Drone/Doom/Stoner Metallers Release New Video For MONASTERY OF THE SEVEN AGES From Their New Album BRAHMAN

Drone/Doom/Stoner Metallers BREATH release their epic new music video for Monastery of the Seven Sages from their recent acclaimed album BRAHMAN..

The band says this about the video:

"Monastery of the Seven Sages peers into a distant proto-bronze age landscape obscured by the fog of time. The power and bond of ‘as above so below’ is conveyed through filmmaker Erik Meharry’s vision for our music video. His inspiration from the song birthed a whole outline of Lynchian depth that made us all too eager for him to be at the helm.A song following steps like Oannes, looking to the wild horizon of space and Earth and finding connection."

Brahman is available to buy now on CD/DD/Vinyl via Argonauta Records.

Drone/Doom/Stoner Metallers Breath release their second musical opus with Brahman and it’s equally different and similar to their celebrated 2021 debut album Primeval Transmissions. The band live and breathe MEDITATIVE DOOM throughout this album but still allow themselves their music to form melodies, musical compositions with real SPACED OUT and PROGRESSIVE depth to their music. Brahman may operate on a different Psychedelic and Drone Metal plane to us mere mortals but the record is equally mysterious, comforting and deeply philosophical with Breath developing areas of music that reminds of bands such as SLEEP, YOB, SUNN 0))) and OM whilst also striving to be their own thing.

The opening track of Monastery Of The Seven Sages is perhaps the closest we’ll ever get to the likes of SUNN 0))) and SLEEP jamming for one mighty instrumental WEEDIAN session that transcends multiple dimensions. The vocals from Stephen O’Kelly retain their shamanic quality to them. The swirling psychedelics and slow-paced riff-centric mechanics all combine for a Drone Rock exercise of the highest order.

Second track Awen sees Breath tap into their Space Rock psyche once more with a Sludge Rock riff-fuelled dynamic transforming into hazy amounts of modern day Heavy Psych with flashes of Jimi Hendrix style theatrics courtesy of Rob Wrong’s supremely intelligent guitars. Al Cisernos is most definitely a huge influence with the band’s lyrics and bass playing for main frontman Steven O’Kelly to weave his magical sounds upon the listener. The music becomes quite intense and fast-paced with Breath blending different styles of Cosmic Rock imagery that’s trapped between Drone Rock and Sludge Rock melodies.

Third track Sanliurf allows keyboardist Lauren Hutch to play a mighty fine style of hallucinogenic keyboards to open the SPACE ROCK and EASTERN portal for the rest of the band to build their music around upon. The song is quite slow-paced and highly mysterious though the Art-Rock guitars that Rob Wrong injects into the mix. The first rate progressive drumming from Ian Caton provides the “engine” for this track which joins the heaviest melodies and psychedelic sections altogether. When Breath decide to play a standard “riff-centric” style of music you can’t help being reminded of The Velvet Underground with jagged guitars, experimental cosmic noises and other flashes of sludgy weirdness currently going on in the background.

Fourth track Sages is the track that could have easily been released from their last record as it has similar themes, textures and heavy rock structures but Breath add that frenzied Space Rock movement that showcases a classic style of Nineties Spaced Out Stoner Rock that the likes of Monster Magnet made infamous back in the day. Breath offers a contemporary and glitchy spin with overlapping grooves all vying for musical superiority. This is one of the strangest and standout tracks on the whole album especially if you took certain “herbal” substances to make your journey ever so more pleasant.

The final two tracks of Cedars Of Lebanon and Hy-Brasil shows Breath in a more subdued direction with a loving Post-Doom melody forming within Cedars Of Lebanon which is fully moved over to the epic twelve minute final track of Hy-Brasil. Echoes of The Velvet Underground and Ravi Shankar form within one final sonic journey into surreal levels of distorted heaviness.

Brahman is one of the most perfect “MEDITATIVE DOOM” records I’ve heard in a very long time that will leave your mind, body, soul and spirit wholly cleansed and refreshed within this dimension, multiverse and beyond.

Incredible. End Of.

Doom/Stoner Metallers BREATH unveils their first single “AWEN” from upcoming new album releasing this Fall on Argonauta Records

Having recently signed with Argonauta Records, Portland, Oregon’s BREATH release “AWEN”. The first single and official music video from their much-anticipated new album BRAHMAN, releasing this Fall.

Watch the video below:

The beginnings of Breath can be traced back to childhood friends Steven O’Kelly and Ian Caton. Their bond allowed a drive of songwriting and spiritual seeking to coalesce into a unique foundation that continues to evolve. It's losing themselves in the woods or meditation, and transmuting those experiences into the vibrational space their musical fingerprint holds. Longtime Breath collaborator and engineer Rob Wrong (Witch Mountain & The Skull) was quickly inspired by their new release BRAHMAN, writing and performing guitar for the entirety of their album. Along with Guitar came Keys, which further elevated the sound with the addition of Lauren Hatch.

In the fertile environment of new instrumentation, “AWEN” expands the boundaries of Breath to new places.

The band comments:

“Crawling out from their hermitage, the Druid begins anew in rays shone through the prism of AWEN. Harnessing the addition of guitar, we seek to translate the immutable voice of Mother Nature calling from depths of emerald sanctuary. A song honoring the unspoken confluence, and creative spark between Bard and woods. AWEN binds the overarching metaphysical spirit of our new album BRAHMAN with transformation lifted on the wings of the Morrigan. AWEN emerges in the light of this Goddess, and the transitory half Moon on July 17th .”

Stay tuned for more details on BRAHMAN, coming this Fall on Argonauta Records.

Portland’s Meditative Doom Seekers BREATH Sign with Argonauta Records

Portland, Oregon’s meditative doom seekers BREATH have found a new home with Italy’s Argonauta Records! Their sound is a cultivated vehicle of stillness, riding the churning white water of doom metal flow. Beginning with a solid foundation of bass and drums, the duo is joined by keys and guitar, with collaborator Rob Wrong of Witch Mountain engineering the project, ushering in a new dawn of verdant growth.

Known for their immersive and transcendent take on doom metal, BREATH crafts a sound that merges meditative stillness with crushing sonic waves. They draw inspiration from bands like Earth, OM, Grails, as well as the timeless influence of Black Sabbath and Ravi Shankar.

Founded by childhood friends Steven O’Kelly and Ian Caton, BREATH evolved from years of collaboration as an inseparable rhythm section. This bond led them to explore their own unique voice. Their debut album, Primeval Transmissions, was originally released in 2021 via Desert Records, featuring the masterful engineering of Rob Wrong (Witch Mountain) and mastering by the legendary Tad Doyle. Wrong also contributed guitar work to key tracks, including Halls of Amenti, which was re-released in a remixed and remastered edition in 2023.

With an expansive musical vision that blends high-decibel doom, hypnotic Eastern influences, and dynamic rhythmic textures, BREATH has continued to evolve, incorporating Lauren Hatch on keys in 2023 and Justin Acevedo on guitar in 2024.

Now, as they embark on the next chapter of their journey with Argonauta Records, BREATH is ready to bring their unique sonic meditations to a global audience. Stay tuned for more details on their upcoming releases!

Review

Doom/Stoner Metallers Breath originally released their debut album Primeval Transmissions back in February 2021 to acclaim from fans and critics alike. Now, two years later the band have re-released the album as Primeval Transmissions (REMIXED & REMASTERED).

As the title suggests, this album has been rebuilt from the ground up throughout the album. The album has been remixed by Rob Wrong who also adds new electric guitars on Observer and Halls Of Amenti. The album has also been remastered by Justin Weis and both parties bring a heavier, clearer and more organic sound compared to the original.

That’s only the half of it with Breath adding fresh vocal tracks for songs Evocation and Battle for Harmonic Balance/ Halls of Amenti. There’s too much to mention what Breath has given Primeval Transmissions. This is the type of creative journey and makeover that transpired for the legendary Dopesmoker when it was known as Jerusalem or available as a much sought after Bootleg Album from TeePee Records.

My original review of the album still stands which you can read here. The whole message and adventurous journey remains but there’s still something different about this album now. There’s a more mysterious message and adventurous journey to this album. The music is heavier, longer, cleaner and dare I say more hopeful in places especially on Evocation, Dwarka and Evocation and Battle for Harmonic Balance/Halls of Amenti.

Primeval Transmissions (REMIXED & REMASTERED) feels like the true creative vision that Breath originally wanted to release but didn’t have the means to do so. This album benefits from much better production values and a clearer original vision for the album. The music can be quite slow-paced at first but there’s some spellbinding sounds to be discovered if you dig bands such as SLEEP, OM and YOB with a kick-ass sideline in Droned Out Distortion and Eastern Mysticism.

Primeval Transmissions (REMIXED & REMASTERED) is the definitive version to own for this great album. I’ve heard multiple formats of this album which all sound incredible but I would recommend downloading the WAV format. As that’s the best version I found the most enjoyment of. Everything has a more visceral edge within the higher audio bit-rate formats.

If this is your first time to the world of BREATH then this is the best release to immerse yourself with and see why these guys are worth getting genuinely excited about. Can’t wait to hear new music from the band and I’m hoping it’s equally as good as this.

Review

BREATH are a Drone/Doom Metal Duo who specialize in playing Meditative Doom Metal. This allows the band to play music that is more on the slow side of Drone/Doom Metal for their debut full length album - Primeval Transmissions. The band play a more reflective and spiritual style of Metal where the band play epic long slow notes that builds up at cool heavy rhythm.

Partially influenced by OM and SLEEP, there are deep similarities with BREATH and the music they create on this record. However, the Drone based quality of their sound allows BREATH to dictate their own creative visions with plenty of powerful Doom, Drone and Stoner Metal grooves a huge reliance of Psychedelic weirdness.

These guys are primarily a Drum and Bass duo. Though, that doesn’t mean there are no riffs. Far from it. You’ll be surprised by the high amount of addictive riffs on the album despite starting really slow.

The album contains 5 songs but it feels like one extended song split into individual chapters and it’s a good setup for this album. You experience many different sides to BREATH especially on the opening song - Evocation. BREATH play a simple style of down-tuned Drone based Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Metal with Sabbath levels of slow-paced heaviness. The chant-like vocals and deeply hallucogenic lyrics all play into the Meditative State Of Mind that BREATH plays with complete conviction.

Second song - Dwarka - carries on the slow-pounding and brooding style of bass-heavy Drone/Doom Metal which can be quite solitary in places and BREATH have a lot of time to play as the song runs for over 14 minutes. The song is one of the standout pieces on the album with BREATH playing a wide variety of different styles of music. The second half of the song is quite bleak in places with weird Psychedelic noises drifting between the vocals and BASS HEAVY RIFFAGE and highly intelligent drumming leading the way.

Third song - Observer - allows BREATH the opportunity to play a more conventional style of Doom/Stoner Metal song whilst offering that Meditative Doom experience the band have built this album around. The music and creative choices are less flamboyant but still an exciting mix of the different state of minds or grooves BREATH contain through their Progressive ideas and sounds. The band is joined by Portland Doom Metal Royalty - Rob Wrong (Witch Mountain) on guitars and he brings a more modern sound to this song with his impressive guitar solos being the best part of the song.

The final two songs Battle For Harmonic Balance / Halls Of Amenti and Evocation (reprise) sees BREATH carry on playing their wild and vivid style of Meditative Doom with splashes of Progressive Rock and Stoner Metal that wouldn’t go amiss from a YOB or Eagle Twin album whilst retaining their own style and identity. You are treated to 18 minutes of music that is less frantic than the other songs but still showcasing a great band playing to their creative strengths and leaving you wanting more. Though the last song is a slightly different version to the opening track but different to stand on its own convictions.

The production side of the album even has Rob Wrong pulling engineering, recording and mixed duties with the legendary Tad Doyle mastering the album. So even with the album sounding quite solitary, this is still a superbly made album which will give your mental wellbeing a much needed Meditative Doom Metal boost.

I absolutely adore this album and I was not disappointed. If you’re a fan of SLEEP, OM and YOB then BREATH is the perfect band for you to embrace and became a fan of. Primeval Transmissions is a thrilling, deeply spiritual and epic sounding album that should be an essential part of your record collection.
