Review

Fleshy Waves of Probability is the new album from Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metallers Calyces who bring a different flair from the Greek underground scene. With influences ranging from Mastodon, GOJIRA, Baroness, Between The Buried And Me and Boss Keloid, this is quite a mind-expanding and forward thinking album. However, Calyces fuse intricate melodies and fast-paced Thrash beat-downs with lush sounding Psychedelic grooves against a backdrop of chaotic time signatures and complex progressive beats.

The record does have a commercial Hard Rock/Metal aspect which has served Mastodon and Baroness well recently but Calyces never fully moves over to “THE DARK SIDE” with an album that delights and entertains with it’s fresh paced and vivid style of music played throughout. The opening track of Swirling Towards The Light has a fresh perspective with the melodic and highly charged Sludge Metal sounds being played at a heavier demented “DOOM-POP” level. There’s a sense of BOSS KELOID influenced wordplay appearing within the lyrics and the vocals at times with Calyces marching to their own creative beats.

Calyces just blast their way through a ton of experimental instrumental passages on tracks such as Boneshatter, Wastelands and Lost In Phrase which feels like the world of Prog Metal being re-imagined in the band’s DOOM infused SONIC imagery. The grooves are eclectic once again with Calyces not sticking to any genre of music and creating their own great style as they go along.

You’ll discover new sounds and hear passages you’ve heard before but that’s the best of both worlds which Fleshy Waves Of Probability will thrust you into. There’s a subtle Post-Rock/Post-Metal charge appearing within the record on the quieter moments which soon give way to the wicked sounding stop/start riffs which gives Calyces a pure experimental sound throughout the whole album.

The second half of Fleshy Waves Of Probability is just as relentless as the first half with Calyces perhaps more comfortable and evidently grounded by their bombastic sound offering the heaviest sounds on the whole record on tracks such as Voices In The Gray, Forked Tongue and Lethargy.

With excellent and emotionally charged production values felt from the very start of the album, Calyces have delivered the goods with the album which should allow them to gain more noticeable attention within the underground Sludge/Stoner Metal scene and perhaps even further if luck is on their side.

Fleshy Waves Of Probability is an absolute marvel with highly original moments that shines a new light within the Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metal scene.

Introduce Yourselves: The Raging Project

What is the name of your band?

The Raging Project is not a real band, it’s more like a studio project, a musical collaboration with talented guest musicians and vocalists

What is the genre of music that you play?

We play progressive metal, with rock, heavy, atmospheric and electro effects in the music.

Can you give a brief history of the band of how it came together and where it is today?

The Raging Project rises from Project Rage, born in 2007 in East of France formed by guitar player Lionel Fevre and myself, an electro-metal duet, joined by female vocalist Jeannick Valleur. In 2009, we had released a 5-track EP well welcomed in the European underground press and audience at that time. The project would have turned to a real band but after several gigs, this attempt failed and music had been at rest during all these years. In 2021, I decided to record all the songs with some talented guest musicians and singers.

What can people expect from your music?

I think they can find great moments of emotions, vintage heavy prog sound melted with modern power metal, surrounded by lots of calm and melodic moods.

What is the best release that folks should check out from your band?

The whole “Future Days” album must be discovered because it contains twelve songs with twelve different moods and purposes. Every song deserves to be heard.

Where can people find you on Social Media?

They can find us on Bandcamp, YouTube, Facebook. Write The Raging Project in all these medias and you will find extracts of songs, the entire album to order or download and videos with some musicians playing and singing.

Progressive sludge outfit Lord Dying release new animated video 'The Endless Road Home'

Credit: Neil DaCosta

Portland progressive sludge masters Lord Dying have unveiled their haunting new animated video for 'The Endless Road Home'. It's the closing track of their long-awaited new full-length, Clandestine Transcendence, which is released 19th January 2024 via MNRK Heavy.

Watch the video to 'The Endless Road Home' here: https://youtu.be/Yuw4F8hRyCc

Pre-order Clandestine Transcendence here: https://lorddying.ffm.to/clandestinetranscendence

Frontman Erik Olson comments on the latest single: "'The Endless Road Home' is dedicated to all the road dogs, travellers, bands, crew, people that make tours happen, people that go to shows and general rabble rousers. We salute you.”

Lord Dying transform tragedy into triumph. From the earliest rumblings of their first demo and self-titled EP (both issued in 2011), through the piledriving force of Summon The Faithless (2013) and crushing despair of Poisoned Altars (2015), the band have conjured masterfully melancholic heavy music for the misanthropic, with grit and grime.

In 2019, they delivered Mysterium Tremendum, a record Kerrang! declared a “prog-metal masterpiece.” The heady and adventurous existential meditation on death kicked off a trilogy and that story continues in 2023 with an increasingly ambitious follow-up, the aptly named Clandestine Transcendence.

Lord Dying cofounders Erik Olson (guitar, vocals) and Chris Evans (guitar) are joined by Alyssa Mocere (former bassist for Eight Bells), and Kevin Swartz (current drummer of Tithe). Chicago Reader crowned Mysterium Tremendum, “a beautiful meditation on tragedy.” Produced by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou (High On Fire, Code Orange, Kvelertak) at his God City Studios, Clandestine Transcendence steps even further into the great unknown, filled with riffs and vibes.

Mysterium Tremendum (Latin for “awe-inspiring mystery” or “terrible mystery,” depending on one’s view of existence) began a narrative centered on a central character the band calls The Dreamer, a conceptual theme that drove expansive, sometimes monstrous, and even plaintive and vulnerable music. Olson describes The Dreamer as an immortal being who wants to die. On Clandestine Transcendence, he gets that wish.

Woven throughout the songs, that story and its rich thematic material inform an immersive listen. Tension, drama, and atmosphere abound all over songs like 'The Universe Is Weeping' and 'Unto Becoming.' The massive scope and melodic vocals found on album three expand further on Clandestine Transcendence. Sharpened songwriting, emphasising hooks, helps push both extremes of the band beyond prior limits. Simply put, the softer side is even dreamier; the heavy side is twice as brutal.

Lord Dying are:

Erik Olson – vocals/guitar
Chris Evans – guitar
Alyssa Maucere – bass/vocals
Kevin Swartz – drums

Review

Tower Of The Severed Serpent is the new album from Danish Doom/Sludge Metallers Dread Witch and like their name suggests, the band bring a sense of bleak heaviness to this album but also being quite inventive wit their progressive and trippy psychedelic sounds they bring to the album. The PR Sheet that accompanied this release stated this album would appeal to fans of CONAN, Triptykon and Devin Townsend. That is perhaps the best way to describe Dread Witch down to a fine art.

As this album matches the bleak monolithic Doom/Sludge grooves that CONAN are known for whilst bringing a warped Progressive creative spirit into the album that have a Devin Townsend edge to them. Tower Of The Severed Spirit is quite riff-centric which you can hear on the stunning opening track The Tower which fuses down-tuned Sludgy guitars and gloomy Doom sounds for a slight WEEDIAN and FUZZY based song. The vocals from Mikael are aggressive, harsh and bleak but they're very easy to understand. So you can hear all the bleak thoughts the band have written for this track. The song is quite intense with Dread Witch playing a wicked style of Psych Doom with flashes of a Post-Sludge environment that grows bitterly cold towards the end of the song.

Second song Serpent God continues with the slightly experimental Sludge/Doom Metal sound with a menacing backline showing brief glimpses of a more extreme style of music waiting to appear. The music is down-tuned yet again but with a fresher sound that Dread Witch impresses even further when blending Psychedelic soundscapes that have a warped cinematic feel. There's a cool sideline of Thrash Metal appearing within this track and when the band start using distorted soundclips then Dread Witch brings a more OCCULT based presence to this track. This is a creepy and unsettling track which allows Dread Witch to show a more sinister and sadistic side to the band. This is one of the most challenging and perhaps most interesting tracks to listen to from a creative point of view.

Third song Leech has an entirely different feel at the start with Dread Witch employing a Post-Doom or Post-Rock environment before moving back to their primal Doom/Sludge Metal sound. The song still remains vastly different to the opening two tracks with Mikael's vocals having a bleak sense of despair to them. The music is more chaotic and offers a more modern based Psych Doom Metal vibe with an Ambient style of music allowing the band to become a band that thrives upon taking bold creative risks. This is where perhaps the Devin Townsend influence strongly comes into play as the song is a wicked collection of different sounds, themes and harsh environments.

The second half of the album carries on the twisted experimental vibe of the first half with Dread Witch excelling even further with highly volatile down-tuned Sludge grooves with a despairing and seedy FUZZY presence on tracks such as Wormtongue and Into The Crypt. The album perhaps becomes more Death Metal based with the vocals and riffs starting to drift further into the more extreme side of metal but still offering the Sludge/Doom Metal purists plenty of great moments to lose themselves in.

The major surprise of the album has to be on the final track Severed which is a superbly played and wholly intimate Instrumental song where Dread Witch play moments of Ambient Metal, Psych Rock, Sludge Metal and Doom Metal with a less chaotic presence. The song is worthy of closing the album with Dread Witch playing some of the album's most interesting sounds on this track alone.

Tower Of The Severed Serpent oozes creative style from start to finish with Dread Witch playing a multitude of different sounds within the Doom/Sludge Metal realm.

Dread Witch are an exciting band from the Doom/Sludge Metal underground scene and you can expect to hear top-level experimental sounds on this album. The album also benefits from excellent production values that allows Dread Witch to have more depth to their overall sound which also helps this album to be a refreshing change of pace from other Doom/Sludge Metal albums currently being released.

Review

Sleep In Light is the new album from UK Post-Metallers Hundred Year Old Man (HYOM). Drifting further into the Post-Black Metal Abyss compared to their debut album Breaching. The album allows HYOM to take influences and cues from such luminaries as Cult Of Luna, Neurosis and ISIS with the band bringing a more Progressive and Sci-Fi focus to the storytelling with this album.

A ferocious onslaught of Pitch-Black Progressive Sounds allows HYOM to bring a more violent approach to their own style of Drone based Doom/Post-Metal. The haunting Ambient Soundscapes are used wisely on opening song A New Terror with the heavy Post-Black Metal atmospherics still maintaining a world-weary presence. The vocals move from Death based growls to a more Hardcore style vocal delivery but it’s the music that is the real standout here. Moving from ethereal based Post-Metal to the more threatening Drone/Blackened Sludgy sounds. The final part of the song is just pure CINEMATIC ECSTASY with the sludgy guitars having a volatile DRONE METAL sound that ranks as some of HYOM’s finest work to date.

Second song Sleep In Light continues with the mellow and heavy sonic journey from the previous track but with a more distorted and carefree sound. This reminds myself of early era ISIS in many ways. Sure, the vocals are heavier and music perhaps gloomier but the whole musical imagery has the creative essence of that legendary band but HYOM still create their own definitive sound on this track. The song moves between the cracks of Doom Metal and Sludge Metal with HYOM playing different strands of heavy distorted sounds that leave little to the imagination. The vocals yet again add a powerful and menacing touch to proceedings with the gut wrenching lyrics doing their job brilliantly well.

Other standout songs include: I Caught A Glimpse Of Myself On Fire, Honne, Stone Sail and Livyatan

As these songs prove why HYOM are perhaps the finest Post-Metal band the UK scene has to offer. The way the band fuses the quieter Ambient Post-Rock parts within the heavier and emotionally charged Sludge/Post-Metal sounds is nothing short of groundbreaking. The instrumental work is first rate with each member putting in amazing performances across the board.

The album may have some folks complaining about the excessive length of it all. As the album runs near the seventy nine minutes mark. However, HYOM go all out on this release and they succeed in playing some of the heaviest and finest Post-Metal grooves you’re likely to hear all year.

Sleep In Light is a daring work of art from Hundred Year Old Man and is perhaps one of the defining Post-Metal albums of this year or any other year for that matter.

Review

Blood Of The Old Gods is the new album from Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metallers Restless Spirit and is inspired by the teachings of Baroness and Mastodon with the band channelling that style of music the bands are known for. However, this is a more spacier effort with Restless Spirit channelling other classic timelines of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. This remains a wonderfully progressive album with Restless Spirit bringing their own spin on the Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metal genre.

The first song The Betrayer is a semi acoustic/ambient style instrumental Post-Doom offering that brings a sense of realism to the album before the heavy grooves fully kick in. Lasting under two minutes, this song is still an excellent solo piece that is an essential part of the album.

Second song Judgement And Exile is where the album really moves up a gear with a non-stop style of melodic Psychedelic and Progressive blend of Sludge/Stoner Metal with the song appealling to fans of FORMING THE VOID and Pallbearer with a twinge of Crowbar style sludgy riffage. The vocals are frantic but a winning style for the creative vision that Restless Spirit conjure up with this release. The slower Post-Doom/Post-Stoner moments with soaring vocals are the best part of this song and perhaps the album. As Restless Spirit fully bring a true cinematic vision within the songs epic eight minute plus runtime.

This is a concept album which you can read about below:

Blood of the Old Gods is a concept album focused around the idea of going against the status quo and defying a society built around gratification through excess manipulation and deception. The realization that your heroes, your friends, your family can sometimes be the worst perpetrators of the things you despise. It tells the struggle of simply doing what you feel is right and while we are told that this is an easy task, it simply is not always true. This world is due for a change, as destructive as the path forward may be."

The album runs for thirty nine minutes but Restless Spirit cover a lot of ground due to the heavy subject matter but this is still quite a fun ride that offers plenty moments of HUGE SOUNDING upbeat moments. Restless Spirit have written a a great concept album that focuses on music, story and lyrical content in equal measure. Taking a “Mastodon” methodical approach with their story but never forgetting about the music and giving the listener a batch of fantastic songs to listen to even if they’re not fully sold with the albums story.

Blood Of The Old Gods is a masterclass of Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metal with all of the songs being equally as good as each other. The dynamic between this power-trio is simply superb when they let fly with their Psychedelic and Spaced Out grooves before bringing a thunderous Sludgy based Doom/Stoner Metal riff out of nowhere. There are riffs aplenty when lodged between ambient soundscapes so if you’re a riff-hound looking for your next fix then look no further with this record.

Other great tracks to check out are: Crooked Timber Of Humanity, Cascade Immolater and the epic final two songs of Blood Of The Old Gods and Haunted offering of almost 16 minutes of progressive and punishing based vibes which showcase the true creative power of Restless Spirit.

First rate production values can be heard throught this album and allows Restless Spirit to release  one of the best albums of the year even at this late stage. Prepare yourself for a first-rate musical adventure where the “THE RIFF IS KING”.....

Review

II. Eternal Meditations of a Deathless Crown is the 2nd full length album from Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metallers Bones Of The Earth. Coming two years after their excellent debut, this release sees the band return with a more aggressive tone and even wilder ideas held within the lyrics and striking album artwork.

The band continue their “Hardcore” quest fusing Sludge/Stoner Metal grooves against a Progressive backdrop with influences diverse as EyeHateGod and Mastodon with the Hardcore Punk/Metal doing a fine job of holding everything together.

The album runs for under 35 minutes and this is a great running time for Bones Of The Earth to give your entire body a full “Sludge/Stoner Metal” workout. The first track Decline is a solid instrumental offering which moves at it’s own steady pace but it shows small signs of the aggression that awaits on the album.

Second song – Machine Rising – is where the album really comes alive with the hardcore vocals from Raif and Cody leading the way. They’re pissed off and remain firmly in the “growling” department but at least they’re easy to understand. The music has a slight early-Mastodon feel and Bones Of The Earth soon take hold of their own musical journey with epic “stop-start” progressive moments allowing a more Psychedelic flair to slowly creep in. There are some fantastic technical guitar solos towards the end of this song and this shows you how talented these guys really are.

Third song – Peaceseeker – keeps up the aggressive and volatile mood with a song that’s one of the darkest on the album and that’s down to the superb vocals and dark lyrics contained within this song. The “sonic” based riffs is another good thing that soon drifts into Psychedelic and Modern Hard Rock. This shouldn’t really work but Bones Of The Earth pull this off with great effect for one of the standout songs on the record.

The second half of the album continues with the Progressive Sludge momentum with flashes of Stoner Metal aggression allowing Bones Of The Earth bringing a more “Apocalyptic” vision to their music. The “Hardcore” vibe is perhaps the standout part of this album. As you know everything is going to be LOUD and HEAVY without a care in the world.

The final two songs – The Empire Never Ended and Reclamation – is where Bones Of The Earth earn their Sludge/Stoner Metal stripes with almost 16 minutes of finely played Post-Metallic and Progressive grooves with the band finding the time to try different styles of music on the final parts of the album.

The overall sound of the album is excellent. It’s not too polished with the album retaining a more “LIVE ATMOSPHERE” feel to it all.

II. Eternal Meditations of a Deathless Crown is a superbly entertaining and well-made record and should hopefully allow Bones Of The Earth to gain greater exposure within the Sludge/Stoner Metal scene.

Review

South American Doom/Stoner Metal Duo – Elphantus – debut self-titled EP is a release that blends Brazilian and Oriental cultures with the powerful melodies of Doom/Stoner Metal for a heavy and far-out style of music with the band focusing upon building Progressive Cinematic Grooves to their overall sound. The EP may take a couple listens to become used to. As Elphantus music is quite fast-paced and includes a lot of different sounds that you wouldn’t expect for a Doom/Stoner Metal release.

The EP lasts 25 minutes and the band offer 4 tracks that are quite intense and very raw from the start with the opening song A Espinha Dorsal da Noite being the standout song on the EP. Elphantus explore many different themes on this song and perhaps show their wildest ideas on this track. The heavy psychedelic guitars have a raw violent energy to them with the drumming having a more progressive flair.

Second song - No Rastro da Serpente – has a more unsettling approach especially with the vocals and the overall sound of the EP. It’s raw and lacking in finesse but there is something addictive to Elphantus approach to this song that you wouldn’t expect. The Doom/Stoner Metal riffs are superbly played but the lo-fi production makes it harder to hear things at first. Though, multiple listens will allow the listener to become more accustomed to this style of music.

The final two songs - O Chamado da Floresta and ElefantĂase Pineal – show Elephantus playing a more threatening style of music that becomes more Doom and Thrash based in places with ElefantĂase Pineal being the other standout song on the EP.

Elphantus definitely show a lot of promise on this EP. I’m hoping their next release will be bolstered by better production as well. Elephantus aren’t the finished article yet but the signs are promising that the band will release something special in the near future.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
