Review

Dutch Psych Stoner Rockers IRON JINN (featuring members of  The Devil’s Blood, Death Alley, Shaking Godspeed and Birth of Joy) new album Live At Roadburn features their entire 2023 performance at the legendary festival. The result is a mind expanding and hallucinogenic ride into the more experimental and diverse side of European Heavy Psych which has flashes of eclectic Blues Rock and Sprawling Space Rock passages with a Prog Rock flair that is quite jazzy in places.

The whole performance is quite captivating to watch and hear with the band going through a selection of their coolest tracks which has moments of 1960’s Hard Rock reminiscent of The Who, The Doors, and The Rolling Stones with the coolness of modern day Stoner Rock bands that appear throughout the album especially on tracks such as Soft Healers, Blood Moon Horizon and Lick It Or Kick It which all impress within the confinements of the first half of the album.

There’s a dark and despairing sensibility to the Orchestral and Instrumental arrangements that IRON JINN played within this classic sounding performance. When the band started exploring The Mars Volta inspired freakouts and guitar experimentation then IRON JINN really started to prove their worth to an ever appreciative audience in attendance.

Later stages of the record sees iRON JINN explore the 1990’s Alt Rock/Indie Rock movement with some epic flashes of classic Shoegaze with trippy Psychedelic elements which gives a more dreamlike sound to the band where their music becomes hard to describe or list under current genre rules and conventions. This is a ROCK BAND creating and playing their own original style of Psychedelic Rock which becomes a better record the more times you listen to the record.

Other great songs to check out are Cage Rage, Winding Rage and Truth Is Your Dagger impressing me the most. IRON JINN perhaps add a soulful Ambient Post-Rock flow to their performance which transforms into world-building Psychedelic Rock with multiple Classic Rock guitar solos that last an age but one that you’re willing to hear and fully appreciate.

IRON JINN delivered a classic set for the Roadburn Ages and this album captures that performance brilliantly with exquisite production values allowing the record to carry the right amount of raw-sounding atmospherics that we all demand to hear from a top-level live album.

Live At Roadburn is an absolute delight from one of the most definitive Psych Rock bands the European scene currently has right now.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
