NinjaWitch - Order Of The Red Horse (Album Review)

Release Date: November 08th 2024. Record Label: Self Released. Format: DD

Order Of The Red Horse - Track Listing:

1.Come Alive

2.Tune Low Get High

3.Order of the Red Horse

Review

Order Of The Red Horse is the debut EP from Cosmic/Doom/Stoner Metallers NinjaWitch who are from Knoxville, Tennessee. The band draws influences from bands such as Monster Magnet, SLEEP, FU MANCHU and Nebula. Their debut EP is a cosmic journey into the seedier aspects of the Spaced Out Stoner Rock scene. There’s a vintage element to NinjaWitch’s overall sound which would make Dave Wyndorf proud and this record could easily be classed as the perfect companion piece to Stoner Rocker’s VOLUME latest mini album Joy Of Navigation (a trip through the eternal unknown).

The opening track of Come Alive is over eight minutes of twisted Psychedelic and Space Rock exploration which is powered by drug fuelled vocals which have a shamanic style to them. The music seems neverending at times with NinjaWitch fully exploring that Space Rock swagger of their full on Stoner Rock vision. The movement can be twisted at times but NinjaWitch have perfectly tapped into that classic 1990’s Stoner Metal sound which becomes quite filthy and nasty at times but brilliantly majestic throughout.

The final two tracks of Tune Low Get High and Order Of The Red Horse captures the true essence of the Stoner Rock and WEEDIAN movement with the Space Rock atmospheres increasingly becoming more reliant on the sludgy psychedelic guitars. The vocals once again rely on that SHAMANIC style we’ve heard multiple times before but they’re delivered with supreme confidence that fully sells the whole COSMIC and SPACE ROCK illusion that NinjaWitch crafts superbly well.

Order Of The Red Horse is perhaps best described as: “The best record that Monster Magnet never released”. And I mean that as a huge compliment. NinjaWitch still add their own take on things with movements of  Distorted Paranoia and Droned Out Psychedelics taking a bigger part within their overall sound especially within Tune Low Get High.

Order Of The Red Horse allows NinjaWitch to announce their arrival to the underground scene in a big way. This EP maybe quite surreal at times but the overall effect is like coming down from a drug induced nightmarish trip and being treated to some of the best grooves you’ve heard in quite some time.

NinjaWitch are most definitely a band to look out for in 2025 and beyond.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Grunge/Doom/Stoner Metallers Wormsand undergo a Sludgy metamorphosis for their epic new album You, The King. Taking cues from bands such as MONOLORD, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and YOB, the band don’t seem afraid to experiment with genre rules and conventions and putting everything through the creative blender for a record that’s quite cinematic within both the HEAVIER and QUIETER moments. The atmosphere can be considered part of the LOW & SLOW brigade but Wormsand are quite adverse by delivering a heavy groove that elevates their music to a muscular style of Atmospheric Sludge with Fuzz Rock and Post-Metal surroundings.

The opening two tracks of Daydream and Digging Deep. The songs do have a different creative strategy to each other with Wormsand offering Progressive Rock, Grunge, Stoner and Fuzz Rock passages for Daydream before venturing into an almost Blackened Doom Metal theme with Digging Deep. The vocals are mostly clean based but Digging Deep allows Wormsand to employ a more subtle and harsher style that matches the pitch-black FUZZED UP grooves the band are expertly conjuring up throughout the whole album.

Once again Wormsand blend Post-Stoner and Post-Rock lore into their music which can be quite abstract, heavy and beautifully muted at the same time. With moments of down-tuned distortion allowing the instruments to playing their own haunting style of destructive and apocalyptic melodies on tracks such as You, The King and Black Heaven.

The band are currently signed to Mars Red Sky record label MRS Red Sound and you can see that legendary band’s influence within Wormsand’s sound as well especially when the music moves from the quieter strands of Post-Stoner surroundings to an aggressive style Doom Metal which can be quite uplifting to hear at times. Though, it’s the Grunge aspect of You, The King and Wormsand’s music that’s the creative glue holding everything together. There’s a seedy Grunge vibe which allows Wormsand to branch out into other areas of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal without compromising their entire creative vision for You, The King.

If you’re a dedicated follower of FUZZ and LOW & SLOW music then Wormsand have you fully covered on the second half of the album with You, The King going even heavier and further for those aspects of music especially on tracks such as: Drawn, The Crown and To Die Alone. This is perhaps the most riff-centric part of the album with down-tuned guitars and a thrilling rhythm section creating a violent atmosphere for Wormsand to deliver slabs of DESTRUCTIVE FUZZ and SLUDGY GROOVES that can be quite deafening to hear at times but that’s one of the main strengths of the whole album.

You, The King is an outstanding album from Wormsand and one that can easily be classed as one of the year’s best albums even this late into the year. I expect to see You, The King to become a firm favourite of the underground scene for many years to come and could be the catalyst for Wormsand to establish themselves as one of the most promising and brilliantly creative bands to emerge out from the French Sludge/Stoner Metal underground scene in quite some time.

1000MODS - Cheat Death (Album Review)

Release Date: November 08th 2024. Record Label: Ouga Booga and the Mighty Oug Recordings / Ripple Music. Format: CD/DD/Vinyl

Cheat Death - Track Listing:

1.Overthrown

2.The one who keeps me down

3.Götzen Hammer

4.Astral Odor

5.Love

6.Speedhead

7.Misery

8.Bluebird

9.Cheat Death

10.Grey, Green Blues

Review

Stoner Rock legends 1000MODS return with Cheat Death which is their first full-length album in four years and it’s everything you want from the band. Focusing upon a wider and heavier narrative compared to previous albums, 1000MODS deliver a heavy hitting blend of Doom, Fuzz, Psych, Sludge and Stoner Metal that sees the band delve into areas of Heavy Metal. The sound has a slightly dark and rebellious narrative which appears right away within the sublime opening track of Overthrown.

The sound is cautiously aggressive with subtle flashes of Stoner Rock/Metal imagery the band have delivered time and time again but this time round there’s a fast-paced Psych Rock and Punk Rock sound bursting through the seams. The lure of 1980’s Classic Heavy Guitar shredding plays a big part of Overthrown which appears throughout the album though 1000MODS throw a few welcome surprises along the way.

The music here is played with deft sounding precision with 1000MODS honing their musical and technical ability unlike ever before. Though, the band never lost sight of what made them such a beloved and well-respected band within the Stoner Metal field with the majority of the tracks sticking to that sound quite closely with room for experimentation as well. Check out tracks such as The One Who Keeps Me Down and Götzen Hammer.

1000MODS showcase a fine style of raw-sounding aggression and psychedelic soundscapes which has an air of intensity which sees the band bring a fresh DOOMED OUT perspective to their creative core. The album is benefited by the heavyweight talents of Matt Bayles who co-produced the album, mixed and engineered the album as well. Brad Boatright is on mastering duties at his famed Audioseige lair and the results are spectacular from start to finish.

Cheat Death is at it’s strongest and heaviest when 1000MODS go slightly off script by blending different styles of Heavy Rock we haven’t heard from them before. There’s moments of Alt Rock, Punk Rock and Heavy Metal that feel out of place at first but the band pull out a cool sounding riff that holds everything together which allows the album to be 1000MODS most exciting record in years. With influences as diverse as Motorhead, The Ramones, MC5, Black Sabbath KYUSS and FU MANCHU being heard at times, 1000MODS still create their own original blend of melodic driven Stoner Rock/Metal with hard hitting lyrics to match.

The second half sees a huge STADIUM ROCK swagger starting to appear on tracks such as Speedhead, Misery, Cheat Death and the wonderful standout final track of Grey, Green Blues. There’s perhaps an element of “NOTHING IS WHAT IT SEEMS” appearing with how 1000MODS deliver their music with different musical compositions and melodic structures taking you by complete surprise which rewards the listener with some classic sounding instrumental passages and heavy STONED OUT guitar solos.

Cheat Death is perhaps the album that announces and cements 1000MODS reputation as one of TITANS of the global STONER ROCK/METAL scene. This is a future classic album in the making and perhaps 1000MODS landmark record to date.

'DETROIT' - THE NEW SINGLE

New tour = new music. We're over the moon to get new material out there.

'Detroit' is massive slab of striking noise rock about a hideous man with even worse behaviours. Better we let Matt take it from here: "Detroit reflects on the worst manifestations of male jealousy and resentment, and the ways in which the deliberate avoidance of accountability can lead to deflecting responsibility in exchange for blaming external forces like fate or God for perceived injustice".

Recorded by Sam at Blank Studios in Newcastle upon Tyne a bit earlier this year.

And we made a music video! Shot by the brilliant photographer Ellen Dixon, who also took the photo at the top of this mailout.

Stream, download or watch the video here: https://pigsx7.ffm.to/detroit

Proceeds that this track generates in 2024 we'll be donating to domestic abuse charities ahead of the tour.

Review

Stoner Rock visionaries Sergeant Thunderhoof return with their new album The Ghost Of Badon Hill which arrives two years after their critically acclaimed masterpiece This Sceptred Veil. This was always going to be a tough job topping that incredible release and I still believe it’s their best album to date. However, The Ghost Of Badon Hill is another stirring and emotionally charged classic album from the guys. This time round THE HOOF are diving deep into the local history, mythology and folklore surrounding their hometown in Somerset, exploring the famous Battle of Badon.

The record continues the beautiful and complex melodies of their previous album but give it a more FOLK and HISTORICAL inspired spin which doesn’t can be quite hard hitting and realistic with the lyrics the band have written for this album.

The opening tracks of Badon and Blood Moon allows Sergeant Thunderhoof to set up the scene with blistering grooves and aggressive Psychedelic sounds with lead vocalist Dan Flitcroft proving why he’s one of the best vocalists and lead frontmen within the UK Stoner Rock/Metal scene right now. His performance is quite emotional and deeply intense when he sings those epic HIGH notes especially on Blood Moon. You can tell the lyrics resonate quite deeply and personally for Dan and even made myself quite emotional at times.

The music is some of the heaviest that Sergeant Thunderhoof have written to date and explores areas of music they haven’t played before.

The Ghost Of Badon Hill is quite a forward thinking and deeply progressive record which explores the human sacrifices made with neverending wars and even with this record being influenced by historical events, this record perfectly resonates with all the horrible battles currently going on in the world. However, as the record continues, Sergeant Thunderhoof brings moments of uplifting positivity in the most unexpected of places throughout the album.

This is Sergeant Thunderhoof at their most cinematic best and once again proves why they’re the most naturally gifted and highly original storytellers of the whole Stoner Rock/Metal scene which is proven on tracks such as The Orb Of Octavia, Salvation For The Soul and Beyond The Hill.

With a burgeoning Sludge Rock/Metal vibe starting to form on the later stages of the album, Sergeant Thunderhoof always continues to develop and transform their music into something completely different that has come before it. This allows each of the individual tracks to have their own distinctive sound and identity to each other with epic moments of Post Rock, Ambient and Doom Metal being used to great effect.

The Ghost Of Badon Hill is dedicated to the memory of Roger Densham who sadly passed away recently. Roger was from the same home town (Bath, UK) as Sergeant Thunderhoof and was part of the excellent Psych Doom Rock band DOOMICIDAL. I interviewed Roger way back in April 2019 and he was a lovely person to interview.

Sergeant Thunderhoof never ceases to amaze me by releasing one brilliant album after another and that winning streak continues with The Ghost Of Badon Hill which is going to be considered one of the landmark albums to own this year. These guys are on the verge of true greatness and this maybe the album solidifies that reputation once and for all.

Review

Shi - 死 return with their third full length album Pure Disgust and it’s a heavy assortment of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal sounds with quite a definitive Experimental edge appearing in certain places. Shi - 死 are at least thinking outside the box with the usual sludgy surroundings we expect from a very cool and well put together album such as. I’m still not fully on board with Trumpets being added to the mix even if it’s played superbly well by guest musician Curt Cummings.

Overall, Pure Disgust is a deliciously heavy bout of aggressive instrumental sounds merged with FUCKED UP distorted and warped melodies. There’s a dash of HARSH GROWLS allowing Shi - 死 to explore a slightly Death/Doom aspect to the music with their deliciously FUZZ driven music being quite Psychedelic and Classic Hard Rock especially on tracks such as Bastard, Dex and Ratway Warrens.

Pure Disgust sees Shi - 死 play music similar to bands such as BONGZILLA, Church Of Misery, WEEDEATER and DOPETHRONE though adding their own experimental twist on the more outlandish parts of the record. For the most part, the sound is most definitely from the underground Sludge/Stoner Metal scene with seedy production values appearing and Shi - 死 playing music that is proudly part of the WEEDIAN scene with dirty grooves that should come with a government health warning.

There’s quite a good use of Hard Rock, Heavy Metal and NOLA appearing though being played mostly behind the filth-ridden STONER melodies and murky waters of the evil DOOMED OUT landscapes with the lyrics being a sinister delight to listen especially with lead vocalist Bael’s persona giving them an extra layer of seediness and demonic heaviness to them.

Other standout tracks include: Ox Goad Blues, The Howl, Pure Disgust, Soon Enough and ZBTC. It’s within these tracks where you begin to notice the band’s passionate style of Blues Rock, Boogie Rock and Southern Metal starting to fully take over. Perhaps a tad more traditional in places with the extra sense of dread starting to form more and more. Shi - 死 always stick to their creative choices with pure conviction and always with a menacing appetite that allows Pure Disgust to be their most brutally entertaining record to date.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

UK Stoner Rockers DUNES to release new album "Land of the Blind" on Ripple Music; stream new single "Voodoo" (feat. Ryan Garney of High Desert Queen)

Newcastle-based Stoner Rock power trio DUNES announce the release of their third studio album "Land of the Blind" this January 17th on Ripple Music, and unleash their new single "Voodoo" featuring High Desert Queen frontman Ryan Garney. The band also announced a full winter tour, kicking off on January 25th in Manchester.

Watch their new "Voodoo" video at this location + listen to the song on all streaming services

About the song, Dunes say: "Voodoo is about those times when you feel you 'can't do right for doing wrong' as the saying goes, you try but it still goes belly up anyway. The track features Ryan Garney from High Desert Queen, we played together when they first came over to the UK in 2022 and we've been great friends since then. When we toured together in 2023 he joined us on stage a bunch of times, so when it came to writing and recording the new album we figured it'd be fun to have him sing on a song. We gave him free rein to add some tasty backing vocals and we were stoked with what he sent back!"

Since Dunes first formed, they have striven to write riff-driven songs with a deliberate emphasis on hooks and choruses and ‘Land Of The Blind’ really hones in on both of these facets. Thematically, ‘Land Of The Blind’ touches on anxiety, the passing of time, relationships and the general horrors of the outside world and what we do to avoid and cope with them, but there are glimpses of humour and hope tightly woven in.

In November 2023 Dunes headed up to Old Church Studios in Thropton, Northumberland in the far North of England to record 'Land of the Blind' with Adam Forster acting as studio engineer and Dunes drummer Nikky Watson as producer. The fantastic old church has a great-sounding room and an otherworldly atmosphere, allowing the band to fully immerse themselves into the making of the album. Alongside special guest Ryan Garney from High Desert Queen on the second single "Voodoo", the album also features Nick Carter (formerly of the legendary Newcastle-based post-punk outfit Crane) on the song "Northern Scar". ‘Land Of The Blind’ is an album that the band are incredibly proud of and are excited to get it out into the world. ► Don't miss their latest video for "Riding The Low"!

Hailing from Newcastle, UK, DUNES are known for marrying up hard-hitting riffs with earworm melodies, channeling a handful of Northern grit through the fuzzed-out, cranked-up, trip-tinged sounds of the infamous generator parties of the 90s desert rock scene, and the beer-soaked, sweat-drenched and feedback-engulfed clubs of the grunge era.

DUNES has earned a solid reputation on the UK stoner rock scene, sharing the stage with he likes of Fatso Jeston, Nick Oliveri, Alain Johannes, Red Fang, High Desert Queen, Monster Magnet, Sasquatch, Truckfighters and more, also performing at a plethora of festivals including Desertfest London, Bloodstock Open Air, Masters of the riff, Ruination Festival and Idelfest in the UK, and overseas at Fuzz Festival Stockholm and Malmö (SE) and Love For Loud Festival (NO).

The trio is now ready to blast more fuzzy greatness into all heavy rock lovers' ears as they recently joined the roster of renowned Californian label Ripple Music for the release of their new album "Land of the Blind" on January 17th, 2025.
