Review

When We Cease To Understand The World is the latest chapter from Metal Experimental Collective Bear, Man Dangerous who I’ve featured on the blog a number of times now. If you’re new to their musical world then I’ll break it down for you what kind of music they actually play. Well, that’s very hard to describe as they crossover into areas of Psych, Punk, Stoner, Hardcore, Noise, Sludge, Americana and other weird elements into one fully cohesive style of music.

This track is one that’s built on Shoegaze, Psych, Post-Doom and Sludge Rock with an intense Noise Rock atmosphere. The music is very stripped back giving Bear, Man Dangerous and air of authenticity to their music especially when they talk about the current political landscape going on within the whole world. The music can be quite abstract and one that offers no answers at all. The added use of HARSH sound effects that’s spliced within the Ambient / Noise Rock structure make sure this track won’t be for everyone and is perhaps suited mostly for the Experimental Rock crowd.

For me personally, this is another excellent track from Bear, Man Dangerous and may perhaps offer as the perfect introduction to casual listeners into the band’s impressive discography.

Review:

American War is the new single by Psych/Post-Rock/Stoner Rock/Shoegaze Rockers Bear, Man Dangerous who impressed me last year with their excellent EP Unofficial Co-Worker. As the blend Americana, Post-Hardcore and Alternative to their main style of Psychedelic Stoner Rock sounds. The “Talking Heads/David Byrne” influences I noticed on their debut EP remain as direct influences once again but only briefly with Bear, Man Dangerous using subtle creative styles that remind me of artists such as EELS and The Mars Volta.

American War is a bleak and dystopian tale which is offset by superb sounding and highly melodic based Post-Rock driven Psych Stoner Rock grooves with Bear, Man Dangerous not afraid to show subtle hints of Melodic Pop but with a fresh Doomed Out twist. The lyrics are quite bold and can be controversial in places but it’s good to see Bear, Man Dangerous sticking so close to their political views and ideals. 

The music can be jangled and chaotic in places but Bear, Man Dangerous have a thrilling STONER based style of their own making which allows the band to play some freakish intense extended jams along the way.

American War is a damn good single and I’m looking forward to the next exciting chapter from Bear, Man Dangerous whenever that time arrives. This is music for the heart and soul which shows a different and vibrant style of Stoner Rock with an aggressive Post-Punk attitude.

Review

Unofficial Coworker is the new EP from Americana/Shoegaze/Stoner Rockers Bear, Man Dangerous. The band don’t really fall within those stated categories as there are elements of Post-Hardcore, Psych Rock and Alternative Rock to their overall sound. The EP has sublime elements of WEIRDO style rock with a thunderous sludgy groove.

The standout tracks are Bois Sauvage and Unofficial Coworker where the band have more time to fully develop their creative ideas on this EP though the opening track Tlӧn, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius does a grand job of showing what the band are capable of. If you dig bands such as Torche and Part Chimp then Bear, Man Dangerous have a warped melodic outlook to their music.

I’m wondering if there is a David Byrne or Talking Heads influence to the band especially where the vocals and lyrics are concerned. The EP shows fantastic traces of soaring and heavy Post-Rock sounds on Bois Sauvage. 

Unofficial Coworker is a stunning slice of Experimental Rock that could find a cult audience within the Stoner Rock underground scene.

What is the name of your band?

Bear, Man Dangerous

What is the genre of music that you play?

Not really any one genre. If you put some shoegaze, post-hardcore, space rock, noise rock, math rock, stoner rock and a pinch of slowcore & Americana into a blender and used what came out to make a sonic Jackson Pollok painting—that’s the best I can do.

Can you give a brief history of the band of how it came together and where it is today?

My other band, Rest as Mutes got shut down by COVID. Not making music made me a bit crazy. So I started to record songs in the back seat of my car in my apartment’s parking garage late into the night early morning. I was limited but songs just would not stop coming into my brain. Now I am able to go back to a studio and my Rest as Mutes band mates are helping me record a series of Bear, Man Dangerous EPs.

 

What can people expect from your music?

Most of the songs from BMD do not go where you have decided they are going. It’s like you black-out in New Mexico on a Summer night and come to, in February at a bar in Montreal.

What is the best release that folks should check out from your band?

The newest release, Unofficial co-work is a true representation of what Bear, Man Dangerous is as drums, bass and guitars were recorded in a studio and were able to be loud.
