in a more reflective mood which not only challenges the listener but also sees the band playing some of the heaviest and most daring music of their career. The band do seem to have taken influence from classic soundtracks and different cultures for the making of this album as it can be quite trippy, surreal and totally left-field for an Instrumental Rock album.

The stunning rhythm section of Niki Hosseinian-Sereshki (Bass) and Olly Opitz (Drums) provide a clinical backdrop of grounded grooves for Peter to work his psychedelic guitars upon. Niki, Olly and Peter are quite forward thinking with how to deliver their music when weaving Post-Rock themes into the wider picture that ZENOSYNE fully represents. 

ZENOSYNE is an instrumental album that has it all which makes this such a brilliantly engaging and warm-hearted record. The journey has the same importance as the destination the record fully takes the listener upon. With a free spirited direction, ZENOSYNE does have some great “JAM” based moments where KALAMATA plays fast and loose with the rules of Instrumental Rock/Metal. 

The album has superbly realised production values which gives this a highly atmospheric and subversive sound especially when the Ambient sound effects linger in the background which leaves you on the edge of your seat thinking where this great album will take you next. 

KALAMATA may have been gone a long time but on the evidence with ZENOSYNE they’ve been sorely missed and will surely be wanting to make up for valuable lost time. They have delivered an outstanding album that will no doubt be considered one of the year’s best instrumental rock albums before the year is out.

Psychedelic Stoner Rock Trio KALAMATA Announces New Album Zenosyne. First Single Streaming.

With Zenosyne, German psychedelic stoner rock trio Kalamata returns after years of change, upheaval and relentless touring — and simultaneously sets out toward something entirely new. Released June 26th via Copper Feast Records (London/ Amsterdam) and Made of Stone Recordings (Thessaloniki), the album marks the band’s most personal, atmospheric and daring work to date.

The band tells us about the track: "Coming is the pure essence of Kalamata. Heavy, hypnotic drive with moments of quiet vulnerability.“

The title Zenosyne — the sensation that time seems to accelerate as we grow older — forms the conceptual frame for a record that refuses to dictate a single meaning. The five track titles There / Is / No / Coming / Back open a space in which every listener can find their own story: slowing down, appreciating moments, valuing people, using the time we have, or confronting the inevitability of change.

Much has happened since the last album. Kalamata have toured across Europe, endured lineup changes, navigated personal crises and lived through heavy chapters — yet never lost faith in their music. Zenosyne is the distilled essence of these years: a fragment of lived life, captured in sound.

Recorded in late 2025 with renowned producer Ingo Bednarek at his studio in Hannover, Germany, the album represents a shift in approach. While the first two records were raw, direct and recorded live, this time the band focused intensely on detail, texture and sonic experimentation. Fuzz collides with fragile melodies, heavy riffs dissolve into shimmering effects, hypnotic repetition expands into cinematic vastness. The mastering by Role Wiegner (Tonmeisterei, Oldenburg, Germany) adds depth, warmth and a sense of physical presence.

The artwork draws from an old legend of Kalamata’s hometown Hildesheim: the tale of the Hildesheim Maiden who, after finding her fiancé struck dead by lightning, wanders lost through the dark forest until a distant evening bell guides her back to life. The tower from which that bell rang is still known today as the Kehrwiederturm — the “Come Back Tower.”

This story of loss, disorientation and the call to return resonates with the emotional tension of the album, without illustrating it literally. Zenosyne is not a concept album, but a work full of echo chambers.

Musically, Kalamata build on their signature strengths — hypnotic depth, massive bass foundations, trance-like guitar arcs, dynamic drumming — and push them further. Where earlier reviews praised “massive stoner riffs,” “psychedelic soundscapes,” “hypnotic epics” and “a pull you can’t escape,” Zenosyne reveals a band that not only masters these elements but rearranges them with newfound maturity, intensity and vulnerability.

Zenosyne is not just a third album. 

It is a turning point.

A reflection and a departure.

A work about time, change and the things that remain when everything else moves.

Aussie Psych Rockers Turtle Skull latest expedition into Neo-Psychedelic territory with their latest record Being Here is quite muted where the Doom/Stoner Metal aspect compared to their acclaimed 2020 record Monoliths. The band have lost two members since then and have gained Ally Gradon on Vocals and Synth duties. Being Here is still a glorious celebration of Heavy Psychedelic and Sonic based passages with a subtle Sludge Rock environment being stripped back that reminds me of Church Of The Cosmic Skull, Hawkwind and King Gizzard & The Lizzard Wizzard throughout.

Don’t forget the fuzzed up AMPLIFIER attitude of BLACK SABBATH with modern core Doom-Pop sound developing from the very start. The record is quite ethereal and slightly trippy over into Noise Rock, Indie Rock, Grunge and Pop surroundings which builds superbly from the sublime opening tracks of Being Here, Apathy and Into The Sun. 

There’s a dark and gloomy vibe appearing within the lyrics which counterbalances the soulful “POP” vocals from Ally Gradon, Charlie Gradon and Dean McLeod who sometimes all challenge for the position of lead vocalist. It’s quite a breathtaking and refreshing style of vocals to hear with the sludgy and stoner based grooves that remains true to Turtle Skull’s Neo Psychedelic creative vision.

With echoes of distorted amplifiers, sound loops and fuzzy reverb capturing a twisted style of Sixties and Seventies Psych Rock which never loses its sweet natured sounds, themes and uplifting identity despite the seedy and gritty underbelly that develops within the longer instrumental passages on the album. 

One of the main strengths of Being Here is Turtle Skull’s fearless attitude of experimenting with distorted areas of Fuzz, Doom, Prog, Psych, Stoner and Sludge based dynamics. This is quite a subversive record with Turtle Skull being quite philosophical on tracks such as Into The Sun, Bourgeoisie, It Starts With Me, Heavy As Hell and Moon & Tide.

There’s something for everyone to enjoy on Being Here with it’s delicious, addictive and highly aggressive energy which resonates a very HIP and COOL environment especially with the stripped back production values and recording techniques used for the entire album.

Turtle Skull have once again released an album that can easily be described as RETRO, OLD SCHOOL and brilliantly modern at the same time. With a bold, jagged and direct experimental sound that fully delivers within the riffs, thrills, spills and grooves department. If you dig your Heavy Psychedelic music with extra SPICE and AGGRESSION well Turtle Skull would like to have a word with you. 

Being Here is a masterclass of Heavy Psych based Doom/Stoner Rock that feels like a record for the ages….

Doom/Stoner Rockers Earl Of Hell live upto their name on their self-titled debut album with the band having a PURE RAWK & ROLL EXCESSIVE style of music that pays homage to bands such as Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains QOTSA and KYUSS. Though, Earl Of Hell adds a seedy level of Punk Rock, Speed Metal, Glam Rock and Thrash into their overall sound. Everything is played at a serious level with Earl Of Hell shredding their way through a ton of classic sounding grooves with the album being quite aggressive and supremely catchy. This feels like a totally different band compared to their 2022 EP - Get Smoked. 

Earl Of Hell feels more confident and has a more muscular sound which builds into a classic Heavy Metal style with a fast-paced Grunge atmosphere being played on the excellent batch of opening tracks with Satan Is Real, The Infernal Dream and Impaler. The lead vocals from Eric Brock are deeply rooted in Punk Rock and Heavy Metal lore with a frenzied Doom/Stoner Metal sound developing from the other members of the band with Lewis Inglis (Guitar), Dan Mitchell (Guitar), Dean Gordon (Bass) and Ryan Wilson (Drums) which they all play superbly throughout.

There’s a sense of 1980’s and 1990’s nostalgia that develops within the creative surroundings of the record with Earl Of Hell never losing sight of the gritty edge their debut album fully delivers on other tracks such as Brave New Age, Calling Is The Crow, My Twisted Mind and Bloodlines. The second half of the record is where we see Earl Of Hell develop a more DOOM & GLOOM sound with twinges of Progressive grooves appearing and this is perhaps the best part of the record. Earl Of Hell are on PURE DYNAMITE form with the excellent vocals of Eric Brock being one of the main highlights of the record. Lewis Inglis provides backup vocals along the way and he has a similar style to Eric and they compliment each other superbly well. 

The album was mixed and mastered by the legendary Alain Johannes and it sounds EPIC from start to finish that allows EARL OF HELL to cement their status as one of the best upcoming Doom/Stoner Rock bands within the UK underground scene right now. This is a huge sounding record and plays out like a greatest hits collection that demands your full and undivided attention.

Neo-Psych/Doom Rockers TURTLE SKULL Announce New Album Being Here. New Single Into The Sun Streaming.

With Being Here, Turtle Skull have evolved. A new lineup. A fresh approach. A leap forward. While the album builds on the sonic foundations of 2020’s Monoliths, it’s a different beast. Still hefty and considered but more immediate. Made for the moment. A record that values gut instinct over perfection.

Tracked live at NoWave in Mullumbimby, with a paired-back approach to studio tweaking, Being Here captures that ‘lightning in a bottle’ energy that happens when a band fully locks in. New member Ally Gradon’s synths inject fresh energy, swirling around meaty riffs and driving rhythms. It’s expansive yet raw, drawing from the likes of Black Moth Super Rainbow, Idles and Cause Sui with a nod to the cinematic sprawl of Spiritualized and The Flaming Lips. A heavy, heady blend of melody and atmosphere.

The new single from the release, Into the Sun, exemplifies this new ethos, centering poignant musings amid a shimmering wash of synth and surging guitar.

"Into the Sun was a collection of riffs I had from years ago that Ally had always favoured", tells drummer Charlie Gradon. "We brought it to the group and it quickly fleshed itself out. The lyrics came after a particularly rowdy yet fulfilling wedding that some of us went to. It’s about being stuck and needing to be with your people. The day to day mundane vs the hyper connected and profound, and how both are equally important.

"Being Here was much more about good songs that we had freshly written being captured live in the moment" says Gradon. "No click, no excessive layering, no studio trickery. The only thing that wasn’t captured live was the vocals. Choosing to self-produce and mix the album gave us the chance to preserve our initial vision, even if it nearly did kill me."

The album puts a spotlight on songwriting, covering weighty subject matter, from the life-force drain of social media to the relentless march of time. But it does so with a call to stay connected, empathetic and grounded. In this way, Being Here isn’t just an album title. It’s a philosophy. A mantra. A demand to be fully present, to embrace the chaos, the beauty, the weight of it all.

No strangers to sold-out headline shows across Sydney and Melbourne, Turtle Skull have a reputation for epic live performances. They’ve graced festival stages at Camp A Low Hum (NZ), The Gumball (NSW), Vivid (NSW) and Ninchfest (VIC) and supported the likes of Frankie and the Witch Fingers (USA), Earthless (USA) and Stonefield.

With Being Here set for release, the band is gearing up for another wave of touring, kicking off with a 7 March show at the Bergy Bandroom in Melbourne as part of the Brunswick Music Festival ahead of rumoured festival appearances later in the year. Since 2017, Parisian post-metal quartet HOMECOMING experiment as much as they navigate between different styles, drawing inspiration from sludge, grunge, 90s alt-rock and progressive metal. The key to the success of this unlikely fusion? Unfailing coherence, underpinned by a miracle recipe: blistering riffs, melodious or ultra-violent vocals, out-of-control drums, and a whole arsenal of better-than-average ideas that help to create an outstanding soundscape.

HOMECOMING's ambitious debut album, aptly titled "LP01", was released in December 2019 on a self-production basis. Spotted by tour promoter Hello Euphoria, the quartet crossed the French borders, hitting the roads of Europe until arriving on the stages of leading heavy music festival Desertfest London (in May 2023). Shortly after, they sign to UK label Copper Feast Records for the release of their second studio effort, 'Those We Knew' on April 19th 2024. The whole thing is off to a flying start.

Review

Those We Knew is the sophomore album from Grunge/Post-Metal/Prog Metallers Homecoming who bring a dirge-ridden 90’s Alt-Rock sound to their album. Mixing different themes, genres and sounds can be quite complicated at times but Homecoming seem to have found a winning formula that keeps their music grounded in reality even with a few ventures into Spaced Out and Psychedelic textures. 

Using the creative template similar to bands such as Alice In Chains, TOOL, Mastodon and Cult Of Luna, this record never feels like a copycat record but a band striving for their own identity and sound which they succeed at every turn within this great album.

The record can be harsh and unforgiving but also offers moments of blissful Post-Rock melodies which you can feel through the constant punishing beats of the excellent opening track of Tell Me Something. The grungy atmospherics soon changes into a more volatile and heavier Progressive movement with outbursts of aggressive Sludge beats before a chugging Thrash Metal drum line appears which allows the vocals from Théo to be quite aggressive and direct with superb backup vocals provided by Renaud.

Second Song Red Rose opens with a Mastodon-esque inspired riff melody that soon changes melody and direction for a powerful 90’s Alt Metal/Grunge aesthetic with the fast-paced instrumental sounds being deft and superbly progressive. The song is quite contemporary and solitary within the mellow confinements of the sullen creative attitude which Homecoming employs on this track alone. The “Post-Whatever'' dynamic is perhaps the most dominant theme on this song but there’s some exquisite heart-warming vocals which soon changes to the more violent sludgy atmospherics that Homecoming uses more and more on the remainder of the album.

Third song Blood Of My Mind opens with a more heartfelt instrumental and acoustic guitar which perhaps draws upon the Gloom & Doom world with a lush Psychedelic sound that has a classic 2000’s Alt-Metal attitude which becomes quite modern when Homecoming adding a thuggish Progressive melody and spiky Stoner Metal jams. The vocals are quite warm-hearted despite the aggressive nature of the track. The later parts become quite Post-Rock orientated with some flashy Jazzy sounds before ending with a thrilling Post-Metal battle with some of the heaviest and frenzied grooves on the whole album.

The second half of the album sees Homecoming a bit more experimental and dynamic with their music with more reliance on Ambient rhythms and Post-Rock soundscapes fully immersing with the Grunge, Doom, Sludge and Post-Metal environments they played within the first half of the album. 

Standout tracks to check out are Interlude II and the sublime final track Gift Of Eyes. Homecoming find more creative strength with the complex melodies they have composed for these tracks alone and deliver a truly satisfying listening experience. The record has a non-stop supply of first rate Progressive grooves which should allow Homecoming to become more known within the underground Metal community.

Those We Know has wonderfully observed production values that shows the many different musical sides to Homecoming they play throughout this album. Homecoming are quite a brilliant and technically minded band where this record allows them to prove this time and time again which is mainly down to the multitude of different musical styles they deliver on this record alone.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

You Are Weightless is the new album from Aussie Psych Stoner Rockers FOOT and sees the acclaimed band return with a more powerful sound that can be quite mellow in places. However, FOOT do return with a heavier attitude as well. The album moves from the different elements of Stoner Rock with more focus given to areas of Desert Rock and Space Rock grooves.

Opening song Bitter shows what FOOT do best by playing addictive 90's soulful Desert/Stoner Rock with areas of Psyched Out Blues Rock when the cool organs or synths appear. Quite bouncy in places with a lush desert rock vibe that has twinges of early-era Brant Bjork and possibly Yawning Man. Though with a faster Stoner based approach. The guitars are plentiful and forceful towards the end of the song that allows FOOT to start of the album on a high.

Second song Caged Animal is a more catchier and aggressive affair with slightly distorted guitars before descending into Post-Rock theatrics. The vocals have a sense of warmth feeling behind them. The song is slow-paced at first with FOOT laying down the Psychedelic levels of noisy atmospherics before moving into a more grungier area of music. The song has some excellent lyrics within the chorus that works well with the sprawling Psych/Post-Rock grooves that allow FOOT to have a subtle MELLOW and AGGRESSIVE feel to the song. 

Third song Fire Dance is a more action packed Stoner Metal song with a DOOM based attitude with it's early showing of progressive sounding guitars. Maybe not as warmly addictive as the opening two songs, FOOT still play a winning style of modern Psych Rock with catchy vocals to match. A fantastic sounding Spaced Out background allows this to be one of my favourite songs on the album. FOOT bring the "FUZZ" to this song and everything sounds more cinematic and fully complete towards the later stages of the track.

Fourth song Gold Lion is a more caustic Blues Rock approach with some of the best vocals on the album that is helped along by powerful lyrics. With classic grungy guitars allowing FOOT to employ some Psychedelic Freakouts on the heavier guitar sounds. 

FOOT continue to impress on the final three songs on the album with I'll Be Just Fine, Impossible and Scared. More Psych Rock and Spaced Out Stoner grooves allows FOOT to play to their strengths and allow You Are Weightless to be their best work to date. The vocal melodies delivered on I'll Just Be Fine and Impossible are sublime with FOOT playing top-notch Stoner Riffs that evoke memories of Alice In Chains, KYUSS and YAWNING MAN but with with a flashier style of Psych Rock attitude contained on the album.

You Are Weightless is without doubt FOOT's best release to date that allows them the opportunity to bring a fresh perspective to their overall sound. Perhaps one of the most mature offerings we've heard from the band. This is another wicked slice of Stoner Rock that elevates FOOT to the Top Tier of the Aussie Psych Stoner Rock Scene.
