DRUIDESS announces UK tour with Morag Tong

Following their performances on the Sunday of this year's Masters of the Riff festival, two of the UK Doom Underground's standouts are going on tour together this October.

Morag Tong have been staples of the heavy music scene for a decade now, with their latest album released through Majestic Mountain Records. Drawing on a wealth of influences across the psych, sludge and doom landscapes with lyrical themes of existential wonder and the natural world.

Support for this run comes from fast-rising Newcastle Proto-metal quartet DRUIDESS, whose debut album 'Trip Meadow' has garnered strong reviews from the likes of Metal Hammer and Classic Rock.

Introducing Bear Bones: doom-infused blues featuring members of Elephant Tree, Limb, Swedish Death Candy, Black Moth and Morag Tong

Bear Bones was born from a whiskey-fueled jam session between Rob Hoey (Limb) and Pete Holland (Elephant Tree), riffing on old blues tunes deep into the night. When they stumbled upon Vanilla Fudge's 1967 debut album—packed with raw, soulful covers and a single original track—they found their blueprint. In true blues rock tradition, they set out to create something that felt just as authentic and unpolished.

The duo brought in heavy hitters from across the underground scene: Alex from Morag Tong, Marco from Swedish Death Candy, and Federica from Black Moth. As the sessions heated up at Bear Bites Horse Studios with the legendary Wayne Adams behind the board, more friends jumped in for the ride. Scott from Green Lung, Susie from Brume, and Jack from Stubb all laid down killer grooves, adding to the album's gritty, old-school vibe.

With Wayne capturing the raw energy of the room, the result was pure magic—a true jam session that oozes vintage blues rock soul. No gimmicks, no gloss. Just pure, unfiltered sound straight from the gut.

Bear Bones is a doom-infused blues supergroup rising from the underground, featuring members of Elephant Tree, Limb, Swedish Death Candy, Black Moth and Morag Tong. Steeped in the raw soul of the blues and the crushing weight of doom, their sound is both haunting and hypnotic—where fuzz-drenched riffs meet smoky, melancholic grooves. With guest appearances from members of Green Lung, Stubb, Brume, and more, Bear Bones is set to shake the foundations of heavy music. With a new album on the horizon, this is just the beginning. Review:

Post-Metal/Sludge/Doom/Stoner Riff Merchants Morag Tong released their debut album Last Knell Of Om way back in May 2018 and it’s an album that made a mighty impression within the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal community. Mostly down it’s fantastic style of Ambient Post Rock fused with Doom, Sludge and Stoner based sounds that had a thrilling fantastical Psychedelic element to them that allowed the band to create their own unique and haunting style of music.

Well Morag Tong are back with Grieve and it seems the band have undergone a major transformation with their music. As Morag Tong have decided to focus upon playing a more Post-Doom and Progressive sound that you would associate with YOB and Pallbearer. There’s still a certain Stoner element to their music but mostly Grieve sees Morag Tong to play mostly to their Post-Doom and Post-Metal creative strengths with a muscular Psychedelic Sludge attitude drifting into darker areas than you initially realise.

Opening song At First Light has a slight resemblance to what you heard within their last record though that mood changes when the Post-Rock flow transforms into a heavier and free-flowing style of Ambient Post-Metal with a gloomy heaviness that allows the band to play the heaviest sounds of their career. Perhaps best described as PURE CINEMATIC and BONE CRUNCHING AMBIENT DOOM especially when the Harsh vocals appear. There’s a more violent and sinister Post-Stoner element at play which morphs into some epic extended instrumental sounds towards the later stages of the track.

Second song Passages offers a more daring and extreme style of music from Morag Tong which has a destructive and nihilistic sound that draws comparisons to EYEHEATEGOD and early-era Electric Wizard but with the Psychedelic Sludge Metal flavour allowing Morag Tong to play familiar sounds from a distance. The song is quite cold and calculated within the heavier moments but offers moments of brief hopeful respite when the music changes into a more restrained and mellower style of Sludge Rock fused with Ambient Sounds and Post-Stoner scorched desert riffs.

Third song A Stem’s Embrace opens with a simple but beautifully played melody that ranks up there with the best Post-Rock/Post-Metal interludes that would make Pelican and Russian Circles green with envy. Though, the creative and subtle mood of the album slowly changes into destructive styles of Distorted Fuzzed Up Sludge/Stoner Metal. The atmosphere is slowly underplayed with Morag Tong laying down all the building blocks for perhaps the heaviest parts of the album to appear and fully reign supreme. There’s a sense of chaotic harmony to this track which showcases how Morag Tong have matured into better songwriters since their celebrated debut album. The second half of the track features a jaw-dropping moment where a single riff changes the whole complexity and message of the album which acts as the perfect gateway for Morag Tong to unleash more brutal vocals and sludgy nightmarish sounds whilst still retaining a grasp of Stoner Metal reality. 

The final song of No Sun, No Moon is perhaps best described as a multi-part track telling different chapters of the same story. As Morag Tong blends Post-Rock cinematic storytelling techniques where the song is mostly Ambient driven. The next stage of the song changes into heavier areas of Sonic and Doomed Out Experimentation where the music is constantly evolving with sublime Ambient textures once again being quite spectacular without overstating the mark. The song may not seem the heaviest to end the album with but you’ll be surprised at how aggressive and how daring this song actually ventures into. The music is beautifully melodic and showcases some of the best sounds on the entire album.

Grieve lives upto its title by actually you feel remorse and sorrow from the album but it’s one that also offers hope and that’s very hard to pull off. With wonderfully rich observed production values allowing Morag Tong to reach far greater creative heights they achieved with their last album. This is a fact not lost on Swedish Premiere Rock Label - Majestic Mountain Records - who are releasing this album. And they know a thing or two about releasing albums from great bands to the underground scene already. So if it’s good enough for them then take that as another recommendation to add this amazing album to your collection.

Grieve can only be described as WOW or perhaps even better for me personally - As one of the most wonderfully diverse albums you’ll hear this year within the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal underground scene.

Morag Tong unveils new video for At First Light; Album out October 6th on Majestic Mountain Records And Announce October 2023 UK Tour

London based Progressive Psych Doomsters Morag Tong have a video out for the first single to be released from upcoming sophomore album Grieve which can be found over at Invisible Oranges who state that:

"At First Light" gets loud, but there's always a sense of skillful control behind the onslaught, and there's swaths of drone-enriched hypnotism helping to give the loud bits the proper context. Melodic lead work lends the sometimes somber, sometimes hopeful proceedings an especially thoughtful extra layer, hinting at mysteries that only Morag Tong's dialed-up amplifiers can possibly reveal."

Grieve is the band's long-awaited follow-up to 2018's acclaimed full-length debut Last Knell of Om and marks their first release on Majestic Mountain Records. Regarding the album Vocalist/Drummer Adam Asquith states "we wanted to create something huge and heavy, but also gorgeous, textured and atmospheric. Incorporating both massive, aggressive wall of sound sections and more pensive, stripped back ambient instrumentals I think we have hit that sweet spot - something anguished and anxious, crumbling and dangerous, yet eerily beautiful and oozing with a love for life itself."

Review

Morag Tong debut album - Last Knell Of Om - is one of those rare albums that show waves of huge psychedelic creativity throughout the entire record. Morag Tong are very hard to describe. As they blend a lot of different sounds in their music.

Take the opening track - Transmission - for example. This is an Ambient Post-Rock/Post-Metal song that feels influenced by Pelican and Russian Circles. However Morag Tong add psychedelic/spaced out moments that leave you wanting more. It's quite restrained compared to the other songs on the album. Though it gives the listener a good indication on how spaced out and trippy the album becomes.

Second track - New Growth - sees Morag Tong adding a heavier Sludge/Doom Metal groove whilst keeping the Psychedelic elements firmly part of the action. The vocals from Adam are superb. Blending angry Sludge/Doom based vocals with trippy based lyrics is a work of genius from the band. The vocals become softly spoken towards the end of the song with Morag Tong play a quieter style of music. Though the heavy loud progressive riffs soon make a welcome return as the song becomes more aggressive.

Third track - We Answer - opens with a subtle post-rock/sludge rock groove as Morag Tong take time in bring the heavy sounds to the listener. Though the album starts reflecting a more seventies prog-rock feel. The vocals from Adam are straight on point yet again. I admire how Morag Tong's music can be so quietly restrained one moment and pure sludge metal aggression the next. It's a hard sound to pull but Morag Tong excel on all levels here.

Fourth track - To Soil - feels like We Answer Part Two as this song continues the heavy distorted psychedelic sounds of the previous song. It's a beautifully played song that has the right balance of post-rock passages and the familiar psychedelic doom/sludge metal riffs. This is perhaps my favourite song on the album.

The final two songs Ruminations and Ephemera / Stare Through The Deep - perhaps contain the heaviest moments of the album with Morag Tong excelling once again in creating eerie familiar sounds but still maintaining an air of originality around the entire album. The production is first rate. Though I'm not surprised with Slabdragger's Sam Thredder behind the production desk.

Last Knell Of Om is a deeply ambitious album and one that sees Morag Tong play to their absolute strengths. The album is a dazzling and superb combination of so many different sounds that you'll be listening to this album over and over again just to make sense of it all.

Last Knell Of Om is another album that I will rank as one of the best albums of the year.
