Review

Subheriba is the debut album Psych/Doom/Stoner Metallers Greenhead and they play a style of music they call “Stonecore” as they include elements of Punk, Sludge and Hardcore into their highly trippy blend of WEEDIAN METAL. Greenhead are quite bold by starting their album with the epic title track running for over twenty minutes in length. This is a creative choice that pays off big time as Greenhead play an astonishing array of trippy grooves and intense melodies that allows Nick Groves (Guitar/Vocals), Ian Andrew (Drums/Vocals) and Alex Dixon (Bass/Vocals) to fully show off their superb musical talents throughout.

Greenhead demonstrates areas of Thrash, Speed and Post-Metal in their music which appears within the first half of the standout title track. The track shows how Greenherd tackle Prog rock passages and Ambient Rock surroundings which is helped along by elements of expressive free-form Jam Rock for the most part. Though expect touches of bands such as CAVE IN, PRIMUS, The Melvis, Mastodon and Mutoid Man to appear within this wicked style of WARPED STONER based madness.

Greenhead focus on playing more riff-centric fare for the remaining tracks on the album but still keeping with their out of control “CREATIVE” outlook on tracks such as Indigo, All Seeing Eye, Nature’s Pyramid and Purple God. The highly volatile style and utmost reliance of Experimental Stoner Metal sounds might be too jarring for some but it does allow Greenhead to have an unsettling quality and unpredictable edge to their music.

However, the album is never boring and brilliantly thrives on its highly unpredictable and unforgiving nature which sees the band have quite a SCHIZOPHRENIC identity at times which is one of the best parts of the record as you never know what to expect next.

Subherbia isn’t going to be for everyone but if you’re on the lookout for a band with a unique voice who aren’t afraid to take HUGE creative risks with their music then Greenhead are the band for you. There’s a ton of great instrumental solos which fully embraces the “PARANOID” style of Stoner Metal which should delight fans of Philip K. Dick as well. I know that’s a bold statement to make but wait until you hear the whole album in full and make your own conclusions.

My own verdict is that Subherbia is not perfect by any means but it’s the Psychedelic and Warped journey the record takes you upon where you’re treated to a wholly original style of Stoner Metal to pulverize your senses with.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

...And His Skull Shall Make My Bong is the debut full length album from Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers Vape Warlök and it’s a record that feels it was created in the  BOWELS OF HELL or perhaps made by the deadliest strain of WEED imaginable. The record is inspired by the likes of Electric Wizard, Sleep, BONGZILLA and Sons Of Otis.

The band is made up of members from acts such as UNIDA, Circle Of Sighs and High Priestess with their take on some epic ELECTRIC WIZARD inspired SATANIC FUZZED UP grooves which has an ugly atmosphere emitting from the speakers. The vocals from The Count and The Duchess are bleak and constantly full of death based GROWLS but they’re quite easy to understand which is a good thing so you can get a sense of the bleak story contained within the whole album.

The Baron adds some wickedly OCCULT based samples which thrusts this record into the upper levels of DOOM METAL which can be quite trippy, surreal and wonderfully psychedelic with the trappings of a downright intense trip into the sinister side of WEEDIAN metal. The songs are quite progressive with them running from seven minutes to eleven minutes in length. Vape Warlök demonstrate a wide range of different musical styles with some classic melodies appearing which combine superbly well with the harsh Sludge/Stoner Metal surroundings especially on tracks such as: Satan’s Succubus, ...And His Skull Shall Make My Bong and Bongmaster General.

The record may have some humorous song titles but that’s where the humour ends and the pitch black melodic violence reigns supreme with Vape Warlök perfectly demonstrating a noisy and sometimes surreal style of music which generates into some pleasing moments of Classic Psychedelic Rock. The downtuned and distorted instrumental passages have echoes of Church Of Misery with the soundbytes that are superbly woven into the DNA and creative fabric of the album. The music is full of slow-down and stripped back melodies with Vape Warlök playing an aggressive and faster style of music when the mood calls for this.

...And His Skull Shall Make My Bong does have a slightly DIY based approach with the production values but this adds a level of supreme urgency to the album and gives it a stunning “LESS IS MORE” energy that allows the music to have a sheer level of intensity which can be quite deafening at times especially on tracks such as Satanalingus: The Devil's Tongue and Bongmaster General.

Vape Warlök is a band who know how to have a DEMONIC good time with the band even adding strands of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal into the mix through some wonderfully pitched moments of classic guitar shredding on different parts of the record.

...And His Skull Shall Make My Bong is being released on the ultimate WEEDIAN holiday on 4/20 and this is the best possible way to celebrate. As this record is “Brutal and brilliantly filthy and can only be described as Bongzilla meets THOU”. So if you like your STONER records on the heavier and sinister side of life then Vape Warlök have all bases covered for an album that will easily be considered one of the best albums of the year.

VAPE WARLÖK - Debut Album '...And His Skull Shall Make My Bong' Coming 4/20!

Hurling straight at you from their wholly tongue-impaled cheek comes ...And His Skull Shall Make My Bong, the debut full-length from Southern California's Vape Warlök.

If a bongwater-soaked battle vest covered in poorly-sewn-on Sleep patches and mildew became sentient and formed a band, it would be Vape Warlök. Comprising members of Unida, Circle of Sighs, and High Priestess, these denizens of the dour doom dumpster aspire to make music that is raw, primitive, and heavier than thou.

The upcoming album was written and recorded in 2023-2024 at Thee Culveric Catacombs (Culver City, CA), Suspirium Art Space (DTLA), and Downtown Rehearsal (DTLA). The trio shared an official video earlier this year for the album-opening track "Satan's Succubus."

Tracklist:

01. Satan's Succubus
02. ...And His Skull Shall Make My Bong
03. Meth Slave
04. Satanalingus: The Devil's Tongue
05. Bongmaster General

That first single alone thoroughly indicates that Vape Warlök slathers their knuckle-dragging stoner-doom in a thick husk of filthy slime that won't wash off no matter how hard you try. It's just plain gross, and that's how they like it.

...And His Skull Shall Make My Bong will be available in digital and physical format on April 20th, 2025, including limited edition vinyl via Pillars of Creation.

"Brutal and brilliant filthy. Bongzilla meets THOU." - Steve H., Outlaws Of The Sun

"Vape Warlök are superlatively heavy, and obviously the call not to take …And His Skull Shall Make My Bong too seriously is resonant from the skullbong blacklight poster artwork on through the murky psychedelia of the “Satan’s Succubus” video and the grueling chicanery that ensues from the opener onward. At the same time, Vape Warlök aren’t so easy to discount as being just-fuckery. That there would be an awareness of their place in the genre isn’t a surprise — they’re veteran players, just with fun nicknames." - The Obelisk

"Ridiculous, filthy, ignorant riffs... A lumbering drug march through molasses. Love it." - Darryl Shepard

HASHTRONAUT launched into orbit from their Denver-based Mission Control in the summer of 2020. Coalescing through a string of hazy jam sessions during the darkest days of the pandemic, the four-piece began playing live the minute they could, and it took only a few gigs to solidify their electrifying reputation in the Colorado heavy scene. With a distinct sonic identity that channels classic elements from Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy to mainstays of the modern canon like Windhand and Monolord — along with their collective love of vintage gear, walls of speakers and the sweetest leaf of all — HASHTRONAUT’s galactic tones, colossal riffs and driving rhythms have begun spreading to the farthest corners of the universe.

Keeping momentum high on the heels of a self-released EP and opening slots for icons like Pallbearer, Bongzilla and High on Fire, HASHTRONAUT released their debut LP "No Return" on New Mexico-based independent label Blues Funeral Recordings to great critical acclaim in the spring of 2024.

Review

Bronco is a Sludge/Stoner Metalloers formed from the ashes of the highly regarded band TOKE after guitarist Tim Bryan suffered a tragic motorcycle accident in 2021. Out of respect for his bandmate, vocalist and bass player Bronco along with drummer JP decided to continue with a newly formed trio. Joined by guitarist Vic, they picked Bronco's artist's alias for their name.

I was a huge fan of TOKE and I was deeply saddened by Tim Bryan’s passing and when I heard the news about Bronco then I became very excited to see what the guys had in store for us. I’m pleased to say Bronco have delivered a lean, mean and pissed off record that honours the creative groundwork laid down by TOKE whilst taking influence by the likes of WEEDEATER, BONGZILLA, EYEHATEGOD, SLEEP and ELECTRIC WIZARD. Though, with Bronco playing a moody Southern Metal influence which taps into the darker side of WEEDIAN life.

The record is powered by nihilistic LOW & SLOW sound which comes through the opening seconds of the sublime opening track Scourge Descent. The sound is ugly and downright nasty at times with the FUZZ element feeling like it’s going through withdrawal symptoms via experimentation with a nasty drug or banned substance which Bronco use to their advantage by creating filthy sludgy grooves.

The vocals from Bronco are bang on point with his delivery being harsh, violent and full of pissed off imagery with the superb lyrics written for the whole album. Bronco never shy away from shining a light on the seedier and uglier side of the Sludge/Stoner Metal scene with the album having quite an unpolished sound which allows the band to have a more “NO FUCKS GIVEN” attitude on how they deliver their music.

Bronco excel the most playing long drawn out instrumental grooves which brings many areas of distorted Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal into the mix on other tracks such as Ride Eternal, Light Of God, Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia, Legion and T.O.N.S. There are moments where Bronco switch things up a bit and leave the “LOW & SLOW” life behind to play a faster and more riff-centric style of music which adds a sense of fun to their music which is perhaps influenced by the likes of Church Of Misey and BONGZILLA.

Bronco also brings a sense of “storytelling” which only adds to their sense of realism and downbeat themes used throughout the album. However, despite the dark subject matter being portrayed, the record is brilliantly fun at times with Bronco bringing multiple and different styles of grooves, riffs and spliffs to the party.

Bronco’s debut album is a massive sounding record which should serve the band well by claiming a fearsome reputation within the underground scene. This is a record I can’t recommend highly enough. If you’re a fan of WEEDIAN METAL that’s not afraid to get down and dirty with brutal sounds from start to finish then BRONCO have all bases covered on that score.

My advice is to get fully on board with what BRONCO has to say as you’ll be rewarded with what will become one of the great and true definitive Sludge/Stoner Metal albums of 2025.

Review

No Return is the debut album from Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers Hashtronaut who explore similar Spaced Out territories to bands such as SLEEP, Bongzilla, Weedeater and Monolord. The record has its own distinctive WEEDIAN flavour for a debut album with Hashtronaut employing some very cool humour within their lyrics that are delivered by mixture of sublime different vocal styles.

The songs contained within No Return can be quite epic in scope within the more lengthier compositions on tracks such as Carcinogen, Dead Cloud and Dweller where Hashtronuat have more time and space to play about with. The Psychedelic and Spaced Out movements are continuously changing with the mood or melody of the album though there’s a classic FUZZ ROCK sound being heard within the production techniques throughout the album. Shades of BONGZILLA and SLEEP downtuned heaviness is matched against Monolord’s level of COSMIC DOOM with the album still allowing Hashtronaut to stand their own creative ground.

The album flows superbly well with each of the tracks leading into each other perfectly especially within the first few tracks of Rip Wizard, Cough It Up and Carcinogen being considered as one lengthy track broken down into individual chapters. The overall sound crackles with VINTAGE sludgy grooves and modern day Psychedelic Stoner Metal grittiness which sees Hashtronaut play a muscular style of music with that essential SABBATHIAN dynamic power also adding a filthy and seedy attitude to the more extended and progressive instrumental jams the album contains.

Truth be told, No Return has no right to be this great especially for a debut release. Hashtronaut have delivered perhaps the almost perfect WEEDIAN debut album of the year next to KALGON’s upcoming debut album. The whole story of the album is outlandish, superbly realised and all told through the power of music. With first rate production values allowing the album to have an incredible presence from start to finish.

Hashtronaut are perhaps at the start of a wholly new exciting chapter for themselves to explore within the global Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal scene. No Return is the type of album that could be considered a landmark release within the years to come and that’s the real beauty and power of this amazing record.

Deathrite Shaman - Deathrite (Album Review)

Release Date: March 04th 2024. Record Label: Self Released. Formats: DD

Deathrite - Tracklisting

1.Forgotten Ways 05:24

2.The Great Hunt 05:20

3.Dragonspeaker 07:13

4.Lord of Storms 06:38

5.Journey to the Deathrite 22:53

Review

Deathrite is the debut album from one-man Doom/Stoner Metal entity Deathrite Shaman. Taking a more raw sounding approach to the Drone/Doom sound preached by bands such as OM, Sunn 0))) and BONG, this album is quite heavy-going in places but with a style of Distorted grooves that will appeal to the LOW & SLOW crowd. Deathrite Shaman do give themselves enough room to breathe and play extended instrumental grooves with a WEEDIAN smoke heavy composure. The record has subtle moments of Psychedelic beats and other various instruments being added along the way.

Deathrite lasts for around forty eight minutes in length and I can see comparisons to SLEEP here especially within the lyrics written for the album which are delivered by clean vocals, harsh growls and shamanic chants within Forgotten Ways and The Great Hunt. The album is played at a slow-to-mid pace which is what you expect from a musical project inspired by the mighty OM. Though, there are moments where Deathrite Shaman opts for a faster style of music whilst keeping within their Meditative Doomed Out Stoner vision.

Deathrite Shaman incorporates a deep Fantasy lore within the album and maybe some parts of the album are quite FANTASTICAL but this all adds to the sheer scope and enjoyment of the album. The production values are very raw throughout and some parts maybe could have been done with more work to them. However, this is still quite an impressive album to listen to within the more FAR OUT there parts of the album.

The album becomes more interesting from the offset of the third track Dragonspeaker as the album's narrative becomes fully fleshed out with intriguing ideas and sublime Psychedelic noises adding to the whole DRONED OUT sound of the album.

The fourth track Lord Of Storms  takes a more twisted and distorted turn with the music being deliberately slow and DRONE/DOOM obsessed which allows the album to have an Eagle Twin influenced style of music starting to form.

The final track of Journey To The Deathrite runs for a mouthwatering twenty two minutes which sees the production values being more polished compared to the other tracks on the album. The grooves are quite DENSE with the volume levels having a heavier presence which allows the music to become more FUZZ and quite obsessive within the Down Tuned flow of how Deathrite SHaman delivers their music to the final end. Perhaps the standout track on the whole album.

Overall, Deathrite despite its rough production values, features a highly intriguing concept as its main story which allows Deathrite Shaman to play a great style of Drone/Doom/Stoner Metal and perhaps make themselves known further within the Doom/Stoner Metal underground scene.
