Brad Frye announces first solo album, an instrumental drone-meets-spaghetti western offering.

Brad Frye is known as the owner of Desert Records, founder of Red Mesa, and half of the duo Droni Eye Omi.

In the spring of 2025, Brad Frye set out to self-record his first solo album.

Armed with a Reverend baritone guitar, a Fender Champ tube amp, a solar powered generator, and a pedal board, Frye hiked out to remote locations around Albuquerque, NM.

Frye set up a Zoom H6 recorder to capture the ambient natural sounds of the New Mexican landscape. Birds, trains, rivers, wind, insects, and animals are heard throughout the songs.

Drone meets spaghetti western.vPartially composed, but mostly improvised, this is hypnotic and mesmeric instrumental electric guitar music.

100% recorded outside in the high desert….

…A love letter to New Mexico.

Exclusive Song Premiere Of Sludge/Post-Metallers WE FOLLOW THE EARTH New Song SIRENS From Upcoming New Album FOAMDRINKER

We Follow the Earth is a sludgy doom band that will occasionally lean into a post-metal sound. Located in Winston Salem, North Carolina, the core of their sound is built on slow, crushing riffs, ever present soul shaking bass, and aggressive, strained screams.

Started as a solo project for Matthew Crotts, with his brother, Robert Crotts, offering to write the concept story and lyrics for the debut album “Lightbearer” in 2023. Shortly after releasing the debut album, writing started for the 2nd concept album “Extinct”, which was recorded/engineered by Jamie King and released in March 2024.

This new album, “Foamdrinker”, takes the listener on a journey through a world that is, for unknown reasons, stuck in a perpetual winter. Facing extinction, our characters are willing to go to any lengths to survive, but dangers beyond the ice lurk in the depths of the ocean and within ourselves. The struggle to overcome these challenges that we are presented with, both the external and the internal superstitions about how we think the world should work from the crux of this story. How we balance selfless acts against selfish ones can save or doom the world.

Thanks to the amazing folks at Desert Bloom PR, we're excited to premiere the debut single and video for SIRENS from the upcoming new album - FOAMDRINKER.

Album credits:

Matthew Crotts – Vocals, guitar
Josh Burton – Guitar
Jason “Buddha” Myers – Bass
Matthew Pickard – Drums
Robert Crotts – Story/Lyric writer
Engineered by Jacob Beeson

Review

Near Fall is the latest EP from Stoner Metallers HOT RAM which contains a bevy of outstanding grooves from the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal world. There’s a heavy reliance of DOWN-TUNED and FUZZ METAL riffology inspired by the likes of High On Fire, The Melvins, Acid King and Black Sabbath, However, Near Fall has its own distinctive sound with HOT RAM playing a deliberate slow paced sound to maximise the full “VIOLENT” musical energy that only becomes seedier, heavier and more violent with each passing moment.

The EP only lasts for nineteen minutes across three superbly played tracks with HOT RAM even developing a delicious Blues Rock and Classic Hard Rock sound that is played to great levels of distorted melody within the standout opening track of Vimana Swamp. There’s a sudden shift to NOLA and Southern Metal on the later stages especially when Billy Konkel’s vocals adds a gloomy Americana and Post-Punk delivery which reminds me of the legendary Neil Fallon at times.

It’s good to see HOT RAM delivering a different slice of Stoner Metal within each individual track but including the classic WEEDIAN framework within both the lyrics and music that’s contained throughout. There are some moments when the Blues Rock and Psych Rock aspects have a grizzled and distorted effect which allows some classic Acid King / Melvins riff-worship to appear mostly on the tracks Black Weed and Ironbound.

HOT RAM employs a certain Prog Metal style to form behind the scenes with a free flowing style of Sludge Rock overlapping with that seedy Southern Metal landscape on different stages of the record. The music is always aggressive and beautifully LOUD which captures the classic era of Sludge/Stoner Metal down to a fine art.

It’s a shame the EP is only three tracks long as I was completely in my comfort zone before the EP suddenly ends but it’s always best leaving the audience wanting more. Let's hope a more substantial record isn’t too far behind as HOT RAM may have laid down the groundwork for a new exciting chapter of their careers with this EP.

This is first rate stuff. End Of.

Sludge/Stoner Metallers HOT RAM Release New Song BLACK WEED From Upcoming New EP NEAR FALL

HOT RAM is an Atlanta based Stoner Metal band formed in 2016. It was during this time that Billy Konkel, HOT RAM founder, while working as a sound man in local Atlanta’s clubs, realized that he needed to be on the other side of the microphones and that he had a lot of music to write. Konkel enlisted Gordon White (Tetsu Nakasaka a local bassist/guitar player to play drums. Gordon brought along Dee Flores on bass and together they recorded 2017’s E.P. “Leave A Beautiful Corpse”, 2018’s “Where Light Goes to Die”, and 2021’s “Electric Medicine”.

In 2020, Covid did a number on the band as Gordon White moved to Japan, and Flores left the band to take care of his ailing father, just as “Electric Medicine” finished production and was released in 2021. Konkel played on with different drummers and bass players until settling with the current line up of Dwayne Jones on drums (Sourvein/Order of the Owl/Royal Thunder) and Jerimy McNeil on bass (Dayglo Mourning/Decibel Guitar Company).

HOT RAM has played shows with The Maryland Doom Fest 22 & 23, Snowblind Fest, Crowbar, Slomosa, Conan, Black Tusk, Howling Giant, and Heavy Temple while simultaneously working on a new album. Konkel was dealing with some personal issues during this time, with the loss of his grandmother in 2021 followed soon afterwards by his mother’s diagnosis of cancer and eventual passing, making 2021 through 2024 difficult but fruitful years.

Billy Konkel and HOT RAM powered through all life’s obstacles and delivered 2026’s new E.P. “Near Fall”, (self-released on their home imprint Second Down Records) The album’s title was inspired by watching copious amounts of pro wrestling with his wrestling obsessed wife. “Near Fall” epitomizes and accurately describes the last few years that Konkel and HOT RAM were pinned to the mat for a 2 count (a “Near Fall”) and always getting back up to live another day….

“Near Fall” began recording in 2022, tracking drums at Leadbelly Studios and the rest of the album was recorded and mixed by Konkel at “Dark Overlord Studio” an over 100 year old warehouse/punk house.

The opener “Vimana Swamp” is an about an ancient spaceship that crashed into a southern
swamp and hidden in obscurity waiting for a return trip home.

“Black Weed” Is about the smoking of the green: getting high and then Netflix and chilling with Lucifer himself from these self proclaimed “ High Priests of Dank Majik”.

Lastly “Ironbound” lays up huge slabs of riffage —enough to tranquilize an elephant, lyrically forged with the hammer and brimstone of the Crusades.

HOT RAM’s “Near Fall” E.P. is for anyone that’s been on the ropes with little hope, but digs deep and finds the passion for dusting yourself off and not giving up!

February 2026 is the 10th anniversary of HOT RAM, and they look for it to be their brightest and loudest year yet. They start off the New Year opening for “High on Fire” in January, following it up with a couple of still un-announced festival dates this spring and summer to build some tour runs around what is expected to be a busy year.

Temptation's Wings - StormForged (EP Review)

Release Date: September 09th 2025. Record Label:  Self Released. Formats: CD/DD/Vinyl

StormForged - Tracklisting

1.Aqua Tusk

2.Brother of the Storm

3.The Calm/The Fury

4.Hell-ene

Review

StormForged is the new EP from Southern Metallers Temptation’s Wings which offers four new tracks of classic HEAVY METAL riffage paired up with classic NOLA Metal energy which should appeal to fans of DOWN, Corrosion Of Conformity and Crowbar. The band add a great style of NWOBHM sounds to the EP with some fantastical lyrics that allows Temptation’s Wings to be quite PRIMAL and wholly AGGRESSIVE in the way they deliver their music.

Temptation’s WIngs are a super tight unit with a monstrous PROTO-METAL appetite being developed and played within the stunning opening track of Aqua Tusk. The Southern Metal influences are powerful, dynamic and played to perfection. The whole EP is full of classic Heavy Metal melodies and lyrics that veer slightly into “POWER METAL” domain but Temptation’s Wings have a great talent for keeping everything within the realm of Southern Metal and a haunting grounded vision at the same time.

Standout tracks are perhaps Brother Of The Storm and The Calm/The Fury with the band showing some fine Psychedelic energy within the instrumental passages and exquisite Heavy Metal melodies that you wouldn’t expect on an EP such as this. Sure, things can be over the top at times but it’s Temptation’s Wings talent for adding a sense of humanity and realism that makes this such an outstanding EP from start to finish.

StormForged is perhaps Temptation’s Wings best record in years and I hope they continue with this style of music especially with the stripped back production values that allows the band to have a more threatening, muscular and aggressive presence to their overall sound.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Valley of the Sun

Inspired by the total solar eclipse which took place on day 1 of recording (April 8, 2024), Quintessence marks a return to the three-piece format for Valley of the Sun. With massive, sub-octave guitars, thundering bass, and a backbone of rock-solid drumming, the album is a bit of a departure from previous efforts, but long-time fans of the band will still find all the riffs, melodies, and soaring vocals that they've come to expect from VOTS over its previous four LP's.

Ryan Ferrier- guitars and vocals
Chris Sweeney- bass, keys, and additional guitars
Johnny Kathman- drums, percussion, vocals and additional guitars

Exclusive Song/Video Premiere Of Heavy Blues/Stoner Rockers MALKASIAN New Song THE LONG PIG

We're happy to premiere the new song/video THE LONG PIG from Heavy Blues Rockers Malkasian which is from their upcoming new album which you can listen to below:

The Lowdown

Heavy Blues Album Description

FFO - Queens of the Stone Age, Pride and Glory, Clutch “Heavy Blues” is the feeling.

The genre is a second order issue.

Heavy

1. of great weight; difficult to lift or move
2. of great density; thick or substantial Burdensome

“Heavy Blues” is more despondent and apathetic. Yearning to feel something when you haven’t been able to feel at all.

This record attempts to honor the essence of the blues while embracing grit, chaos, and indifference to conventions like the heavy alternative scene. It was made because it had to be, “just because....” Tropes about “being born under the blood red moon” and other cliches won’t cut it. The words and feelings are for here and now.

It's heavy influenced blues.

The thought with “Heavy Blues” is blues influenced by heavy alternative rock. Emo blues...even if only by intention, not aesthetic. This blues is more overtly dark, lamenting, melancholy, insouciant, frustrated and affected."

Sean Malkasian - guitars and vocals
Jordan Bettner - drums
Sam Rucker - bass
Dave Rosenberg - harmonica

Review

Natural Order is the latest and fourth record from Instrumental Psych/Doom/Stoner Rockers The Long Hunt where the band explore the NUMBER FOUR in multiple and highly original ways on this album. The band explains:

“In many philosophical and spiritual traditions, the number 4 is associated with the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water, which are seen as foundational to the world and physical nature. It's a number often linked to order, structure, and natural cycles, such as the four seasons and the four phases of the moon.”

So this record is quite conceptual in places which allows The Long Hunt to add a Drone Rock element to their music whilst keeping their trademark use of Psych, Doom and Stoner Rock instrumental sounds. There’s  added levels of Alt Metal and Shoegaze momentum to their music which gives Natural Order quite a modern and forward thinking approach. The sound does become quite Progressive with the band switching to a trippy Stop/Start way of delivering their music which comes across surprisingly well on the opening batch of tracks of It Hurts The Shadows, The Cosmic Egg and Assiduous Gnaw where the Post-Rock melodies are quite soothing, haunting and wonderfully aggressive at the same time.

Taking cues from the likes of Karma To Burn, Colour Haze, Yawning Man and Monomyth but adding their own soulful identity into their musical surroundings. The record becomes dominated slightly by a classic Nineties atmosphere which gives The Long Hunt an unpredictable quality and fearless drive into creating areas of soulful Instrumental Doomed Out Stoner Rock.

An epic slice of Post-Doom aggression appears out of nowhere which allows the stunning rhythm section of Allison Kacmar Richards on Bass and Mark Lyon on Drums to generate an eerie Desert Rock attitude which moulds the musical and creative landscape for Trevor Richards epic guitar work to play some intense grooves along the way. When everything is put together, The Long Hunt are quite unbeatable with their majestic Psychedelic and Spaced Out passages. Throw in some Pink Floyd and ELDER classic sonic exploration on the later stages of the record especially on tracks such as: Spine Of Dusk, The Liminal Flow and A Narrow Path propelling the listener into full on Psychedelic Stoner Rock bliss.

The Long Hunt excels at playing fast-paced sounds and slowly pitched harmonies which constructs quite a gloomy atmosphere with great moments of Classic Hard Rock which sees the band develop a unique style of Instrumental Rock music. Natural Order is quite understated and I wouldn’t blame The Long Hunt to go way OVER THE TOP with epic progressive jams but they keep the whole flow quite soulful, organic and with real warmth emitting from the speakers.

Natural Order is expertly recorded and produced with The Long Hunt demonstrating once again why they’re one of the most essential Instrumental Stoner Rock bands we currently have within the underground scene. If you want an album with haunting poetic Post-Rock moments and full on aggressive Stoner Rock/Metal extended grooves then this is the place to be.

Exclusive Song Premiere Of Instrumental Doom Rockers THE LONG HUNT New Song ASSIDUOUS GNAW

The Long Hunt is a three-piece instrumental doom, drone, heavy-psych band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The group is known for blending sparse minimalism and textured drones with hard-hitting guitar riffs and memorable melodies. The music is both adaptable and dynamic, able to shift in volume and mood at a moment’s notice. With live shows often accompanied with samples, lights, and projected images, the band strives to create an immersive experience for the audience.

The band are releasing their new album Natural Order on Friday 18th July 2025.

We're excited to premiere the new song Assiduous Gnaw from the upcoming new album which you can listen to below.

Assiduous Gnaw: The name is a reference to inescapable unrelenting forces. Time, wind and rain will eventually grind even the mightiest of mountains into dust. A meditation on impermanence and a surrendering to the ultimate will of the universe. The song hits especially hard live, with the warbling vibrato and delay-drenched guitar giving way to the muscular, octave fuzz chorus. I feel it takes people by surprise every time. To me the song is a nice marriage of post-metal, light prog, and stoner-doom. I'm especially proud of the guitar solo, which utilizes some interesting scales and moderately intricate hammer-on/pull-off techniques." - Trevor Richards / The Long Hunt

Christopher Thomas Elliott - Everything

Review

Mean Bone is the latest sonic excursion of Doom Folk and Stoner Rock heavy grooves from one-man virtuoso Buzzard aka Christopher Thomas Elliott. The record feels like a protest and an essential call to arms to the crazed times happening within the United States Of America. Buzzard uses the creative weapons of Doom Metal and Stoner Metal at his disposal to get his essential message across which fuses Americana, Psych, Folk, Blues Rock, Grunge, Fuzz and Sludge for a record that feels more important than ever.

Imagine Neil Young fronting the likes of Saint Vitus, Trouble and Black Sabbath where you feel the creative intent that Buzzard ultimately strives for with Mean Bone. The lyrics take aim at the far right side of the political spectrum with real insight and highly articulate intelligence bringing themes such as AI, Religion, Political Ideology and the real evil of this GREED.

Christopher feels like he’s written a political thesis or downbeat political mission statement told through the power of Doom, Stoner and Folk Music. The music is semi-acoustic for the majority of the tracks and it’s quite sombre though Buzzard can be beautifully heavy that reminds me of Across Tundras at times.

The album has a loner attitude rebelling against the system on tracks such as Darkness Wins, Murder In The White Barn, Changeling and Ghost Of Orphan Jones that allows the first half of the album to quite therapeutic with the sudden transformation of AMERICANA to full on Doom/Stoner Rock rebellion.

The instrumental works are nothing short of technical brilliance with Christopher’s vocals giving a highly important political voice for a lost political generation. Buzzard even delves into Occult Rock imagery and Post-Punk attitude on the later stages of the record with the SHAMANIC attitude of Buzzard being very hard to describe. You can even hear moments of Space Rock and OTT fantasy themes which  allows Mean Bone to be quite trippy and psychedelic as you can imagine.

Other standout tracks to check out are: Twisted Love, Dunwich Farm, “Flies, Mosquitoes, Rats and Sparrows” and Ancient Ruins Of The 21st Century where Buzzard adds a downbeat Apocalyptic attitude to end the album on quite a depressing ending. The music itself is quite revolutionary and forward thinking with Buzzard creating a whole original sound of his own making which could hopefully inspire or influence a whole generation of future musicians for years to come.

This is mind-blowing stuff and deserves to be heard by the biggest audience possible within the entire HARD ROCK and HEAVY METAL scene.

Review

Upon Whom The Last Light Descends II : Amnesia Island is the latest album from Progressive/Psych Doom Metallers BEWARE OF GODS and it’s beautifully weird as much as it is musically complex with the band creating a heavy and uncompromising style of music. BEWARE OF GODS is mainly the work of Jason O’Donnell who is joined on the record by the likes of Feederwire, Eric Plonka, Kellii Scott and Pete Grossmann on different parts of the album.

This has an experimental Post-Doom and Post-Metal theme at its creative core with foreboding Progressive instrumental passages that draw inspiration from the Industrial Rock/Metal world. There’s a mysterious Electronica and Sludgy guitar movement with Jason’s twisted vocals moving between clean vocals and harsh growls that come alive within the excellent second track The End Of The Wide Awake Nightmare. Surreal and nightmarish soundscapes blend Ambient textures and sullen heavy instrumental sounds that keep up with the Industrial and Electronic based sounds, glitches and beats that never feel out of place.

The standout track has to be the brilliantly titled third track Submerged By The Ghost Of A White Whale which feels inspired by the likes of NEUROSIS, ISIS and AUTHOR & PUNISHER. The Post-Doom surroundings transform into a progressive style of Post-Metal with massive amounts of gloomy Psychedelics allowing the band to align themselves closer to the DOOM & GLOOM world that TYPE O NEGATIVE made their names with. The song runs past the fifteen minutes mark with BEWARE OF GODS playing multiple different styles of Post-Doom and Sludge Metal where you can hear traces of Alt Metal and Grunge which I didn’t expect at all.

The rest of the album follows the same experimental narrative as Submerged By The Ghost Of A White Whale with moments of Post-Metal, Psych and Post-Doom methodology taking the record into heavier and twisted waters especially on tracks such as D.I.E. Sect and The Science Of Slow Moving Monsters.

Upon Whom The Last Light Descends II : Amnesia Island continues the bleak sonic vision that BEWARE OF GODS first started back in 2022 with their debut release Upon Whom The Last Light Descends PT I: I Am Named After Death. Both albums have similar themes and sounds to each other but both standout as highly original works with different stories to entice listeners with. You could consider both records different sides of the same coin with BEWARE OF GODS once again creating a complex, challenging and refreshing style of Post-Doom and Post-Metal that will haunt your very being for a long time to come.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
