Review

Doomgaze/Stoner Metallers Prophets Of Thwaites return with their crushing new EP Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat which offers two tracks running around thirteen minutes in length. This EP sees the band offer a heavier style of Doom, Psych, and Atmospheric Rock with the band ready to embrace a different sound compared to their previous releases.

The sound is mighty thick with Esma Larabi’s guitars opening musical gateways into the psychedelic landscapes. There’s also a deft touch of nineties Alt Rock and Grunge surroundings starting to emerge within the excellent opening track of A Deadlock with small influences of Alice In Chains, Deftones and Soundgarden starting to form.

Prophets Of Thwaites don’t leave their earlier “Doomgaze” creative energy behind first heard on their previous records as they combine their early sound with a more aggressive and direct tone that transforms into some epic fast-paced instrumental grooves with a richer Stoner Rock/Metal attitude developing. The vocals from Esma are excellent as ever but it’s the music that impressed me the most with the band adding huge chunks of aggressive Hard Rock into the mix. The band have really stepped up their game since their last song Tharlab.

Imagine if WINDHAND decided to go full on Doom/Stoner Metal with shades of THE OBSESSED leading the way then this is the best possible result. Though, Prophets Of Thwaites keep with the “Post-Doom” and “Gothic” outlook with their creative outlook within the lyrics and the slight vibes of Atmospheric Rock that starts to drift into the standout final title track of Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat.

This is where Nico Beemster (Drums) and Ferry Vermeeren (Bass) take their chance to fully shine with a pulsating performance within the rhythm section. It’s quite understated at times where they allow Esma to provide an emotionally charged vocal performance. The music is beautifully intricate and highly volatile with Prophets Of Thwaites delicately moving between all the different musical elements they have at their disposal and construct a highly original style of Post-Doom, Shoegaze and Stoner Metal with real emotional intensity.

Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat is another masterful release from Prophets Of Thwaites who are really starting to make waves within the underground Doom/Stoner Metal scene. Their next record can’t come soon enough as I’m really excited to hear what the band come up with next.

Whoever thought that famed Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metallers Clouds Taste Satanic would release an EP full of Christmas Covers but all done with a sinister and wicked Doomedelic twist. Well, here we are with All I Want For Christmas Is Your Soul with Clouds Taste Satanic performing their own twisted versions of festive classic hits such as All I Want For Christmas Is You, You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch and Little Drummer Boy. Though the main surprise is playing a cover of the Spinal Tap classic Christmas With The Devil, well it wouldn’t be a festive Heavy Metal release without a true HEAVY METAL FESTIVE song.

Clouds Taste Satanic bring their instrumental magic with their fantastic demented style of Doom/Stoner Metal Riff wizardry which works amazingly well on All I Want For Christmas Is You and Little Drummer Boy. You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch is a cool Post-Doom/Stoner Metal offering with a subtle Sludge Rock groove appearing within the more memorable heavier moments of the track. Jeez, Clouds Taste Satanic even add a Thrash Metal sound to certain parts of the track with a classic 80’s Heavy Metal appetite which makes up for some of the most interesting parts of the whole EP.

Christmas With The Devil is where Clouds Taste Satanic can be their most outlandish and sinister best with a classic Proto-Metal, Psych Rock and Proto-Doom sound appearing with moments of pure RAWK & ROLL excess which exhibits proper 1970’s outlandish guitar riffs that showcases once again why Clouds Taste Satanic are one of the most definitive Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metal bands currently playing within the underground scene.

All I Want For Christmas Is Your Soul is the one and only true Christmas release you need this year. This is an EP that does something wholly original with the actual source material and makes you want to hear more from Clouds Taste Satanic playing festive classics. And I’m a fully paid up member of the “BAH HUMBUG” crew.

Review

Echo Hall is the debut EP from Psych Doom/Stoner Rockers The Skyspeakers and the band arei influenced by bands such as Ruby Hatchet, Uncle Acid and Blackwater Holylight. So the EP contains a retro and gloomy style of Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Rock with the vocals being more Folk/Americana based. This isn’t the type of music I usually go for right away and this did take a few listens to fully appreciate. 

Opening song Learn To Feel is a slow-paced Folk Rock/Americana number with strands of 60s/70s Occult Rock with echoes of Post-Rock amongst the weird Psychedelic grooves. There’s some heavy guitar sounds on the later stages of the song and the haunting dual vocals from Chris and Jessie elevate the song to a stronger creative peak. This track is very melodic and fits in superbly well with the Prog Rock and Gloomy rhythms that remains one of the strongest aspects of The Skyspeakers in general.

Second song The Ghost House is the standout track and the band turn over many different levels of gloomy atmospheric rock. The song runs past the eight minutes mark and The Skyspeakers play cautiously slowly yet again but they play an exciting blend of Post-Rock and Americana sounds that does remind me of Blackwater Holylight. The lyrics have a slight GOTHIC twinge and Alternative flow that moves into heavier areas of distorted DOOM. Hell, the band even add elements of Jazz and Funk to the party and I never expected that at all. 

The other two songs Guardian Of The Grave and Hollow Bones move further into the gloomy rock arena with perhaps more experimentation for a richer and fuller sound especially on Guardian Of The Grave.

Echo Hall can be a hard record to like at first but it’s got HEART and SOUL that does leave you wanting to hear more. The production is clear and solid that allows The Skyspeakers to play their music in a highly confident way. 

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Chapel Floods debut EP is almost thirteen minutes of Modern Day Heavy Psych Stoner/Sludge Metal grooves. The vocals are raw and real with no studio polish behind them. What you hear is what you get with an EP that’s quite Melodic and not as aggressive you might think. That’s not to say this EP isn’t heavy as it’s superbly subtle with the heavy riffs heard throughout the three excellent tracks that make up this release.

There is an Alternative Metal and perhaps Grunge feel to Chapel Floods sound as well especially on the opening song Time Servers. It’s quite slow-paced with a cool “LOW & SLOW” approach with the band sticking firmly to their DIY roots. 

The band are more confident on the final two songs of Thousand Year Stare and Crooked Noose. Chapel Floods play seedier and faster paced grooves with that Grungy attitude appearing again. The production is way better compared to the first song.

I would like to hear more from Chapel Floods in the future. There’s a lot to recommend here if you dig your Sludge/Stoner Metal on the more Psychedelic and Grunge side of life. Add some cool Alternative Rock/Metal touches and this EP gets the job done of letting you know who Chapel Floods actually are.

Review

This tasty split release comes from two Pennsylvania bands called L.M.I. and Vulturepeak. Both bands play a different style of Hardcore Punk/Metal to each other. L.M.I. play a more Hardcore/Stoner Metal variety with Vulturepeak playing a harsher and Blackened Style of music. 

This release allows both bands to offer a fast-paced style of music that is very raw-sounding and fits firmly with the aesthetics of Hardcore Punk.

L.M.I. have been featured on this blog before and they’ve moved away from their earlier Stoner Rock sound for a more brutal style of Sludge/Doom Metal. The songs they offer are aggressive and quite catchy in places and have a “Kvelertak” appeal to them especially on songs such as: Deconstruct, Forcing The Tone and Never Absolute.

Vulturepeak are a new band for myself and they surprised me with their bleak style of world-weary lyrics and even harsher grooves to match. The first two songs are your standard Hardcore/Blackened Sludge fare with the band playing a pissed-off and no-holds barred style of music. Though, the final two songs of their split Glide & Swarm and Life Gathers impressed me more.

As the songs are long and Vulturepeak have more time to play with and offer a more “Post-Metallic” vibe. The overall feel of the songs are way more engaging with pummelling Sludge grooves leaving myself wanting more.

This is a solid and well-produced release that gets the job done in highlighting two fantastic bands to Pennsylvania Hardcore Punk/Metal scene.

Y'all Motherfuckers Forgot 'Bout Good Ol' Son of a Bitchin' Blues is the new EP from Polish Doom/Stoner Rockers – Weird Tales – and the guys are paying homage to the Godfathers of Blues Music with their own interpretation of songs by Lonnie Johnson, Skip James, Blind WIllie Johnson and Muddy Waters.

Blues Music played an important part for the evolution of Rock Music and within the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Meal scene. Weird Tales are paying respects to these legendary musicians with their own take on some of their most well known songs. The thing is with this EP everything is open to interpretation and Weird Tales create a more filthier, heavier and DOOMIER style of covers you would initially expect.

Some fans of these songs will recognise some parts and not recognise others but it’s good to see a band like Weird Tales trying something different on each of the 4 snogs chosen here. The EP definitely still remains in the BLUES ROCK department but weighed down by a Doom/Stoner Metal backdrop of heavy grooves and aggressive vocals.

The opening song Got The Blues For Murder Only and Hard Time Killin’ Floor Blues are my favourite parts of the EP. The songs are played for LOUD and VIOLENT KICKS with the twisted guitars leading the BLUES ROCK charge to fast-paced fashion within the opening song.

Hard Time Killin’ Floor Blues is quite slow-paced at first before Weird Tales bring a spectacular blend of Blues Rock, Doom and Stoner Metal but topped off with a manic Sludgy groove that elevates everything to a heavier volume of noise. The guitars are down-tuned in places and some notes have a DRONE based quality to them.

“Too Fucking Cold, Too Fucking Dark” and “Take Sick And Die” are good covers but lack the creative spark the opening two tracks have but Weird Tales put everything into this release and none so more on these two track with epic riffs that could easily pass off Weird Tales very own if you’ve haven’t heard these songs before.

Y'all Motherfuckers Forgot 'Bout Good Ol' Son of a Bitchin' Blues is a frantic and hugely entertaining release and one that takes the right creative chances to standout from the recent run of Covers based records that have been released recently.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

ENNOEA are back with their new EP – Pistis Sophia – and it’s their first proper release in 5 years . Two of the songs Sufficiency and Unworthy were released earlier this year which I reviewed here. This time round the songs are have been joined by two other songs that make up the Pistis Sophia EP.

The EP is a mixture of ENNOEA familiar Drone/Doom/Stoner Metal grooves that has elements of Post-Black Metal tendencies with Samantha’s harsh death growls leaving a threatening presence throughout. The lyrics are quite bleak and what you should expect for an EP such as this.

ENNOEA have never been afraid to explore the more extreme side of Doom/Stoner Metal and Pistis Sophia allows Samantha to create a more horrifying sound that you wouldn’t expect to hear in Stoner Metal. The ambient sounds heard on the excellent opening song – Birth of a Blind God (Demiurgos Part III) – leave little to the imagination with the constant shift in tone and delivery from start to finish.

The next two songs Sufficiency and Unworthy sees Samantha experiment with her overall sound as the song adds heavier moments of of pitch black Doom/Post-Black Metal sound with traces of Psychedelic Doom and Death Metal starting to appear.

The final song - The Blue Mold (Tom O'Bedlam) - is where the main action is at with ENNOEA playing a more progressive style of Post-Black Metal that is gloomy and claustrophobic from start to finish. This is perhaps some of the best music that Samantha has created to date. As it’s an interesting style of music and can be quite challenging to listen to at times.

Overall, ENNOEA have released another winning record to their already impressive discography. I’m hoping Samantha doesn’t leave it another 5 years to darken our doorsteps with ENNOEA. As I feel there is unfinished business left to be dealt with ENNOEA…..

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Underground UK Sludge Metallers – Kurokuma – return with their latest EP – Dope Rider. This is a concept EP based on the legendary comic strip of the same name written by Paul Kirchner for High Times beginning in the 1970s.

I only know a little bit of both Dope Rider and Paul Kirchner. As one of my pals is a huge fan of Paul’s work and he provided me on the backstory of Dope Rider before writing this review. Though I’m only here to concentrate on the music. If you want to find out more about Dope Rider and Paul Kirchner then I suggest you head over to Paul Kirchner’s brilliantly entertaining blog here.

Anyway. Kurokuma have recently gained some major attention being part of the recently released documentary – The Doom Doc. As Joe Allen from the band is part of Holy Spider Promotions which is the major focus of the acclaimed documentary. So any new music from Kurokuma is only a good thing.

And they deliver the goods with this fucked up heavy sludge metal assault on the senses. The EP contains 2 songs and lasts for 13 minutes. Kurokuma create brutally heavy progressive Doom/Sludge Metal sounds. Maybe taking influence from CONAN but still creating their own distinctive style of music.

The vocals are brutally raw and real. This is perhaps Kurokuma’s most grittiest and most realised record to date. Its’ best to listen judge this EP as one epic song instead of two parts. The music is constantly bleak and Kurokuma try their hand at different things on Dope Rider.

The overall sound is perhaps one the best parts of the EP. Which isn’t surprising since Sam Thredder (Slabdragger) recorded the EP and Chris Fielding (CONAN) mixed and mastered the EP. So what you have here on Dope Rider is the one of the best upcoming UK Sludge Metal bands working with two of the most highly regarded UK Doom Metal musicians and the results are amazing.

Frayle are a Doom/Stoner Rock band with an Occult and Gloomy presence hidden within their music. The band say they take influence from Sleep, Black Sabbath, Portishead, Bjork and Kyuss. And truth be told that’s a pretty accurate description of how their debut EP – The White Witch – sounds like.

A collection of four songs that merge gloomy atmospherics with progressive Sludge/Desert/Stoner Rock passages. The vocals from Gwyn are perhaps one of the strongest aspects of the EP with the music coming a close second. As Gwyn is the main focus of this EP. The music is fantastic throughout as well. With Frayle even including a heavy Post-Metal feel on songs such as Let The Darkness and Things That Make Us Bleed.

Frayle include a cover of Portishead classic – Wandering Star – and they totally own this song. As the song is very different to the original. Perhaps more gloomy and more sombre than the original.

The future is bright for Frayle. Check this EP out before they move onto bigger and better things. As The White Witch is perhaps Frayle’s calling card to bigger and better things within the Doom/Stoner Metal community.

Greetings All,

Philadelphia’s Ecstatic Vision have given unto us a killer 6 song covers EP entitle Under the Influence that will send the listener hurling a wild trip back to the 70’s. Those familiar with Ecstatic Vision and their gritty, heavy take on garage psych will go bonkers over this EP. The record is half ZamRock covers and half 60’s/70’s psych rock covers. I won’t lie to you, I had no idea what ZamRock was until I started researching it for this record. ZamRock is a mostly psych rock sound that emanated from Zambia in the 1970’s.

The first three tracks on the record are from these ZamRock artists. The last 3 tracks are an homage to two of the early purveyors of psych rock, the MC5 and Hawkwind. This EP rips it up from beginning to end. I personally have always been a fan of the EP format, it leaves the listener wanting more, and Ecstatic Vision have nailed it here. The record is concise and rocking from the first to the final note.

The record has a very gritty, distorted almost lo-fi sound that truly suits all of the songs presented on Under the Influence. Ecstatic Vision sound is a mix of effects heavy psychedelic rock with 70’s rock crunch and from time to time some distorted saxophone that is a mighty tool and a killer piece of the puzzle.

Troublemaker by Chrissy Zebby Tembo kicks the record off with a heavy chug and some of the most gravel filled, distorted vocals around. This song, as with all on this EP, is heavy on the rhythm and guitar with plenty of spaced out distortion to spare.

The Bad Will Die by Keith Mlevhu is up next. This almost fully instrumental track is a guitar-centric spaced out trip back to the early 70’s.

History of Man follows. It is by Amanaz and is groovy and again is overloaded with fuzzed out, wah heavy guitars and a killer groove that is accentuated by some righteous vocals and lyrics.

Squalling feedback opens Born to Go by Hawkwind which fully embraces the 70’s psych sound with a killer beat and heavy, heavy usage of phasers and effects.

The band then grabs another Hawkwind track, Master of the Universe. This monster track is the perfect stage for the bands use of distorted saxophone to close out the song.

The album closes with Come Together by the MC5 (not the Beatles tune which would have been an interesting choice). In listening to this ripper of a closer, you can feel the admiration for the Detroit rock group coming through in the song. EV and the MC5 are kindred spirits.

Under the Influence is a righteous addition to Ecstatic Vision already stellar catalogue. If you haven’t checked out their first two records, do yourself a favor and grab them along with this ripper. You owe it to yourself to take a long strange trip to the 70’s with the Vision. Highly Recommended!

Sound Of Origin debut EP - Seeds Of The Past - is an apt title as the band are influenced by legendary Doom/Stoner Metal bands of the past with the band play a classic style of Doom/Stoner Metal. Taking influence from the more weedian style of riffs with the band offering a rawer sound.

Opening track - Warfarin - is a lengthy tale of heavy riffs and clean grizzled vocals which are held together by a raw doom/sludge based atmosphere. The lyrics are your usual stoner rock/metal fare but they do have a vibrant and playful energy to them. The song scores top marks in the volume department as this song is definitely heavy with the Weedeater style Sound being the main focal point.

Second track - Driven To Destruction - has a more distorted grunge feel with elements of violent fuzz being played in the background. This song has a classic nineties grunge/stoner hybrid sound. The vocals from lead vocalist John later become more settled and you can hear different styles and elements to his voice. This is another strong offering from Sound Of Origin and it shows that their sound is very hard to pin down, even at this point with three songs remaining.

Third track - Left For Dead - opens with an acoustic grunge based riff that has a slight Alice In Chains feel before the familiar Doom/Stoner Sound make a welcome return. The song has a more laid-back psychedelic approach but the lyrics and heavier ruffs push this song firmly into the doom/stoner metal arena. Shades of Kyuss riffs appear towards the end of the song as the song leaves you wanting more.

Fourth track - Seeds Of The Past - is a love letter to the classic days and roots of Stoner Metal and particularly Kyuss. As this song has even more familiar Kyuss based riffs but Sound Of Origin are clever enough to include heavier elements of their own music into the mix.

The final track - Asphalt - is a more subdued affair with reflective lyrics and vocals creating an eerie atmosphere. The song still remains undeniably heavy but in a more restrained way compared to the other songs on the record. Seeds Of The Past is a heavy psychedelic take on all things Doom, Grunge, Stoner, Fuzz and everything in between. The EP's production is handled superbly well. It's quite raw in places but I feel that's the intent from Sound Of Origin. Mainly to show they have a distinctive real sound that doesn't feel over-produced or compromised in anyway.

Seeds Of The Past has the potential to open doors for the band within the UK Hard Rock/Metal scene. They aren't the finished article yet but this EP shows a band with huge potential and a bright future as well.
