Review

Psych Doom/Stoner Metallers Witchthroat Serpent make a welcome return with their new album Trove of Oddities at the Devil's Driveway. Their first new album in almost five years and the band have added a new member to the line-up which allows for a more expansive and heavier sound compared to their previous albums.

Trove of Oddities at the Devil's Driveway has a darker DOOMED OUT and FUZZIER tone which allows the band to play grooves that are more AMPLIFIED in places that’s reminiscent of Electric Wizard and Black Sabbath with the band still doing their own creative thing. The album is perhaps more Psychedelic with the emphasis on Seventies Doom & Gloom atmospherics.

Opening song Multi-dimensional Marvelous Throne (M-DMT) is a trippy balance of Occult based madness with an LSD/WEEDIAN flavour heard within the excellent rhythm section. The guitars add a freakier and muscular groove for the lead vocals bringing a classic style of Doom Metal to the album. There’s guitar solos and riffs galore towards the middle of the song and that brings a Modern Day flow to the album. However, this album is all about that classic SABBATH inspired LOW & SLOW environment that brings an air of FUZZED OUT HEAVINESS. This is the longest track on the album and perhaps the most Progressive with Witchthroat Serpent playing long drawn out FUZZY notes with a menacing feel to them.

Second track Nosferatu’s Mystery carries on the Horror themes of the album with a song inspired by the legendary film. The vocals have a more “storytelling” vibe on this track with the music being firmly a Doomed Out Fuzz/Stoner affair. The music can be slow but it’s not without purpose. Witchthroat Serpent are starting to come of age on this track with the sublime music and lyrics they’ve created. The song offers a delicate balance of LOW & SLOW and AMPLIFIER DISTORTION movements against the classic style of Occult Doom/Stoner Metal. The later stages of the song become slightly creepier with the lyrics and use of different styles of gloomy atmospherics injected into the more Psychedelic aspects of the track.

Third track The Gorgon is a more Ambient/Psychedelic driven song with the band using gloomy soundscapes and distorted themes as its main sound. The song does have a more Droned Out feeling which is a good style of music to deliver here. One of the most experimental songs I’ve heard the band attempted to date but the ending of the song does feature some good old fashioned Classic Horror sounds starting to emerge and then vanish quickly into the night.

Fourth song The House That Dripped In Blood is classic Witchthroat Serpent through and through. Slow paced gloomy sounds that become wholly atmospheric and expand into melodic strands of Doom/Stoner Metal with a twisted nightmarish vibe. The song also sees the band blend more Horror imagery into the music and the lyrics that are delivered with twisted relish by the excellent vocals yet again. Perhaps the song is too “slow-moving” for its own good but when the music is wonderfully BOLD as this then I can live with that. This is another standout track from the band and the most interesting song on the album from a creative point of view.

Yellow Nacre sees the band play a classical style of Doom Metal with a FUZZED OUT METAL backdrop that perhaps contains the standard style of Doom Metal grooves. There’s not much LOW & SLOW experimentation here. As WItchthroat Serpent offer long-time fans of the band a welcome return to their earlier sounds but with some small traces of Psychedelic Distortion along the way.

The final song Mountain Temple In Bleakness is where Witchthroat Serpent at the height of their creative powers with a song that matches both the worlds of Classic Doom Metal and Modern Day Stoner Metal with the subtle sensibilities of the storyline of the album coming full circle here. The music is FUZZY as hell which would make Electric Wizard proud. The band do cover a lot of ground on this track but they wisely let the music do the talking with some of the best guitar solos and dirtiest parts of the album appearing right here.

Trove of Oddities at the Devil's Driveway is a delicious and seedy musical adventure into the FUZZIER depths of Doom/Stoner Metal with Witchthroat Serpent on majestic form throughout the album. This album has also allowed for the band to find their own definitive sound to become one of the main movers within the Doom/Stoner Metal underground scene.

With one of the best underground record labels Heavy Psych Sounds backing Witchthroat Serpent all the way on this album. Trove of Oddities at the Devil's Driveway is the type of album that should be one of the most essential albums to own and listen to if you’re a serious follower of the Doom/Stoner Metal scene.

This is a first rate release from one of the best bands of the French Doom/Fuzz/Stoner Metal scene.

Introduce Yourselves: NADSAT And Details About Upcoming New Album TORNS TIMES

What is the name of your band?

Nadsat

What is the genre of music that you play?

We play heavy noise rock music, though we played a mix of instrumental noisecore/mathcore in our older releases.

Can you give a brief history of the band of how it came together and where it is today?

We have been playing together since 2010, but we came up with the idea of a noise duo in 2015. Since then we have released one EP (“Terminus Ep” in 2016) and two albums (“Crudo” in 2017 and “Feral” in 2019). We played all over Italy through the years, plus a short euro tour in 2018 and a Russian tour in 2019.

With our new album “Torn Times” we switched to a more hardcore approach in songwriting, with huge influence from 90’s american noise rock.

What can people expect from your music?

Nothing but heavy and fuzzy riffs, saturated vocals and short hardcore tunes.

What is the best release that folks should check out from your band?

Our new album “Torn Times” of course!

Where can people find you on Social Media?

Review

Sludge/Stoner Rockers Sandrider return with their new album Enveletration and sees the band returning to their roots with sounds reminiscent from their acclaimed debut album but matching them agains the Hardcore Punk movement heard over their last couple of records. There's a more outlandish Punk and Psychedelic spirit on this album that brings a more aggressive Progressive feel that sees the band playing similar styles of music to their underground peers such as KYLESA and TORCHE.

The music remains constantly catchy with modern sounding waves of Sludge Power Rock merged with a kick-ass metallic Stoner edge.

Opening song Alia is classic Sandrider through and through with the band merging Post-Stoner soundscapes against a subtle Hardcore backdrop with the faster Stoner sounds allowing Sandrider to play some of the riffiest grooves they've laid down since their debut album but still building new exciting sounds for themselves to fully explore and play with. The song is highly melodic with tons of catchy guitar reverb to provide a more unsettling muscular sound when the grooves become ever more present. The top-notch vocal delivery is superb as well.

Second song Enveletration is a catchy and fast-paced Hardcore Punk based number with Sandrider holding back the Sludge/Stoner Metal backdrop before exploding into a loud wall of Psychedelic based Noise Rock sounds. The track does almost veer into the heavier depths of Sludge/Stoner Metal with the bombastic vocals and AMPLIFIER WORSHIP riffs that all combine for an unsettling "Mexican Standoff" towards the end of the song. Very hard to describe but so easily to listen to and get emotionally involved with.

Third song Circles offers a more "DOOM-POP" style song that TORCHE were known for but still having that Snadrider sludgy Hardcore Punk Rock flavour. The vocals are superb with the dual use of vintage Stoner delivery and modern day melodic Doom Rock styles which the band use similar delivery with the instrumental work. The song is very socially aware with the lyrics and it's good to see Sandrider playing to their creative strengths on this song. I can detect a Sub-Pop Records vibe going on with this track going "Grunge" in certain places but this album essentially remains a Sludge/Stoner Rock album with many different sounds and influences being used to great effect.

Fourth song Tourniquet continues with the creative journey heard within the last song but with a more positive and aggressive approach. Some epic chainsaw NOISE ROCK guitars leading the way with a Sludgy and WEEDIAN backdrop being played at a spectacular pace. Throw in a KILLER singalong chorus and Sandrider feel  like they're at the height of their creative powers with this song. The subtle use of melodic Post-Stoner tones and aggressive Sludge Rock catches the imagination the most on this track with this becoming one of the standout tracks on the album.

Fifth song Weasel is where Sandrider becomes slightly leaner and meaner with their music with the band offering another wild ride of Sludge/Punk Rock with a sense of kick-ass ANARCHY being heard within this track. The music is superbly played and the lyrics may not be as refined but they get the job done of speaking to all corners of the underground Hardcore Punk and WEEDIAN underground scenes. The funky bass guitar and drums are excellent throughout that allows the vocals and guitars to have a more menacing presence to them.

We're five songs into this album and Sandrider has astounded me with the sheer amount of great grooves and riffs the band deliver on this album. And we have five more tracks to go. Sandrider continue their Hardcore Punk/Sludge/Stoner Metal journey with even more catchy Psych Rock and Noise Rock sounds joining along the way.

The album perhaps becomes more Psychedelic based but Enveletration still remains a groove-laden Sludge/Stoner Metal monster where Sandrider adapt a more confident "POWER TRIO" approach on tracks such as Slumber, Proteus, Priest and Grouper.

Enveletration is an album that's brimming with action packed, grooves and meaty riffs that allows Sandrider to create highly original sounds of their own. The album benefits from first rate production values that gives the band a more compelling sound compared to their previous albums with Enveletration becoming an essential album to listen to, fully explore and add to your own record collection.

Simply unmissable...

Review

Instrumental Psychedelic Doomsters L'IRA DEL BACCANO return with their new album of new material for the first time in six years with Cosmic Evoked Potentials. The band have taken on a broader Prog Rock sound compared to previous releases and perhaps become more focused on a trippy Psychedelic sound. L'IRA DEL BACCANO play a different multi-layered sound on this album that's helped along by Swirling Ambient Noises and Spaced Out Psychedelia.

If you can imagine members of RUSH, HAWKWIND and BLACK SABBATH joining forces then that's the best way to describe this album. The record is quite soulful and full of heavy progressive Doomed Out grooves which fully come into focus on the opening track The Strange Dream Of My Old Sun.

The song which is a ten minutes plus prog fuelled Doom/Stoner odyssey with L'IRA DEL BACCANO playing different levels of Psychedelic themes with a killer FUZZED OUT atmosphere. There's some cool areas of distortion being used on the track but it's the swirling Space Rock themes and Prog Rock attitude that allows L'IRA DEL BACCANO to be more melodic with their music. The creativity is impressive yet again as you think you've heard it all before with Instrumental Doom Metal but as with Clouds Taste Satanic, L'IRA DEL BACCANO find new exciting ways that brings a fresh unique sound and style to the genre.

Second song Genziana (Improvisation 42)* has a more world-weary and serious low-key attitude which allows the band to veer into areas of the Post-Whatever world with fascinating results. The song starts off slowly and moves at its own pace but that's a good thing as you'll begin to absorb the first-rate sounds the band have written for this track. Moving between the quieter themes or elements of their music, L'IRA DEL BACCANO slowly begin to play faster and heavier riffs that sees them play some of the best and most action-packed tracks on the album. This does feel like an ultimate jam session or riff-fest but this one has a sense of purpose especially when L'IRA DEL BACCANO go all out for a bold cinematic conclusion for the song.

The next part of the album sees L'IRA DEL BACCANO adapt a LESS IS MORE approach for the remaining three songs being more direct to the action though there's still a lot of cool PSYCHEDELIC and SPACED OUT music to get through.

Songs such as The Electric Resolution and Cosmic Evoked Potentials have the old-school L'IRA DEL BACCANO sound that I first heard on their 2008 landmark debut release. There's a lot of FUZZY guitars with a killer Prog Rock atmosphere with the band perhaps being more WEEDIAN driven on these two tracks. It is still L'IRA DEL BACCANO through and through with a catchy aggressive feel allowing the band the perfect opportunity to experiment or refine their own sound.

The final song Eclipse Omega runs under the three minutes mark and is more Post-Rock/Ambient driven to the rest of the album but it brings this album to an emotionally driven and satisfactory conclusion.

L'IRA DEL BACCANO put their hearts and souls into this release with stunning instrumental work and sublime SONIC sounds being heard throughout.

This is another masterful, brilliant and exquisite release from L'IRA DEL BACCANO that's helped along by first rate production values and some of the best SONIC experimentation you'll likely to hear this year.

Cosmic Evoked Potentials sees L'IRA DEL BACCANO moving away from their CULT UNDERGROUND STATUS to becoming one of the most important and essential bands of the Instrumental Doom Metal scene.

Chicago's Sludge Noise Rock trio THESE BEASTS releases "making of" video for new single 'Nervous Fingers' taken from the forthcoming album "Cares, Wills, Wants"!

THESE BEASTS unveil a tongue-in-cheek "making of" video for the track 'Nervous Fingers' as the second single takenfrom their forthcoming new album"Cares, Wills, Wants". The crushing new full-length from the Chicago sludgy noise rock trio is slated for release on April 21, 2023 via Magnetic Eye Records. The album pre-sale is available at THIS LOCATION!

Watch the lighthearted video for 'Nervous Fingers' here:

THESE BEASTS comment: "One day at practice, Chris had some nervous fingers and this song popped out", bass player and singer Todd Fabian writes on behalf of the trio. "The title makes sense as the song is pretty manic. It also happens to be the name of one of Chris' previous bands, which meant we had to make sure that they were cool with us using the name for a song title. Thankfully, they were. The track also contains the best line, and most important question, on the whole record: "Who is drouth?"

Tracklist:
1. Code Name
2. Cocaine Footprints
3. Nervous Fingers
4. Pecking Order
5. Blind Eyes
6. Southpaw
7. $10 and Zero Effort
8. Trap Door

"Friends will be friends", legendary QUEEN frontman Freddy Mercury sang and added: "When you're in need of love they give you care and attention" and "When you're through with life and all hope is lost". These words ring true for Chicago's THESE BEASTS.

The sludgy noise rock trio found themselves in a challenging situation while creating their debut album, "Cares, Wills, Wants." The lockdowns, which transformed the city and the band's rehearsal space into something akin to a ghost town, coupled with the loss of friends and family, resulted in a flood of powerful and dark emotions that inevitably found their way into the lyrics and music of "Cares, Wills, Wants".

With "Cares, Wills, Wants", THESE BEASTS deliver the massive debut full-length that their steadily growing following has awaited in the wake of the band's promising first two EPs "Salvor" (2016) and "These Beasts" (2019). Founded by three friends in Chicago, the type of somewhat goofy guys that you might find in any bar or bowling alley across the windy town, it was their mutual love for hard and loud guitar music, and inspiration from such acts as local heroes THE JESUS LIZARD that set them apart from others and bound them firmly together.

Not content with just listening to music and having played in other formations before, singer and guitarist Chris Roo together with drummer Keith Anderson had already joined forces to create music when bass player and vocalist Todd Fabian moved to Chicago. He soon turned out to be the missing link on both a personal and musical level, and out of this friendship, THESE BEASTS came into being in 2015.

The trio started playing locally and quickly gained a reputation as a fierce live act that led them across the United States and earned them a spot at the prestigious Day of Doom Fest in New York. With  "Cares, Wills, Wants", THESE BEASTS aim to continue their conquest of the Americas, but also have every intention to jump across the pond.

"Cares, Wills, Wants" is an emotional rollercoaster ride in the clever disguise of a sludgy noise rock album. THESE BEASTS invite all their friends, old and new, to join their cathartic experience and begin healing through hard music with a brain. Let this record roar!

OCEANLORD reveal video single '2340' and details of the forthcoming new album "Kingdom Cold"!

Australian doom cultists OCEANLORD release the eerie video clip for '2340', the first track taken from their forthcoming new album "Kingdom Cold". The unfathomable debut is slated for release on May 26, 2023 via Magnetic Eye Records. "Kingdom Cold" will be available as a translucent blue vinyl LP and on blue and white marble vinyl, and as Digisleeve CD, the album pre-sale is now available at THIS LOCATION!

The clip for '2340' is now streaming below:

OCEANLORD comment: "The song '2340' is our dirge of treachery named for the hour the Titanic hit the iceberg, written to capture the sense of unreal calm that comes before despair and darkness consumes all", guitarist and vocalist Peter Willmott writes. "We follow a captain in the throes of occult ecstasy who sinks his ship and abandons its passengers to the depths."

Tracklist
1. Kingdom
2. 2340
3. Siren
4. Isle of the Dead
5. So Cold
6. Come Home

Behold! Hark! From the dark depths of the southern oceans, Australian doom trio OCEANLORD have conjured an eldritch monster of an album with their tentacled debut "Kingdom Cold".

Frying guitars with an extra helping of thick fuzz and a crusty top deliver a tasty doom sound. Songs that range from very slow via slow to mid-tempo with occasional outbursts of energy also stand firmly on the rock solid ground of this classic metal genre. OCEANLORD display traces of the American, British and Swedish schools of thought with the clean vocals slightly tilting towards the latter.

Yet below the surface of all the time-honoured elements traditionally associated with doom, there is an extra layer of darkness lurking in these tracks. A foreboding sense of dread, madness, and unspeakable horrors is creeping in to replace the well-worn theme of melancholia usually accompanying the style. This sets OCEANLORD clearly apart from most of their peers. This is no accident, as the Australians are very openly inspired by the horror genre and the writings of New England author Howard Phillips Lovecraft in particular.

OCEANLORD came into being in Melbourne in 2019 when bass-player Jason Ker joined guitarist and singer Peter Willmott for a serious drink to ponder work, family, mortality, and the hellscape of corporate existence. When the conversation turned to music,  the connoisseur of black, death, and progressive metal, Peter, found common ground with Jason, an acolyte of alt-rock and grunge in early heavy metal and doom. Jon May, with his history of punk and rockabilly in Perth followed by country-folk and swamp-blues in Melbourne, did not appear the most obvious choice for the drum-stool, but he brought a secret passion for everything slow and heavy, not to mention a van and good gear.

In the rehearsal room, the initial sound was primal and ponderous, with a glimpse of melody under thick, sludgy riffs. Stoner doom was the answer to save their souls from the slow soul-death of the modern corporate drone. Basement writing sessions began, riffs started flowing, and in 2020, the trio released a demo that caused a stir throughout the doom-underground.

During Melbourne’s dramatic 263 days of pandemic lockdown, Peter built a home studio and in 2022, OCEANLORD tracked their debut release. So beware of this monstrous record: "Kingdom Cold" takes doom to even darker depths than ever explored before!
