Hard Psych Unit SATURNA to release new album "Light and Shadow" on September 17th via Spinda Records & Ripple Music; debut new video "Self Told Lies"

Barcelona, Spain's hard psych rockers SATURNA are set to return this fall with their new album "Light and Shadow", released collaboratively on Spinda Records & Discos Marracas (Europe) and Ripple Music (North America), with the debut single and video "Self Told Lies" streaming everywhere now.

Watch the "Self Told Lies" lyric video // Live at Siete Barbas Estudio
+ listen to the single on all streaming services

Saturna's upcoming sixth studio album Light and Shadow retains the core elements that define their sound — hard rock, psychedelia and alternative rock — while expanding the Catalan foursome's sonic palette with new dynamics, renewed energy and greater textural variety. The contribution of Max Eriksson’s compositional input, alongside a desire to explore new sonic territories, has helped shape a record that pushes their sound forward without losing its essence.

Recorded and produced by the band themselves, with Enric Verdaguer handling mixing duties, Light and Shadow embraces a more organic, honest and live-oriented approach. Moving between heaviness and introspection, the album explores a wide emotional spectrum while maintaining the intensity that has always defined their music. Thematically, the record revolves around duality: light and darkness, love and hate, life and death. Its lyrics draw on personal experiences and the contradictions between opposing forces.

The artwork is once again created by Jondix, a long-time collaborator of the band internationally known for his work with Tool and other major names in the rock and metal scene.

SATURNA "Light and Shadow"
Out September 17th on Spinda Records & Discos Marracas (EU) and Ripple Music (North America)

From Barcelona, Saturna have spent over a decade building a distinctive identity within contemporary heavy rock, blending the raw power of classic hard rock with psychedelic atmospheres, alternative rock depth and a strong melodic sensibility. With a sound that is both powerful and emotionally rich, the band has developed a singular voice that resonates with audiences across Europe and beyond.

Across five studio albums, Saturna has crafted a musical language rooted in the balance between heaviness and sensitivity, combining crushing riffs with expansive sonic landscapes. Their previous record, The Reset (2023), marked a turning point: it reached number one on the US Doom Charts, appeared on numerous year-end lists, and strengthened their international profile, leading to extensive touring activity on both sides of the Atlantic. The band’s reputation has been built equally in the studio and on stage. Their live performances are defined by emotional intensity, instrumental precision and a genuine connection with the audience, establishing them as a rising force within the European heavy rock scene.

James Vieco - vocals, guitar
Max Eriksson - guitar
Rod Tirado - bass
Enric Verdaguer - drums

The second album by the Barcelona-based band Maragda will be titled 'Tyrants' and will be released on May 8, 2024, via Spinda Records - pre-orders are now available.

After teasing the title track last month, today they unveil a double single comprising the songs "Skirmish" and "My only link", presenting them in both studio and live versions, with the latter extracted from the live session they recently recorded at Siete Barbas Estudios.

Melodies, atmospheres, compositions of great complexity, and a garage attitude are the main components of 'Tyrants'.

For the creation of the album "Tyrants", Maragda embarked on a creative journey that took them to the Big Snuff Studios in Berlin, where they collaborated with studio engineer Richard Behrens, renowned for his work with bands like Kadavar and Elder. Subsequently, the mastering was handled by acclaimed engineer Peter Deimel (known for his work with bands like Motorpsycho) at the Black Box Studios in France, solidifying a successful collaboration that began with their debut album.

In the visual department, the band has once again partnered with Error! Design studio (known for works with Explosions In The Sky, Russian Circles, Mastodon) for the album's graphic design, ensuring a cohesive and captivating aesthetic experience for their followers.

Review

Dutch trio Bismut from Nijmegen has been around since 2016 but they are a brand new acquaintance to me as they unveil their third full-length 'Ausdauer'. Personally, instrumental music, when done with some thought and purpose, is very rewarding in so many ways. Simply being an instrumental band however does not mean you're great but that's definitely not a concern for Bismut. Nik, Huibert and Peter are not only brilliant musicians and song creators, they also know how to make their music speak without words. And that's something which requires talent.

After a lurking beginning, opener 'Mendalir' gradually moves faster and heavier only to revert to a more mellow setting for Nik's wonderful solos. Midway through they unleash a faster pace taking the song to eruption leaving you in a reborn state of mind. '不安 (Fuan)' has a sinister anxiety fuelled undertone while moving in a dreamlike state. Starts in mid-tempo but builds up gradually. The latter part brings in fusion-like elements manifesting the sinister feel. 'Despotisme' is the rocker on 'Ausdauer' although everything is relative. However, when Bismut throws off the shackles they tear it up. In between, 'Despotisme' is trippy and suggestive in the best possible way.

'Mašta' is a trip of the mind as Bismut really perform for the senses. Just close your eyes and let the band work their magic on you. This composition, like the entire album, allows your imagination to run free and that's the beauty of instrumental music. The last song is 'Euphoria' and it is more upbeat and elated as if a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Slows down very nicely in the middle before the band cranks it up in that wonderful way they do it.

I love it when albums come my way by bands I've never heard of yet they have been around for a while. Personally the joy to discover there's still greatness within music is bar to none. Not only does it restore my faith in an oversaturated world of music but I also get to backtrack these bands, of which Bismut definitely is one! Whatever your taste in music is, check out these Dutch giants, you won't regret it because Bismut's music crosses borders, in fact they erase borders and are omnipresent. Brilliant stuff!

Words by Hâkan Nyman

Ausdauer will be available to buy on CD/DD/Vinyl from Lay Bare Recordings and Spinda Records from October 20th 2023.

Psych/Acid/Fuzz/Kraut Rockers The Silver Linings Release New Song/Lyric Video For Cosmic Excursions From Upcoming New Album via Spinda Records

After the release of the song "Patient M" earlier in September and announcing last week that they'll be part of the line-up of the next edition of Alhambra Monkey Week in Spain, Andalusian psych band The Silver Linings is putting out on Friday "Cosmic excursions", second single of their upcoming debut album 'Pink Fish', available on October 11 through Spinda Records.

On this occasion, the band offers a face much closer to 60's psychedelia and space rock that will delight fans of bands such as Rolling Stones, Hawkwind, Acid Mess or Andalusian-psych-rock band Atavismo.

Formed in Malaga (Spain) in 2021, The Silver Linings self-released their debut EP ‘TSL’ back in May 2023. Just a few days later they were signed up by the indie record label Spinda Records (Moura, Fin del Mundo, Moundrag…) and went into the studio once again to record additional music to re-launch everything as their first full-length album in October 2023.

The Silver Linings are highly influenced by 20th century sci-fi, Moorcock's literature, Moebius' illustrations, Tarkovsky's cinema, Jodorovsky's work and the poetry of the beat generation; in addition to natural landscapes of Andalusia such as El Torcal in Antequera, the Gorafe desert, the dunes of Bolonia and the Strait of Gibraltar. Due to the type of music they make and the fact that they reside in the south of Spain, they could be part of the new wave of psychedelic rock in Andalusia, along with groups such as Atavismo, Híbrido , Lunavieja, Medicina, Santo Rostro, Mía Turbia, Gu Vo or DMBK; although their sound - closer to acid-psych-space-kraut-rock - makes one think more of bands like Causa Sui, Hawkwind or Can.

The pre-order for the vinyl edition will be available at spindarecords.com and Bandcamp, as well as the digital edition on the main digital streaming services.

THE SILVER LININGS | psych, acid, space, kraut from Spain - Announce New Album via Spinda Records

Taking their musical style and the fact that they’re based in the south of Spain into account, they could be included in the New Wave Of Andalusian Psychedelia, together with bands such as Atavismo, Híbrido, Lunavieja, Medicina, Santo Rostro, Mía Turbia, Gu Vo or DMBK, although their sound -closer to acid-psych-space-kraut rock- makes us think of Causa Sui, Hawkwind or even Can.

The Silver Linings’ first full-length album ‘Pink Fish’ was recorded, mixed and mastered at Hollers Analog Studio and it will be out on 11/10/2023 via Spinda Records as part of label’s ‘The Trippy Series’.

MARAGDA Premiere New Song And Video For EVIL SEED From Upcoming New EP

One year after the release of their self-titled debut album and just before heading to their first ever European tour, the psychedelic rock band Maragda decided to record a live session to capture their most direct sound and all the energy that the band had been offering on those live shows in early days.

The result is a live EP containing two brand new songs in which the trio formed by Guillem (guitars, vocals), Xavi (drums, vocals) and Marçal (bass, vocals) shows us two different visions of what they understand by psychedelia. Whilst in "The Reckless" they mix elements of garage rock and heavy psych to tell the story of a perturbated individual who could be any of us; in "Evil Seed" they change to modern psychedelia with a more classic riff to speak about someone who turns into a dead tree after eating a seed.

The live sessions 'The Reckless / Evil Seed' was recorded at Cal Gravat, in an outdoor environtment, on 6th November 2022 by Martí and Marc G. (video) Marçal S. and Joan R. (audio); then mixed and mastered by Marçal Itarte. It's coming out on 2nd June on both video and a limited edition of 300 seven inches vinyl records through the collaboration of Spanish indie labels Spinda Records and Nafra Records

Psych Alt-Rock/Post Rockers LOMA BAJA Release New Song & Video For LA EMBOSCODA From Upcoming New Album

There are times when musicians with a long history behind them need to write music without restricting themselves, for the simple fact of letting what they have inside flow, forgetting their past and who they are. The idea of going back to basics and playing around with automatic writing can always lead you into unfamiliar territory.

That is precisely what Pacomoto (G.A.S. Drummers), Jorge García (Adrift, El Páramo), Víctor Teixeira (Giganto, Another Kind Of Dead) and Raúl Lorenzo (Sou Edipo) must have thought when they decided to lock themselves in the rehearsal room at some point in 2020 and start writing songs without any preconceived idea, except to experiment.

The result of those two years of experimentation by Loma Baja is 'Piscinas Verticales', an album whose concept goes around the idea of the spontaneous and surreal, as if it were the soundtrack of your worst nightmare. Their sound goes beyond music genres -it's post-everything-, although you can see some similarities with bands like Beak, Portishead, Fugazi, True Widow or Liars.

After releasing the first single "Boda Final / Velorio" on 26th April, Loma Baja puts out "La Emboscada" as second single on 12th May, just two weeks before their debut album is available.

The band say this about the song:

"It’s about nightmares, places that generate strange feelings and about the hidden side of things. The songs seek to generate that feeling that stays with you after having seen something weird. This album is the result of the search for a common point between four guys who come from different places and who found a place in the darkness. We like “trial and error” and this is the way we wrote ‘Piscinas verticales’, mixing elements from kraut-rock, post-punk, alt-rock, post-rock and other exotic music.”

Piscinas Verticales' was recorded live in the Summer of 2022 at Metropol Studios (SP) by Rafa Camisón; then mixed at Estudio 79 (SP) by Rafa Camisón; and mastered at Ultramarinos Costa Brava (SP) by Víctor García.

The album is coming out on 26th May 2023 through the collaboration between indie labels Spinda Records (SP), Lay Bare Recordings (NL), Clostridium Records (GE) and Echodelick Records (US). Album pre-order available at label sites from 21st April.

Psych Power Trio AJEEB Premiere New Song/Video For Hollowed Out From Upcoming New Album

Canary Islands power trio AJEEB are releasing a second studio album called 'Refractions' on 29th March 2023, with the pre-order of the physical editions and a first video-single "Hollowed Out" set to be out out on 16th February.

It's been 5 years since they released their debut album 'Toss and Turn'. During all these years they haven't stopped at all; they were extensively touring Spain and other countries such as UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland and Cape Verde. And now they're back with a new collection of songs in which they move between the alternative rock, noise and shoegaze.

'Refractions' smells like alternative rock with high doses of fuzz and reverb. These 11 songs represent a true twist on our debut album 'Toss and Turn' and a new beginning after an extremely complex moment that we were going through... From the lyrics themselves to the way the songs were written, and even the simple fact of recording it completely in analogue, we had the objective to capture our purest and most direct essence. We intend to show that the changes that take place around us end up transforming us and forcing us to evolve from one way or another, depending on the perspective from which you look at it and how we interpret them. 'Refractions' is an album to be listened loud, letting yourself be carried away by the different moods you'll get into.

Ajeeb's new album is coming out via indie label Spinda Records, in collaboration with a bunch of other Spanish labels such as Violence In The Veins, Quebranta Records, Noizeland Records, Hey Boy Hey Girl, Bandera Records, Naife and Hombre Montaña, as well as Clever Eagle Records and The Ghost is Clear Records, both from the US. The impressive artwork is by The Braves Church, based on photographies by Sara GDM and Daniel L. Fleitas.

SANTO ROSTRO Premiere New Song For Telarañas From Upcoming New Album Después no habrá nada

Spanish psych-doom rockers SANTO ROSTRO are back in business with their 4th studio album 'Después no habrá nada' - to be released on 10th March 2023 via Discos Macarras, LaRubiaProducciones & Spinda Records, although the single "Telarañas" is coming out on 10th February. The pre-order for vinyl, compact discs and digital editions starts that same day (links at the bottom).

Andalusian power trio returns with a dark-psych rock album, with long tracks including complex instrumental developments, processed atmospheres and a dirty sound plenty of echoes, different modulations and occasional synths.

Many things have changed in SANTO ROSTRO since they put out 'The Healer' in 2017, and this is obviously reflected in this new album. 'Después no habrá nada' is the result of a more mature band, with thousands of kilometers touring both Spain and EU on their back, several TV appearances and a couple of stand-alone video-singles - and everything 100% DIY.

This way, we find ourselves with a more balanced and determined sound, with a tremendous solid and seamless rhythmic base, powerful and organic at the same time, with a dance of tempos that accelerate and slow down at the right time - there's no clapperboard in here.

Artwork: 'Después no habrá nada' by Santo Rostro

In 'Después no habrá nada' you'll find from doom to sludge, with high doses of progressive metal and even Andalusian heavy psych. It could be understood as a great mix of bands such as Viaje a 800, Adrift, Oransi Pazuzu, Mastadon or Russian Circles, but with an imprint that only SANTO ROSTRO has. This new album is a kind of a personal delirium and hangover; with some rehearsal room taste and accumulated fatigue.

The album was produced by the band itself; then recorded and mixed by Raúl Pérez at La Mina (Spain); and mastered by Mario G. Alberni at Kadifornia Mastering (Spain). Behind the artwork is The Braves Church, based on photographies by Manu Rosaleny.

'Después no habrá nada' comes out on 10th March 2023 through Discos Macarras, LaRubiaProducciones and Spinda Records in the following editions:

150x Black Vinyl
150x Orange Translucent Vinyl

Review

Spanish Doom/Stoner Metal quartet Lunavieja debut self titled album is one that focuses on both the Occult and Psychedelic Weedian sounds. The album is sung primarily in Spanish so I can’t really comment on what the lyrics actually mean but the vocals are varied and superb throughout. The music on the other hand is heavy and combines both Doom Metal and Stoner Metal themes with a haunting Psychedelic Weedian vibe.

The album is aggressive with Lunavieja playing distorted amplifier grooves which you can hear from the early stages of the album and right to the very end. The atmosphere can be quite manic when the band switches things up a bit with areas of Ambient Rock/Metal being dropped in for certain parts of the album. There are some different musical elements to Lunavieja that were quite unexpected like the trippy Spaced Out vibes for a more captivating style of music.

Lunavieja are one of the more interesting bands I’ve heard from the Spanish Doom/Stoner Metal scene with the band showing some true originality with this release especially on tracks such as: Mal de Luna, La Güestia, Hécate and La Quema.

If you’re fascinated by bands such as SLEEP, Uncle Acid and Black Sabbath then Lunavieja will be the perfect band for you to admire and enjoy but perhaps on the more weirder side of WEEDIAN based Doom/Stoner Metal.

The instrumental work is excellent from start to finish, especially with the thrilling guitars contained on the album.

Lunavieja debut album is a captivating, striking and bewitching style of modern day Psych Doom/Stoner Metal that the underground scene needs to fully get behind and discover this great band right now.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Romance de Andrés d'Orois, second single of MOURA's second album 'Axexan, espreitan' out on May 27, 2022

'Axexan, espreitan' is a map of the intangible heritage of the Galician people in the North West coast of Spain drawn up based on personal experiences, popular traditions, collective rituals as a social element and the presence of the souls of those who are now gone. A peek into the subconscious that gives voice to that heritage which "contemplates and lurks" in silence, blurring the thin line between the world of the living and the world of the dead.

Two years after the release of their self-titled debut album and being featured with their stand-alone single "Muiñeira da Maruxaina" on Spinda Records 12x 7" compilation boxset 'Grados. Minutos. Segundos.' in 2021, Spanish psych-prog rockers MOURA are back with their long-awaited second studio album in which they go even deeper into Galician tradition, both lyrically and instrumentally. 'Axexan, espreitan' is scheduled to be released on May 27, 2022 via Spinda Records,

If in March they advanced a first single titled "Baile do dentón", a song halfway between neo-psychedelia and kraut-rock, the Galicians are now launching "Romance de Andrés d'Orois". On this occasion, it is a composition much closer to traditional folklore that ends up breaking into a multi-colored explosion of progressive rock and in which tells the story of Andrés, a cattle dealer from the Orois parish who was murdered at beginning of the 20th century by two thieves in the Ribadiso forest when returning from a fair. Through its relevant video, band members pay tribute to Beat-Club, the legendary German television music program of the late 60s and early 70s, which was attended by groups such as Yes, Black Sabbath, Can, T. Rex, King Crimson or Grateful Dead.

In 'Axexan, espreitan', the singer and percussionist Belém Tajes leaves the Irmandade Ártabra (currently made up of 8 collaborating musicians specialized in traditional Galician folklore) to form part of the nucleus of MOURA together with Diego Veiga, Hugo Santeiro, Fernando Vilaboy, Luis Casanova and Pedro Alberte.

You can view the new video for Romance de Andrés d'Orois below

This new album was recorded during the summer of 2021 in a house on the outskirts of A Coruña (Spain) by J. Gutiérrez (who also worked on the production with the band itself); to later be mixed by the producer himself in Cangas (Pontevedra) in the fall of the same year and mastered by Álvaro Gallego at Agmastering.

In the visual section, the cover design is the work of Hugo Santeiro, based on images provided by the Museo do Pobo Galego; the photographs by Leo López; the video of "Romance de Andrés d'Orois" by Leo López, Hugo Santeiro & Fernando Vilaboy; and the video of "Baile do dentón" by Pablo Soto Goluboff.

'Axexan, espreitan' will be released on May 27, 2022 through the Andalusian indie label Spinda Records as part of its 'The Trippy Series' in digital, compact disc, cassette and in a triple vinyl edition limited to 400 hand-numbered copies in black, 250 on clear purple and 150 on marbled orange. Pre-order is now up and running at spindarecords.com and spindarecords.bandcamp.com.
