Review

Cambrian describe themselves as an “Hawaiian Sludge Doom band born somewhere in time and space, relaxing since then...” - An intriguing concept which they fully explore on their epic sounding debut album – Mobular. Taking influence from Sleep, Black Sabbath, CONAN and even Pink Floyd. Cambrian offer a different kind of Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Metal ride by fusing Hawaiian sounds with a cool lap steel guitar adding a more drone based effect.

All the songs have a nautical feel to them but Cambrian have real talent as they even venture into the vast arena of Space Rock sounds. Songs such as Melt, Seaweed Shaman, Hooded Mantanaut and Emperor Seamount create heavy atmospheric moments where the band plays elements of Doom, Stoner, Sludge and Drone Metal repeatedly on each of the songs. Though here is the key to Cambrian's success. They do this in a wholly original way and one that keeps you coming back for more.

Hooded Mantanaut has a classic Pink Floyd feel merged with heavy Drone/Stoner/Psych sounds and this ranks as my favourite song on the album. It's a beautifully played song with cool psychedelic moments that drift into heavier doom based riffs.

Cambrian are very hard to describe as they've created a daring album that isn't your normal conventional Doom/Stoner Metal album. The band could be playing a heavy droned out riff and then add a traditional Hawaiian sound or chant just for the hell of it. It makes Mobular one of the most refreshing and original debut albums I've heard this year. There are vocals on the album but these are minimal. As the band focus on being a purely instrumental band.

If any Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal fans are going on holiday soon and need some quality relaxing music to chill and get high to. This is the album for you. As Mobular is an outstanding debut album on every level. Why do I have the urge to book a holiday to Hawaii......
