Review

The debut album from MAJOR is a journey into the areas of Psychedelic Stoner Rock with heavy sounds building up from the areas of Fuzz Rock, Punk Rock and Desert Rock but there’s also a subtle Doom-Pop atmosphere emerging that feels inspired by the likes of TORCHE and ORBITER in places. The record is mostly dominated by a classic Stoner Rock vibe but MAJOR creates delicate POPPY attitudes that could have easily arrived from the Florida underground scene.

MAJOR demonstrates some COMMERCIAL and STADIUM ROCK grooves throughout the whole album which is shown very early on tracks such as: Time Warp, Venus and Black Madonna. With screeching guitars adding a dense level of heaviness with the Punk Rock/Alt Rock vocals adding a sense of pure ROCK & ROLL rebellion into the mix. The lyrics are superbly written with a certain Nineties Alternative attitude which allows MAJOR to offer a stripped back style of melodies thanks to the superbly handled production values the record contains throughout.

THe TORCHE influence becomes more apparent as time passes by but also sounds from the likes of KYUSS and FU MANCHU within the grizzled Desert/Stoner Rock landscapes contained on the later stages of the record. The album has a superb FEEL GOOD FACTOR with the right level of seediness appearing on the following tracks: Prayer To The Sun, Final Call, Broken Sky, Graveyard and Golden Cage.

MAJOR’s debut album delivers on all levels and If you want a record that captures the early sound of TORCHE  but with KYUSS and FU MANCHU based Desert Rock melodies then you can’t go wrong with this action packed record that delivers on all fronts.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Superseed second album Tremor builds upon the glorious melodies and rhythms they captured on their acclaimed 2019 debut album with the band playing an exhilarating style of Grunge, Alt Rock, Hard Rock and Stoner Rock. This time round the band have aligned themselves further into the Stoner Rock atmosphere with a great collection of tracks to back up their immense talent with.

Taking influences from the likes of Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Black Sabbath and QOTSA. There’s some spicy Desert Rock vibes which draw the likes of KYUSS and FU MANCHU into the mix. With an assortment of gloriously hip POP and PUNK ROCK sounds being added along the way then Superseed aren’t your typical Hard Rock/Stoner Rock combo. The band mostly develops a subtle 1990’s Alt Rock energy with the first batch of tracks Stand Your Ground, Ball & Chain and Big Mistake.

The vocals from David Edgar and Ben Taylor compliment each other very well with a huge Dave Grohl influence being heard throughout. The band still develop their Doom/Stoner Rock sound at the right opportunity which gives Tremor an extra level of warped heaviness. There’s something for everyone to enjoy here if they’re dedicated followers of the ROCK and METAL scenes. Superseed fully comes alive when they play fast-paced grooves that come at you from every direction possible.

This is the type of album that FOO FIGHTERS would be proud to call their own as it’s superbly entertaining throughout and full of songs that would go down a storm on mainstream radio especially Big Mistake, Tremor, Wave, Give Me Something and Mage Rager. The second half of the album is perhaps where the heaviest, catchiest and thrilling grooves appear though the first half is still a wicked slice of pure STONER ROCK heaven.

The production values are exquisite with Superseed firing on all cylinders for an album that allows them to play music at a breakneck speed. If you want a Stoner Rock album that’s not afraid to LOUD, BOISTEROUS, AGGRESSIVE and shower you in some killer commercial rock sounds whilst still being part of the HEAVY UNDERGROUND scene then Tremor is that album.

Tremor is first rate entertainment from start to finish. Check this out when you can.

Review

Toil & Trouble is the sophomore album from Psych/Sludge/Stoner Rockers Warchief who bring a cold hearted Grunge attitude to the album but also massive amounts of warmth Psychedelic and Sonic trippy endeavours along the way. The sound is always progressive and deeply engaging with Warchief always striving to find the right balance between Grunge, Shoegaze and Alt Metal melodies which they capture superbly well very early on in the album on tracks such as Ghost Egg and Toil & Trouble.

The record moves between King Buffalo and ELDER based Post-Stoner heaviness and the Grunge vibes of Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. The end result is a heavy explosion of distorted Post-Whatever instrumental passages with Warchief creating long drawn out progressive sounds which becomes quite experimental at times but never at the cost of the listener enjoying the whole album.

There’s a highly emotional side to Warchief’s music which comes across mostly within Toil & Trouble with Warchief playing a subdued Post-Rock and Doomgaze based sound. The sound is quite remote and held back at times with Warchief playing intricate strands of Prog Rock and Sludge Rock. There’s an undercurrent of Blues Rock melodies starting to appear with the music becoming superbly heavier with each passing moment. Add levels of ambient music in the background and Warchief are building up for an absolutely barnstorming finish on the second half of the track which taps right into the modern day Stoner Rock/Metal mindset.

Third track opts for an Alt Rock score with small amounts of Post-Rock and Post-Stoner attitude shining through. The mood is kind, engaging and warm-hearted with Warchief building up a steady rhythm of sludgy environments to build the heavier and aggressive sounds that appear later on with the record. Warchief are perhaps channelling the likes of PELICAN and YAWNING MAN on this track but it works superbly well. Though, wait for the second half of the song which transforms into a Progressive Rock/Metal number with a heavy backdrop of sludgier movements. The vocals are abrasive and quite pissed off at times which shows another different side to Warchief.

The fourth track Maailmankaikkeus On Pikimusta Ja Täynnä Suuria Vaarallisia Tähtiä (which Google translates as The Universe Is Pitch Black and Full of Large Dangerous Stars  - apologies to the band or any Finnish folks reading. Google Translate is shit at the best of times) - is a subdued Post-Doom / Post-Rock instrumental journey with harsh levels of Sludge Rock terrain spliced throughout the deft and ice-cold Psych Rock passages. This is quite a haunting and surprisingly uplifting sound that sees Warchief put their “Post-Rock” creative identity to great use.

The final two tracks of I Can’t Sleep At Night and Mothmaker sees Warchief explore their hybrid sound of Sludge, Stoner, Grunge, Psych and Doom held together by top-notch Prog Rock trickery. The creative themes that Warchief uses here are superbly played throughout with the band playing some epic musical solos along the way. They demonstrate some intense levels of Psych, Ambient and Cosmic interplay here which allows the record to end in spectacular and dramatic fashion.

Toil & Trouble is quite a soulful and beautifully heavy release which Warchief should ultimately be proud of. Within time, this record could allow Warchief to become more well known and established within the Sludge/Stoner Rock community. As it’s a must have album in every sense of the definition.

CTRL+Z: Psychedelic Stoner Metal from Poland with debut single ‘Cockroach’ announces first album via Interstellar Smoke Records

CTRL+Z plays psychedelic stoner rock that grows not from the Californian sands, but from the pavements of the polish city of Łódź – post-industrial greyness, chaos and city dust instead of a desert scenery. Their roots lie in jam sessions – psychedelic improvisations that give rise to the first sketches of songs. Compositions are shaped intuitively before they go to the studio for mixing and mastering.

‘Cockroach’ is the first single from CTRL+Z, announcing their debut album “We Are Social Creatures”, which will be released in September 25th 2025. via Interstellar Smoke Records.

‘Cockroach’ is a disturbing portrait of an urban outsider – a figure born in the city yards of Łódź, among the collapsing buildings and eternal twilight. This is a creature with a fat forehead, a wandering gaze and sudden, thoughtless movements, whose daily life is a constant, chaotic flight. In the final run, he loses his flight pigeon feathers.

Noise/Post-Punk/Sludge Rockers Torpedo share video from upcoming album What the f#*ked do we all do now? | Lights, US West Coast tour starts 7/10

Lausanne, Switzerland trio Torpedo share the official video for "SOME WOLVES" from their forthcoming sophomore album, What the fucked do we all do now? | Lights, today below

Hear and share the first single "NOW" at Bandcamp HERE. The album release coincides with the band's return to the US for West Coast dates throughout July. Please see complete dates below.

Torpedo is a noise rock, post-proto punk, industrial, and psychedelic trio which give itself over to creating a contrasting and unleashed music, seeking the perfect mixture that will metamorphose the leaden world into light and sulfurous gold. A slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the walls and a skid on gravel, riding a shredded bike at full speed. Can you feel your knees.

The story began in 2016 with a psychedelic and alternative post-punk duo. Carro Loubère (the howling lyre scratchers) and Jay Liseron (the bass screed and diabolic rhythmics worker and scraper) have fun weaving songs like webs around the stars and planets twinkling above the undulating sea. A beautiful trip with drum machines.

The first Hammer arrived in 2017, followed by a recording session on the European fringes of stormy Ireland, buffeted by winds and washed by ocean waves, one February of 2018. The first LP, Sphynx, was released in 2019. A post-punk and grunge album floating on harsh vocals and raw guitars, around which the bass dances, accompanied by tireless and heady drums. It was at this time, just before the album's release, that the second kicker arrived: Drew Hammer! This was followed by the recording of a new album entitled Orpheo_ Nebula in 2020. The tracks were recorded live in their rehearsal space (not much choice at that time...), the band then worked extensively in the studio to create a form of devastated opera made of layers, collages, and experiments around six poems with sprawling references spanning the ages.

Released in 2022, Orpheo_ Nebula received a warm reception from the media, and the band completed two tours on the American West Coast. In addition, two singles were released in the meantime, HOPE | DREAM in 2023 and La Mer Ondulée in 2024 - a 4-minutes excerpt from a much longer, yet unreleased jam...

Soon, the band is about to release a gut wrenching third album: What the Fucked Do We All Do Now? | - Lights, projecting us beyond the show, into the rawness of real life, that of you and me in our kitchens, weeping over a human world that has become unbearable for all the Living. Toward the essential questioning we all have under our nose.

What the fucked do we all do now? | Lights will be available exclusively on vinyl LP on June 27th, 2025 and hits streaming services in December via Broken Clover Records. Pre-orders are available HERE.

Stoner Rockers Portland's BELONGING Announce The Vinyl Re-Release Of Their Debut Album HOLLOW CELLS

Following up the release of their debut LP, Portland-based post-hardcore trio from the Upper Midwest channels grunge, doom, and psychedelic rock into a haunting re-release via Dipterid Records.

What began in isolation has returned with force. Belonging, a genre-defiant trio with roots in North Dakota and Minnesota, is reissuing their debut album ‘Hollow Cells’ through Portland-based imprint Dipterid Records. Originally self-released, the album is now being offered a proper platform to a hidden gem waiting to be unearthed by a broader audience attuned to its raw emotional depth.

The band—Bryce August (guitar/vocals), Jeremy Hansen (bass), and Shane Heilman (drums)—formed out of the tight-knit DIY scenes of the Upper Midwest, later converging with the heavier and more experimental currents of the Pacific Northwest. The result is a massive, emotionally complex sound, blending the raw urgency of punk and screamo with the heavy, hypnotic energy of sludge, psych, and grunge.

“Hollow Cells was the culmination of a lot of different influences,” says guitarist and vocalist Bryce August. “We wrote and recorded a lot of these songs during the Covid quarantine — so there's a sense of alienation, isolation, creeping dread… and a desire to cut silence with noise.”

The record’s thick atmosphere of disquiet is met with a visceral, melodic pushback. Fuzzed-out guitars groan and bloom. Basslines writhe under crashing drums. Each track captures the tension of breaking free — of finding belonging in dissonance.

The band draws on the Midwest’s punk/hardcore pedigree as much as the doom-laden legacy of Pacific Northwest icons. “Initially we fused my punk and screamo roots with Jeremy's experience in Portland noise rock bands and Shane’s post-metal drumming,” Bryce continues. “As we refined the songs, we took a lot of influence from PNW bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Melvins, alongside the more psychedelic elements of bands like Lungfish and Black Angels.” That background of evolving influences carries weight, not just in tone, but in atmosphere—textured, heavy, and deeply rooted in emotional contrast. As Bryce concludes, “All of that together surfaces as the heavy, hypnotic energy of stoner/doom that flavors our particular take on post-hardcore.”

The reissue comes courtesy of Dipterid Records, a label devoted to underground sonic oddities. Founder Kevin Curty recalls: “I discovered Belonging through a mutual friend of Jeremy's. When I heard ‘Hollow Cells’ I was honestly shocked it hadn’t already been picked up. It was love at first listen.”‘Hollow Cells’ from Belonging is coming out on via Dipterid Records.

Psych Rockers Filthy Hippies Unveil Video for ‘Miserable’ — A Gritty Glimpse Into the Psychedelic Soul of South African Shoegaze

Cape Town’s favourite alternative psych-shoegaze collective, Filthy Hippies, have released the music video for their track Miserable, taken from their recently launched album, A Colourful Trip Through Melancholy out now on Mongrel Records.

Since emerging onto the South African music scene in 2018, Filthy Hippies have carved out a distinct sonic identity—meshing swirling shoegaze textures with gritty psychedelic undertones. Their work has earned them a dedicated following, cementing their place among the most compelling acts in the country’s thriving underground. From spellbinding live sets to festival appearances, including a memorable performance at the 2019 Endless Daze Festival, Filthy Hippies continue to push boundaries with every release.

The band also welcomes a refreshed and expanded line-up for this new era. Joining Andrew Paine (Vocals/Bass/Guitar), Mandy Backström (Bass/Vocals), and Tim Ball (Guitar) are Jan-Hendrik Van Wyk (Guitar) and Divan Swanepoel (Drums). This dynamic five-piece brings renewed energy and textural richness to both the band’s studio recordings and live performances, allowing the group to dive deeper into the sonic landscapes they’ve become known for.

The video for “Miserable” is a layered visual journey—raw, dreamlike, and reflective. It captures the emotional paradox at the heart of the track. “We tried to contrast the melancholic vibe of Miserable with a cheerfully sung chorus, that hints at the possibility that the protagonist is happy being unhappy,” says vocalist Andrew Paine. That contrast is brought vividly to life in the video, pairing distorted performance visuals with surreal, analogue textures.

“Miserable” encapsulates the spirit of A Colourful Trip Through Melancholy—an album that drifts through emotion, memory, and existential haze, yet remains grounded in the grungey grit of real experience. It’s an ode to introspection, a sonic pilgrimage wrapped in fuzz and feeling.

Fans of My Bloody Valentine, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, or South Africa’s own Dangerfields will find themselves right at home in the Filthy Hippies’ immersive soundscapes.

An Interview With Doom/Stoner Metallers MIDNIGHT WHISKEY MASSACRE

Doom/Stoner Metallers Midnight Whiskey Massacre debut EP - Satan’s Grin - is a weird concoction of Doom, Sludge, Stoner, Grunge, Post-Punk and Psych Rock. This is a great record that showcases the arrival of a great band especially with the excellent spiky vocals Darren Ironside reminding me of Shane McGowan and Mark E Smith at times.

I wanted to find out more about this cool band and I’m happy to report that Darren Ironside (Guitars/Vocals) kindly agreed to this interview.

Hi Darren. Thanks for doing this interview. How are things with you today?

Hi Steve, no problem, thank you for your time. All good here!

For folks not in the know can you give a brief history of how the band came together and where it is today?

I first started writing the songs that would end up on the debut material, ‘Overwatch and Control’ in 2022, out of the observations of a lot of people’s frustration and anger, of the after effects of covid and the implemented government policies and law changes since then, that worked negatively against the population.

So I guess that first inspired me to write the songs and continue to progress it to where it is today. Me and the bassist, Sam, are looking for a regular drummer and rhythm guitarist to get out playing live shows. Until then work has started to begin on new material.

How do you describe your own sound?

I guess you would say it’s a raw mix of heavy rock, proto-metal and doomy, sludgy, stoner rock, with southern rock vibes and doom metal grooves, delivered with a punk kind of sound or twist.

We're here to discuss your new EP - Satan's Grin. Great EP and quite an unusual sound but in a good way. What can people expect to hear from this EP?

Big, raw and doomy/sludgy metal and heavy rock riffs with a difference, if you love your heavy rock and metal songs with quite a unique sound, I think there is something here for everyone to enjoy as it has a lot of different musical styles and genres incorporated into it, ranging from blues, metal, heavy rock, doom, post punk and stoner rock.

One fan described the song ‘Rocking chair’ as a bit like, if Iggy Pop wrote a metal song!

This is a quite an highly unusual EP with elements of Stoner, Doom, Post-Punk and Southern Rock. Was that your plan to create something different to your previous EPs?

No, not really, it’s just how it came out with the influences of the genres I enjoy listening to, I think.

Where did the name for the band come from and where did the name for the EP came from as well?

I came up with the name some time ago, that I wanted to use if I ever got this project going and some people have said listening to this music makes them feel slightly drunk! So it seems to kind of make sense and fits the style of the music.

What bands and EPs influenced you when recording this EP?

To be honest there wasn’t any particular band or ep that influenced the recording or mindset, in terms of wanting to sound like anyone else. It was recorded straight through mic’d amps with fairly traditional methods and without too much studio trickery and the like, so it was kept quite raw sounding.

The post punk sound on some of the songs on the EP, like Rocking chair and Satan’s grin probably come from the influences and tastes of the raw sounds, of bands that I was into and loved back in the day, like Nirvana, Therapy etc and then later, heavier, more groove based doom and sludge bands, like EyeHateGod, Corrosion of Conformity, The Obsessed.

I was always into stuff with a raw, honest edge and a big sound, so I guess it came from that.

What formats is the EP being released on?

For now it is just available on digital format

You`re releasing the EP by yourself. Is that a hard thing to do in today's musical scene?

Well it’s probably easier now than ever before, for artists for to record and do all or most of the work themselves, but if you don’t have that ability to do so and you want to go into a studio and need to get it done there, obviously that has to be funded and isn’t always easy to do in today’s financial climate.

What is the creative process or setup within the band? Do you write the music together or do certain people within the band do that?

I write the music and songs from home myself so far and then we pretty much go from there.

Who designed the excellent EP cover. Really brings to light what the whole EP is about.

That would be Harry Awongo via Instagram and yes there is kind of a message in there and the songs, with the world's current financial landscape and political climate being what it is, have certainly made these times very interesting for us all to be living in.

What is the current state of your local Rock/Metal scene? Do you perform gigs on a regular basis and do you have a local scene that you are actively involved with?

Locally it’s not that great, there are a few good bands within the genre, but not many venues that you can go to, that play original heavy music in Hertfordshire, unless you go to London or another big city where you can see the more well known bands on tour, or that play our sort of music within this scene.

Will you be performing any gigs to promote this EP locally or further afield?

We certainly hope to, we just need to find a regular drummer and rhythm guitarist who wants to join us on this journey.

Words of wisdom for fans?

We really hope you can enjoy the EP and try and help support all artists by buying their music and merch wherever possible and continuing to support bands and venues, to keep live music and bands alive and kicking. Without you all and all of that, it wouldn’t be possible!

Rock on!

Inspired by 90's Rock - Grunge/Alt Rockers Mad Sneaks releases new single "Biocide"

Inspired by 90's rock Mad Sneaks releases new single "Biocide" - The trio has previously worked with producers Jack Endino and Toby Wright, who helped shape the sound of Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains.

Mad Sneaks, formed by Agno Dissan, Amaury Johns and Phill Andreas, continues to consolidate its sound identity inspired by 90s rock. With a visceral energy and influences that range from grunge, stoner and alternative rock, the band has been building a remarkable trajectory in the underground scene.

The trio has worked with Jack Endino and Toby Wright, legendary producers who helped shape the sound of bands such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Korn and Slayer. In addition, Mad Sneaks also had a special guest appearance by Page Hamilton (Helmet) on one of its tracks, reinforcing its connection with iconic names in world rock. On stage, the band has performed at festivals such as PMW (Palmas), Goiânia Noise and even opened for Red Fang in São Paulo.

Now, Mad Sneaks is starting 2025 with a series of releases, starting with the single "Biocide", a track that perfectly captures the essence of the group. The song was born from a spontaneous process: "I was practicing the guitar, testing some fingerings, and this intro came to me by accident. From there, everything developed naturally and in a fun way. Since we like a noisy sound, the second part of the song instinctively took a faster and heavier path. This contrast creates a very interesting sound experience for the listener", says the band.

Interestingly, "Biocide" was originally written to be the last track on the album, but the band's singles release strategy allowed them to bring forward the song, one of their favorites to play live. "We're looking forward to releasing it soon and for the audience to connect with it even more at the shows," the band members say.

The cover art for "Biocide" also has a curious story. The central image is a lizard photographed by Agno Dissan over 15 years ago. "It had been dead and dry for a long time, but its position created an optical illusion, as if it were smiling. The contrast of the image goes very well with the theme of the song, so we decided to combine both pieces of art," he explains. The final montage was done by Amaury Johns, who is responsible for most of the band's covers.

6.Moksha 03:24

7.Getting Alone 03:42

Review

There Is Silence Between The Words is the new album from Czech Stoner Rockers Billy Rudin who released their debut album back in August 2024. This time round Billy Rudin has a greater understanding of their Stoner Rock sound by exploring areas of Post-Punk, Post-Rock and Grunge aesthetics which transforms into some mighty Doomed Out grooves. The music is a bit more intense and progressive with a sudden shift to Space Rock dynamics with a slightly darker take on the Post-Stoner vibe that’s becoming quite popular within the modern day scene.

The album lasts around twenty eight minutes with Billy Rudin not wasting a single second and delivering a soulful style of music that resonates with fans of 1990’s Grunge, Doom and Stoner Metal though with slight detours to Post-Punk and Shoegaze movements. Vocals drift in and out when firmly needed especially on the exquisite standout second track 3x L1e where the Space Rock melodies become fused with Prog Rock rhythms and heavy Sludge Rock dynamics.

Third track Hollow Promise Of The Eternal Love is another superbly written track with Billy Rudin focusing upon a classic Post-Grunge theme then adding strands of Trippy Psychedelics and what I feel is almost a Trip-Hop vibe before the aggressive sludgy guitars dictate the whole delivery of the song. There’s a subtle Middle Eastern flavour starting to emerge which adds a level of Post-Rock confusion to the mix which allows Billy Rudin to experiment with different sounding instrumental ideas.

Fourth track In The Silence Of My Soul is a pitch perfect balance of Grunge, Post-Doom and Post-Punk creative ideas at play where a sullen Space Rock vibe appears out of nowhere and brings a haunting Desert Rock energy that has echoes of Yawning Man at times before a more destructive style of music appears. Ambient textures and grizzled Indie guitars have vibes of The Smiths appearing within the lyrics and claustrophobic guitars. Whilst I’m not a fan of The Smiths or that style of music, Billy Rudin expertly delivers their own great style of music that could easily be classed as GOTHIC ROCK in places.

The final three tracks of Something From The Universe, Moksha and Getting Alone journeys even further into 1990’s Indie, Rock and Alternative territory whilst still maintaining that core Stoner Rock vibe heard on the earlier stages of the album. Something From The Universe and Getting Alone contains some of the riffiest and aggressive parts of the album.

There Is Silence Between The Words is a brilliantly clever and superbly deceptive record where Billy Rudin explores many different areas of music that you don’t expect to work. However, Billy Rudin give have created a highly atmospheric sound where they create a great style of Post-Stoner music of their own making.
