Craneium - Empty Palaces (Single Review)

Release Date: November 22nd 2024. Record Label: Majestic Mountain Records. Formats: DD

Empty Palaces - Track Listing:

Empty Palaces

Review

Finnish Stoner Rock heroes Craneium have had a stellar year already by releasing their latest album Point Of No Return to critical acclaim and now the guys have just announced they’ve signed up with the brilliant record label Majestic Mountain Records for their next album due to be released in 2025. To celebrate this fact, the band have released their new song Empty Palaces and it’s quite a departure to the COSMIC surroundings from Point Of No Return.

Craneium deliver a 1970’s Heavy Rock inspired track that’s spliced with their trademark 1990’s Stoner Rock/Metal sound. Taking cues from bands such as Blue Oyster Cult, Saint Vitus and Black Sabbath on this track but with an aggressive Post-Stoner groove that offers slight glimpses to their trademark sound. The vocals are catchy yet again with superb lyrics that are quite easy to remember so you can join in with the Stoned Out magical themes Craneium deliver here.

There is still a sense of gloominess hidden behind the meaning of the lyrics and with the psychedelic instrumental passages that showcase that Craneium could potentially be delivering their heaviest record to date with their upcoming new album.

Overall, Empty Palaces is a first rate track from one of Finland’s finest Stoner Rock bands currently out there who manage to deliver another outstanding slice of Stoner Rock magic.

Review

Hollow Mirage is the debut EP from UK Doom/Stoner Metallers AMNABYS who play a low down dirty style of distorted grooves and downtuned beats influenced by the likes of SLEEP, Electric Wizard, Black Sabbath and Belzebong. The atmosphere is mostly powered by a subtle seedy WEEDIAN atmosphere with the band making good on their creative promise of playing thick drone rhythms and subtle ambient textures. AMNABYS throw the added measure of DOOMADELIC soundclips along the way especially within the powerful opening track of SUBJECT 1.

The EP is quite a dark and unflinching style of Doom/Stoner Metal and whilst it’s not the most original sound that hasn’t stopped AMNABYS delivering a disturbing journey into the darkest and filthier depths of the underground WEEDIAN scene.

There is perhaps some early-era Electric Wizard riff worship going on but the band demonstrate their willingness to experiment with their music and add levels of hallucinogenic Drone Metal surroundings especially within the Psychedelic passages that comes mostly through the epic rhythm section of Harry A on Drums and Chris G on Bass respectively. Chris G on guitars has a mean outlook with the thick heavy sludgy guitars that perhaps delves even further into the Drone Metal masses especially on the subsequent tracks of SUBJECT 2 and SUBJECT 3.

AMNABYS play a vivid style of Rock and Metal throughout their debut EP which lasts around twenty minutes in length. There’s plenty of riff-centric moments to slowly head-bang along to though Hollow Mirage is perhaps at its most strongest and strangest when the punishing HEAVY DOOMED OUT sounds take over for a more aggressive vibe. Another aspect I enjoyed was AMNABYS great use of Ambient themes and Psychedelic movements that aims for a slightly warped SPACED OUT dynamic which will perhaps become a more central theme on their future releases.

Hollow Mirage is quite rough around the edges especially with the production values but it works superbly well for the overall tone that AMNABYS manage to deliver throughout the whole EP. With that said, Hollow Mirage is an exciting EP with the band proving they’re most definitely a band to give a damn about and to keep an eye on in the future.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Instrumental Stoner Metallers Six Months Of Sun awaken from a six year slumber with their new album Creatures which focuses upon legendary mythical and fictional creatures as it’s main creative theme with each song title representing a fabled deadly creature. You have mentions of Zaratan, Shai-Hulud (from DUNE), Gevaudan, Ningin, Jersey Devil and Wendigo listed on the album. The music itself is one of gloomy Psychedelic Stoner Metal sounds influenced by the likes of Karma To Burn, Pelican and Russian CIrcles.

I remember these guys being more associated with the Desert/Stoner Rock scene for their previous albums but they have evolved into a fully formed Progressive unit with elements of Post-Rock, Post-Metal and Sludge Metal appearing within their music. The sound is quite harsh and barren with a cold hearted structure appearing within the instrumental grooves that Six Months Of Sun employ here. The album is quite fast-paced and with a sudden sense of urgency as the music has a subtle metallic energy with heavy amounts of Atmospheric Sludge sounds that responds to the intricate glitchy beats that the band include along the way.

Six Months Of Sun brings the classic sounds of the 90’s Desert/Stoner Rock scene but brings it kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. Each track has its own great style of storytelling even despite this being a fully fledged instrumental rock/metal album. One of the standout parts of the record is when Six Months Of Sun focuses primarily on the Post-Metal and Sludge Rock aspect of their music. As everything becomes aggressive with a subtle APOCALYPTIC sound that brings a foreboding sense of darkness to the album especially on tracks such as Gevaudan, Vatnagedda, Jersey Devil and Wendigo.

Six Months Of Sun still manage to find the time to add a sense of abrasive melody to the record without compromising their new found harsh cinematic sound that allows Creatures to become essential listening especially if you’re a dedicated follower of the Instrumental Sludge/Stoner Metal underground scene.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Montreal, Canada's Tumbleweed Dealer, the enigmatic musical project led by Sebastien Painchaud, is set to make a triumphant return with their highly anticipated fourth studio album, “Dark Green”. After an eight-year hiatus, the band is ready to unveil their most ambitious and genre-defying work to date, scheduled for release on February 7, 2025. “Dark Green" represents a significant evolution in Tumbleweed Dealer's sound, pushing the boundaries of their bluesy, desert-rock roots into uncharted territories. They comment on this evolution:

“Our first 2 albums created the color palette with which we paint. The third album showed that these colors can paint very different pictures. We didn’t need to be a stoner/psychedelic rock to still sound like us. On this latest album, we took all these different directions and pushed our music even further. We streamlined it into a unique experience that still maintained the original spirit of the band’s sound.”

The album's artwork, revealed today, captures the essence of the “Dark Green” experience. This visual representation sets the stage for the album's themes of nature, introspection, and the blurring lines between reality and imagination.

To give fans a taste of what's to come, Tumbleweed Dealer has released a tantalizing teaser for "Dark Green." This brief audio-visual snippet offers a glimpse into the lush, atmospheric soundscapes and intricate compositions that await listeners. Fans can expect an intricate blend of blues, math rock, post-rock, and various other influences, all woven together into a cohesive and immersive musical tapestry. It is recommended for fans of Camel, Toe, and Opeth.

Review

Florida Psych/Stoner Rockers Orbiter AIM BIG with their second full length album Distorted Folklore and once again sees the band go under a creative structure yet again with the band moving from their Doom-Pop surroundings of their acclaimed 2022 EP Head Wounds. That release saw the band being influenced by fellow Florida legends FLOOR and TORCHE. Orbiter’s debut album Southern Failures was powered by Desert/Stoner Rock sounds with the band once again keeping with their chameleon-like transformation for each record they have released.

This time round on Distorted Folklore, Orbiter continue with the epic Doom-Pop atmospherics heard on their last EP but with the band heavily leaning into areas of Shoegaze, Doom, Sludge, Indie Rock and Alt Rock for a record that’s constantly heavy but with the band playing a great original style of their own. The album is spread across nine tracks running for around forty six minutes in length with a classic style of Space Rock that HUM would be proud to call their own.

The “Shoegaze” or “Doomgaze” aspect is a big part of Distorted Folklore with Orbiter experimenting with other styles of music with lush moments of Psychedelic Heaviness and Distorted Drone melodies that are played from the very start. Teaming up once again Jonathan Nuñez who engineered, mixed and mastered the album, the record sounds blissfully heavy and quite forward thinking through each individual track. The vocals from Jon Reinertsen capture the classic Alt Rock/Indie Rock vibe brilliantly with a dominant and passionate vocal performance.

The first batch of tracks Safe As Houses, Time Rips and Lightning Miles allows Orbiter to open the gateway to a more soulful style of Psychedelic Stoner Rock with a subdued embrace of Space Rock, Grunge and Alt Rock that all combine together for music that’s quite uplifting and brilliantly destructive when the heavier Sludge Rock/Metal grooves that appear out of nowhere.

As the band say themselves: “Distorted Folklore" is a loose concept album, and as the songs play out, listeners will be taken on a journey where the protagonist questions his sanity and struggles with loss, isolation, heartbreak, drug addiction, societal collapse, and comes right to the brink of a full-on existential crisis.”

It’s hard to pick out the standout tracks on the record as they’re all equally as great as each other. All of the tracks are passionate with considerable groove and melody allowing the tracks to generate a NATURAL HIGH that can be quite euphoric no matter what style of music that Orbiter employ on certain stages of the album.

If you’re a fan of bands such as HUM, TORCHE, FLOOR, The Pixies Black Sabbath, EARTH, FU MANCHU and The Cure then you’ll easily find something to admire here as there are moments where Orbiter are inspired by those legendary bands throughout the album but still creating their own original sound.

The second half of the album does become more emotional and leans quite heavily into areas of Post-Rock whilst keeping within their heavy melodic and down-tuned sounds on tracks such as Coil, I’ll See You On The Backside Of Water… and Svalbard.

The biggest surprise for me is Orbiter’s rendition of the classic Talking Heads track This Must Be The Place. As they pay homage to that track that sounds eerily familiar but also doing their own stunning version of this track. The sludgy guitars and multi layered Psychedelic pastures are a joy to listen to with all the band members putting in first rate performances that leaves the album in a more hopeful place than it first started.

Distorted Folklore is one of the most soulful, happy, uplifting, destructive, truthful and insightful records you’ll hear this year and perhaps releasing one of the standout albums of the year even this late into the game.

WOW. End Of.

Iron Slug - Unrepentant Grin (EP Review)

Release Date: December 06th 2024. Record Label: Self Released. Formats: DD

Unrepentant Grin - Track Listing:

Depraved

My Eyes Learn

Truth Served

Final Proposal

Vocals/Guitar - Will Rayner

Drums - Tino Di-Donato

Bass - Will Bond

Review

Sludge/Doom Metallers Iron Slug return with their new EP Unrepentant Grin which follows their previous excellent EP Debauched And Bored. The band play a mean sounding version of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal that’s helped along by a bleak sense of nihilistic Grunge and NOLA melodies that appear throughout the record. Inspired by bands such as CONAN, DOWN, ALICE IN CHAINS, Saint Vitus and Goatsnake with a familiar down-tuned and seedy philosophy which is shown through every aspect of Iron Slug’s creative vision.

The EP is an essential part of the modern day Doom/Sludge Metal scene with seedy psychedelic guitars with that NOLA vibe appearing within the guitars which sees Iron Slug performing an element of Post-Doom surroundings along the way. There’s moments of HARSH vocals and sonic landscapes which adds a lot of guitar reverb and amplifier feedback which impresses very early on within the superb opening tracks of Depraved and My Eyes Learn.

Unrepentant Grin does have an OCCULT METAL  appetite with moments of classic DOOM soundbytes that could have easily gone way over the top or too theatrical but Iron Slug avoid this pitfall by playing a non-stop style of classic sounding Sludgy Metal guitars with extra layers of menacing FUZZ that feels like you’re being punched right in the gut.

The final two tracks Truth Served and Final Proposal continues with the seedy exploration of fast-paced sludgy and weedian based instrumental passages that have a more demonic presence to them which once again puts Iron Slug outside the normal Doom/Sludge Metal structure and allowing them to create their own highly original style of music.

Unrepentant Grin is the type of EP the UK Doom/Sludge Scene will ultimately go FUCKING CRAZY for. As it’s packed full of “orrible” and “incredible” grooves from a band who have the talent and creative resources to make a huge name for themselves in the future.

Watch out for IRON SLUG as this EP proves these guys are really going places.

Veuve - Pole (Album Review)

Release Date: November 15th 2024. Record Label: Go Down Records. Formats: CD/DD/Vinyl

Pole - Track Listing:

1.Land Of Denial 07:30

2.The Thaw 06:26

3.Quest For Fire 11:43

4.Inner Desert 11:44

5.The Sudden Light 11:59

6.Thrive On Empty Temples 08:11

Review

Pole is the exciting third album from Psych Stoner Rockers Veuve where they add a bold and adventurous spirit into their music compared to their previous albums. The sound is quite cosmic based but also offers a grounded sense of reality within the warm hearted vocals and hard rocking lyrics. Veuve plays with  a subtle heavy Psychedelic narrative appearing with plenty of FUZZ ROCK surroundings especially within the opening tracks of Land Of Denial and The Thaw. With a reliance on bass heavy musical structures and sludgy maneuvers that bring in aggressive style of Psych Doom to the masses.

The album has a similar style of music played by the likes of King Buffalo, All Them Witches, Weedpecker and Elder but keeping within their Italian Psych Rock heritage that allows the band the perfect opportunity to build heavier musical surroundings that become quite progressivr along the way. The album is inspired by Fantasy, Horror and Science Fiction throughout the album where the listener can easily tell which TV or Film property inspired certain sections of the album.

Veuve employ a 1970’s Prog Rock and Hard Rock structure on the less abrasive and quieter parts of the album whilst leaving the modern day Sludge/Stoner aspects building up a catchy and aggressive rhythm especially with the haunting synths and psychedelic soundscapes that are the best parts of the whole album.

The clean sounding vocals are another highlight to the album which allows the listener to focus solely on the story without any harsh vocals or growls disrupting the cinematic flow. The majority of the tracks are on the long side ranging from six minutes to eleven minutes in length.  Veuve go all out on Pole with long drawn out instrumental grooves and ambient textures that can be ice-cold to hear at times especially on tracks such as Quest For Fire, Inner Desert and The Sudden Light which is perhaps the standout section of the whole album.

Veuve play the heaviest sounds on these tracks alone with a Sludge Rock/Metal appetite merging with the classic sounds of 1970’s Prog Rock and Hard Rock with a sense of 1990’s based Grunge and Alt-Rock. The 1970’s musical melodies are beautifully poetic with a deft Blues Rock touch that was quite an unexpected surprise that gives the album a sense of real human worth. Though, Veuve are not afraid to transform into monolithic SLUDGE RIFF SLAYING monsters with a destructive style that feels like it came from a totally different band altogether.

Pole is an album that veers off into one hundred different directions but I mean that as a HUGE compliment as everything comes together at the right moment with Veuve delivering a non-stop array of outstanding riffs, grooves and sounds until the very end. This is a quality sounding album and one that deserves to be heard by the biggest audience possible.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
