Alt/Psych/Stoner Rock Band Filthy Hippies release new album A Colourful Trip Through Melancholy

Cape Town-based alternative-psychedelic band Filthy Hippies have made a name for themselves in the South African music scene with their signature shoegaze-infused sound. Since their formation in 2018, they have cemented their reputation as a standout act in the country’s thriving psych scene, sharing stages with notable bands such as Dangerfield and delivering an unforgettable performance at the 2019 Endless Daze Festival.

After a period of evolution and lineup changes, Filthy Hippies are thrilled to announce their latest album, A Colourful Trip Through Melancholy. This release marks a significant chapter for the band as they bid farewell to longtime collaborator Mark Van Zyl, who was instrumental in shaping the record before his upcoming move to New Zealand.

“His intense creativity will be sorely missed,” shares frontman Andrew Paine. “But it was awesome to get to go down the rabbit hole one last time with him before he goes.”

‘A Colourful Trip Through Melancholy’ is exactly that—a vibrant yet introspective journey through the highs and lows of life. “It’s just reflections on everyday experiences and emotions,” Paine explains. “A journey through a slightly jaded mind.”

The album embraces a message of presence and acceptance, reminding listeners to cherish fleeting moments. “Enjoy every moment as it happens,” says Paine. “Things fade away far too quickly, and life moves in very definite cycles.”

Buy / Stream A Colourful Trip Through Melancholy

Filthy Hippies took an organic approach to songwriting, allowing tracks to develop naturally through jam sessions at their home studio, The Sanctuary. “The usual jamming at our home studio, and the songs just fell into place,” Paine states simply.

The recording process was an immersive and intensive experience, with the band diving deep into late-night brainstorming sessions and extended tracking marathons. “Everything was recorded at our home studio, The Sanctuary. Lots of late-night brainstorming and intensely long sessions—it was a lot of fun.”

With a Phil Spector-esque wall of sound blending rich textures, layered harmonies, and deep-rooted pop sensibilities, A Colourful Trip Through Melancholy’ stands as a defining statement from Filthy Hippies.

Review

Red Sun is the new EP from Norwegian Psych/Prog/Stoner Rockers Sykofant who blend 1970’s Art Rock Experimentiation with a superb  Space Rock sound. Taking cues from the likes of ELDER, ALL THEM WITCHES and Pink Floyd there’s a deep aggressive energy to Sykofant’s overall journey on this record. The record has a fleeting “stop/start” delivery to their music which does burst over into areas of METAL in places which was quite a surprise which appears within the standout opening track Ashes.

Sykofant have a deliberate Post-Stoner theme to their music which allows the sudden shift in Prog Rock dynamics to suddenly appear and merge with Post-Rock instrumental surroundings being quite peaceful and aggressive at the same time. The lyrics are quite deceiving with Sykofant never outlining their full creative plans for the record outright which allows Red Sun to have a mysterious aura around it all. The music is quite vivid with its over reliance on Classic Hard Rock delivery but Sykofant are more than competent to include a thorough and aggressive modern day sound. There is some epic classic rock/metal guitar shredding on certain parts of the EP which is highly satisfying to listen to.

Second song Red Sun starts with an Ambient and Distorted based movement which fully transforms into a Prog Rock musical odyssey with light Jazz Rock touches bringing a subtle Psych/Space Rock style of music which owes a huge debt to the likes of Pink Floyd. The song is quite abstract and way out there with it’s mellow surroundings before Sykofant start experimenting with heavier strands of Space Rock and Prog Rock appearing for brief outbursts of melodic aggression.

The final song Embers opens with an intense blast of Prog Rock/Metal which reminds me of Mastodon in places with Sykofant experimenting  with their music yet again. Shades of YES and GENESIS appear within the vocals and lyrics written for this track which can be quite challenging to listen to at times. The song could have easily felt disjointed but Sykofant blends Rock/Metal instrumental passages and the appearance of an actual choir is sheer genius and downright insanity which gives this track a highly original sound that feels operatic and cinematic at the same time.

Red Sun is quite a daring, highly original, brilliantly surreal and downright bonkers record with Sykofant firing on all cylinders that makes this EP a masterful record in it’s own right.

Introduce Yourselves: MOSKITOS

What is the name of your band?

Moskitos

What is the genre of music that you play?

Garage/Psych/Art Rock

Can you give a brief history of the band of how it came together and where it is today?

We formed in 2021 as the South African Covid lockdown ensued, and the band had the opportunity to play one sold-out first show to a frothing home crowd before the plug was pulled on live music in SA. We utilised the following months to meticulously craft their sound and live set with a new melodic, yet high energy take on the psych rock revivalist roots that are inherent to our DIY Cape Town rock scene.

The band dropped a four-track EP, Adieu Or Die, as well as a double-single release with a music video which premiered on It’s Psychedelic Baby Magazine in 2022. A few national tours and larger shows followed, including festival slots at That 70s fest, Pangea and Helter Skelter and releases were featured on local radio stations, SA Alternative Top 20 chart and playlists such as Spotify’s SA Rock.

Moskitos reopened our account in 2024 with several singles that lean into the more gritty garage rock sound and energy we cultivated at our live shows, still aiming to maintain the methodical musical and lyrical approach to piece together a sonic journey that draws the listener in from the inception.

What can people expect from your music?

The new album, Mirage, is a heady collision of sound. It’s an album for those who dare to question what they think they know. Our music shifts gears from composed emotional existentialism to unapologetic garage-rock with a good mix of wandering off into weird little pockets of soundbites before we bring everything back together.”

The band has always found a home in blending psychedelic guitar manipulations and infectious hooks, drawing inspiration from iconic acts like The Kinks and Nuggets-era bands. Still, in equal measure, we embrace the diverse musical tastes of the three members that range from Black Sabbath to the Beach Boys and more recent psych rock and art rock acts such as Thee Oh Sees, The Black Angels, and The Smile.

What is the best release that folks should check out from your band?

We are poised to drop our debut full LP, Mirage, on 1 November 2024. The album shows Moskitos at our most visceral -  it’s a relentless journey where anything can happen next. The first singles including Woman and Ten Lies are out on all good streaming platforms.

Review

Psych/Sludge/Stoner Metallers Faces Of The Bog released their classic debut album Ego Death back in 2016 and is perhaps one of the most overlooked records from the underground scene. Now fast forward eight years later and the band are back with a different kind of record. As the band have bravely decided to cover the whole of the Pink Floyd classic album Animals. This has been done previously before by Kyle Shutt (The Sword) back in 2017 with his critically acclaimed take on Dark Side Of The Moon though this time called Doom Side Of The Moon.

Faces Of The Bog keep firmly close to the script of the original version but with the band adding moments of Sludge Rock, Doom Rock and Stoner Rock edging closely to the forefront of the classic Pink Floyd creative template of exploratory Psychedelic Rock passages. The sound this time is quite vibrant with a heavier and sonic sound with Faces Of The Bog injecting their own underground personality into the record with intriguing results especially within Dogs and Pigs (Three Different Ones).

I will admit I’m not a huge fan of Pink Floyd. I deeply respect and admire their musical legacy but I’m only aware of a few albums that I’ve listened to with Dark Side Of The Moon and Animals being the main ones. However, this record has a haunting message that feels as relevant ever since it was originally released back in 1977. The vocals contained here resemble the overall flow of the original recordings but still vastly different at the same time with excellent work by both Trey Wedgeworth and Paul Bradfield.

This version of Animals is perhaps way more Spaced Out and Psychedelic compared to the original which allows Faces Of The Bog to retain that aggressive sound heard on their debut album to be heard on this record as well. Once again the band have teamed up with the genius that is Sanford Parker who co-produced, recorded and mixed this album and sometimes the record has a gloomy Progressive Metal or Post-Metal attitude especially on the later stages of the album the haunting cover of Sleep.

Faces Of The Bog have delivered a wonderfully progressive and modern take on a landmark album with Animals. With subtle and heavy pounding Sludge Metal grooves becoming the highlight of the whole album that makes me feel happy that Faces Of The Bog are back. I’ve heard that there’s new music coming from Faces Of The Bog in the future but until then Animals is a stunning interpretation to announce your return to the underground scene with.

Review

Psych/Stoner Rock visionaries Mars Red Sky return with their new album Dawn Of The Dusk and sees the band breakdown their music into a more conceptual style of Art Rock with elements of their trademark Psych, Doom, Space and Stoner based sounds being added of that classic style of MRS based heaviness. Mars Red Sky even taps into creative influences such as Russian Circles and David Bowie for this release.

Dawn Of The Dusk may not be your standard MRS album and may actually confuse their established fanbase at first. However, there’s a magical style of Psychedelic Doom being played throughout the whole album. The Post-Rock leaning atmospherics of the later stages of the album does have moments of heavy tripped out Cosmic/Space Rock flavours with Julian’s sweet-natured vocals being the main conduit for the band to establish that emotional rapport and connection with the listener as what happened with all MRS releases.

The opening two tracks of the album Break Even and Maps Of Inferno sees Mars Red Sky sticking to their tried and tested winning formula with heavy fuzz rock sounds and melodic strands of Cosmic Doom which allows the listener to fully come on board with the albums main artistic message and vision. Multi-layered effects and fuzzy guitars combine for a dramatic and more gloomier sound. Julian’s vocals become slightly fractured and operatic within Maps Of Inferno which starts to show small instances of the creative left-turn MRS will take next.

Third song The Final Round sees bassist Jimmy Kinast take over vocal duties and offer a more cerebral 1980’s Alt-Rock vision and delivers a stunning vocal rendition inspired by David Bowie in places. The song flirts between Post-Punk and Gothic melodies with a more twisted and nuanced style of Doom/Stoner Rock that can be quite romantic in places even with the more AMPLIFIER WORSHIP driven guitars.

Fourth song A Choir Of Ghosts allows MRS to return to the Post Apocalyptic style of Fuzzed Up Cosmic Doom with Post-Metal flourishes appearing between the cracks of the Sludge/Stoner Rock jams that remain some of the heaviest on the whole album. This is purely an instrumental song which allows MRS to revisit heavy progressive sounds not heard since their earlier albums.

Fifth song Carnival Man is classic MRS through and through. The instrumental moments convey a deep mysterious sense of Post-Rock/Post-Metal heaviness with slow-paced Fuzz leaning Doom/Stoner grooves. Julien is back performing vocal duties and this is MRS doing what they do best. Highly confident Cosmic/Space/Fuzz Rock sounds with that Stoner Rock swagger that allows Mars Red Sky to play their delicate, heavy and aggressive style of delicious sounding music. The song retains a sense of Post-Rock urgency within the mellower and slow-paced moments of the track.

The final three tracks of the album Trap Door, Slow Attack and Heavenly Bodies opens the world of Mars Red Sky to a more bombastic and progressive style with lush orchestral and instrumental moments being quite ethereal in places especially on tracks such as Slow Attack and Heavenly Bodies.

The final track Heavenly Bodies sees the welcome return of Queen Of The Damned (Helen Ferguson) who both collaborated previously earlier this year on their acclaimed EP.  This song is a brave and bold choice to close the album with. As it’s a semi-acoustic track with Helen’s soothing vocals and folk-rock instrumental moments. So don’t go expecting an all out HEAVY STONER ROCK track, as this allows the album to end naturally and peacefully.

Dawn Of The Dusk shows a different side to the band but one that is still a highly original album that allowws Mars Red Sky to still be considered as one of the most inventive bands within the Psychedelic Doom/Cosmic/Stoner Rock scenes. With first class production values throughout, Dawn Of The Dusk is another AOTY contender from Mars Red Sky.

San Jose Instrumental Post-rock Duo to Release The Last Stop Ranch EP Via Entelodon Records in September

On the heels of their second EP Fever Canyon, San Jose-based instrumental post-rock duo IN THE PONDS will release their third EP, The Last Stop Ranch this coming September.

The Last Stop Ranch works with a classic rock tone palette—sizzly SG humbuckers and wobbly delays, to name a few primary colors. For the band, discovering the tracks was like stumbling across the mouth of a cave; something about it makes you crane your neck towards the dark. This is the music they imagine you’d hear from a dried-up well if you lowered yourself down and listened to what the walls had to say.

The Last Stop Ranch was recorded by guitarist David Perez and mixed by Art Bertik. The front cover artwork was created by bassist Jennifer Gigantino.

The Last Stop Ranch Track Listing:

1.You Can Kill Me Anytime (But You Won’t)
2.Playing with Matches
3.Hide and Seek

IN THE PONDS is a poet and a filmmaker getting married and starting an instrumental post-rock duo during pandemic lockdowns and California wildfires. It’s a honeymoon spent in quarantine, staring at soot-filled skies wondering how to capture feelings of isolation, dread, and love without using words. Their music pays homage to classic rock while experimenting with atmospheric textures for a sound that’s both familiar and otherworldly.

IN THE PONDS is:

David Perez – Guitar
Jennifer Gigantino – Bass

Exclusive Album Premiere Of ClĂžudy Skies New Album CHANGES Released via Argonauta Records

ClĂžudy Skies, Dreamgaze Atmospheric Post-metal, Est. 2019 Paris France, is a duo led by Lionel & Nicolas who both belonged to Ambryo (metal/hardcore 2000-2009) and Eyes Front North (Blackened Postmetal 2009-2019).

The main idea for this new project was to literally "change" direction by crafting an odd and beautiful landscape nourished by not only "Metal" but also many other music genres Lionel and Nicolas love such as indie rock, ambient, post rock, alternative...

As songs are the reflection of the composer's soul, it was important for them to impregnate their emotions into their music. It could sound like a cliché but sensitivity is part of ClÞudy Skies and the last 2 years they have been through with Covid-19 and lockdown have helped a lot to write in that direction.

Lionel and Nicolas composed and recorded everything except drums.

For that task they hired the talented Conny Pettersson (ANATA, ETERNAL LIES,TROJAN DOGS...) to perform subtle, ethereal, groovy and brutal drum parts. The band focused on sound quality and took particular care in fine-tuning track mixing.

As for the mastering, it has been processed by the great Magnus Lindberg responsible for many great albums (CULT OF LUNA, GHOST, SWITCHBLADE, PG.LOST...). This results in a clear, spacious and massive audio experience.

FFO: Deafheaven, Solstafir, Caspian, Cult of Luna, Katatonia

You can hear this stunning and emotionally charged album in full today thanks to the good folks over at Grand Sounds Promotions and Argonauta Records.

Changes will be available to buy via Argonauta Records from Friday 20th January 2023.

Review

Doom/Stoner Metallers Dust Prophet are taking a different creative route with their music on their debut album One Last Look Upon The Sky. Sure, they're inspired by the normal big-hitters of Doom/Stoner Metal such as KYUSS, Black Sabbath, CLUTCH and Electric Witch but you have to throw in bands such as TOOL, A Perfect Circle and even System Of A Down into the mix. With Dust Prophet playing a more experimental and Gothic style of music that brings an edgy creative attitude to the band.

Bleak and Progressive "Out There" Desert Rock/Psych Rock elements moving into a darker style of Doom/Stoner Metal with the bands lyrical content inspired by Biblical passages, classic  epic poem Paradise Lost and a wealth of different Occult/Gothic Writers that allow this album to become more of an "outcast'' feel when first approaching the album. However, Dust Prophet have one "ace" up their sleeve to endear themselves to the Doom/Stoner Metal underground community and that's the fantastic riff, grooves and weird sounds that accompanies the dark creative content on the album. The music is "KILLER" and has a "SUPER FRESH'' appeal that you feel within the first few stunning tracks of the album with A Storm Of Time & Space Part 1, When The Axe Falls and Dear Mrs Budd.

All tracks showcasing a band with a unique and vivid imagination with that Progressive Doom Metal sound merging with the confinements of WEEDIAN METAL with the religious and occult lyrical imagery blending a darker Psychedelic Background you begin to realize. Imagine if KYUSS smoked that really fucked up bag of weed and had a HOLY PREMONITION about the end of the world. Well, Dust Prophet prove that vision for me on tracks such as When The Axe Falls and Dear Mrs Budd.

The music does become more Alternative with hazy progressive and distant grooves allowing the vocals being slightly inspired by System Of A Down and TOOL. This may sound too experimental for some but I implore you to stay for the whole musical journey. As Dust Prophet is only getting started on these tracks.

Tracks such as Song 4, The High Capital, Hourglass and Bury Me Before Noon sees Dust Prophet bring more emphasis on melodic sounds that move into Post-Doom, Post-Rock or Post-Whatever gloomy creative splendour. The mood remains highly volatile with Dust Prophet opting for blunt force tactics when the heavy guitars appear and intense drumming becoming a more demonic presence before the album is out. Though, the album does become more calmer when the 70s Prog Rock inspired Instrumental moments appear on the later sections of the album.

Otto Kinzel puts in a spellbinding vocal performance here by blending the showmanship of Maynard James Keenan and Serj Tankian real life wisdom whilst essentially doing his own thing.

There is a lot to digest with One Last Look Upon The Sky and it's going to take listeners more than a few spins to understand all of the bleak themes and creative ideas of the album. The music is always addictive, brilliantly heavy and superbly engaging to entice folks back for more musical adventures with Dust Prophet.

Dust Prophet are a uniquely different band from the Doom/Stoner Metal Underground scene and that makes them such an exciting band to fully listen to on this album. The album benefits from a solid DIY based approach with the record having quite a solitary and distorted feel. Helped along by superb production values.

One Last Look Upon The Sky is a thought provoking and superbly entertaining album that offers a different style of Doom/Stoner Metal to really get excited about.

An Interview With Yuko Morino from BlackLab

Japanese Doomsters BlackLab have made a great impression on me with their last two acclaimed albums (Under The Strawberry Moon and Abyss) within the underground scene. Their heavy blend of Doom/Stoner Metal that is fueled by Punk Rock, Psych Rock and Sludge Rock vibes.

BlackLab which is made up of members Yuko Morino (Guitar/Vocals) and Chio Shirarishi (Drums) are one of the most refreshing bands to come from the Japanese Doom Metal Scene.

The band are about to release their excellent third album In A Bizarre Dream on August 19th 2022 via New Heavy Sounds.

I caught up with Yuko to discuss the formation of the band, evolution of their sound and making of their new album.

Read on for a great interview.

Hi there. How’s it going? Thanks for doing the interview.

I am the one who should thank you. I'm Yuko the singer/guitarist of BlackLab. We're so excited to be able to release our third album to the world.

For folks not in the know, can you advise how the band came together where it is today?

BlackLab was formed in 2012. When I first formed this band it was a three-piece band. One or two years after, the bassist left the band. But, instead of looking for a new bassist, I chose to play the both sounds of guitar and bass by myself. In this way, the band became a duo. We have been active in Osaka all the time. No records were released when it was a three-piece band.

How would you describe your music in your own words?

That question always makes me wonder. Umm, how about this? Rock music with hardcore punk, psych, occult rock, and stoner rock thrown into one pot, simmered in doom metal bouillon, and spiced with grunge.

We’re here to talk about your stunning new album In A Bizarre Dream. What can people expect for this album?

Our previous albums had a lot of raw, indie/lo-fi flavour. It can be said that this has succeeded in making a strong impression on people. I'm sure the next album will be a step up from that realm. This is mainly reflected in sound quality. Overall, this album is packed with the music we want to express right now, our current maximum performance skills, and our current maximum recording technology.

What is the new album all about and why did you call the album In A Bizarre Dream?

This album includes tracks in a wide variety of genres such as fast-paced hardcore punk and desert rock, heavy metalcore, mid-tempo doom metal, and abstract, lyrical alternative rock. However, there is a sense of unity in the atmosphere that covers all of them. Regarding album title "In A Bizarre Dream", like the previous work "Abyss", I saw the draft of the cover art and was inspired by it to come up with the title. It seemed to me that the seated old man in the center of the cover art of this album was having a strange dream. And I thought the word "bizarre" was more appropriate than "strange" for the effect added to the image. We love this title.

This is quite a different album compared to your previous albums. With perhaps being more Punk Rock and Experimental on this album. Was that the plan to write and record something different to your debut release?

The previous two albums contained gloomy and extremely long songs. I think this was the right choice for our musical expression at each point in time.

However, when planning the production of this album, I thought I'd increase the number of songs a little more and balance the whole to express the breadth of our music that is not limited to doom/stoner rock. I'm sure this attempt went well.

What were the recording sessions like for the new album? Was this a hard album to write and record for?

We and our label talked about seeking more sophistication in creating this album. We had to make a recording that would make it happen. Before going to recording, as a preparation, we had a thorough discussion with our recording engineer Jun, about the direction and method. And, we've never done pre-production recording before, but this time we did. This was very helpful. Due to these, the recording went smoothly.

The album was originally planned to be released before Desertfest in May 2022. According to that schedule, we had to finish the recording at the end of 2021. So I couldn't devote so much time to writing songs. But, COVID restrictions gave me time to create. (The Japanese restaurant I work for was forced to close for a total of three months during the COVID pandemic.)

And, we usually put no restrictions on the expression of music for the purpose of establishing it as an album. It's not difficult for me to write more and more songs if I can immerse myself in it. I want to thank to that we have been able to overcome some difficulties with the label that lets us act freely and the unity of our team.

Did you do anything different when recording album compared to your debut?

In recording this album, we focused on recording sound materials more clearly. In our previous works, I brought the guitar amp cabinet to the recording booth and recorded it like a live show, but this time, as many other bands, we put the guitar amp cabinet in a separate room from the recording booth. However, there is no change in the method of playing each instrument at the same time.

In addition to this, we tried improvisation recording for the first time, on a short instrumental track. Drummer Chia played the new unique percussion instrument called Steel Tongue Drum -Sazanami- on this track. The sound of that is also included in the interlude part of "Crows, Sparrows and Cats".

Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab) appears on this album with the track Crows, Sparrows and Cats. How did that collaboration come about. As I would never imagined that type of collaboration would work. Though it's a brilliant and magically diverse track.

Paul Cox from New Heavy Sounds made us the proposal for this collaboration. He used to run the Too Pure label in the 90's. As you know, Too Pure is an independent label that has released records such as Stereolab and P.J. Harvey. So he has a relationship with Laetitia. When I first heard the proposal, I was surprised by that crazy plan. But on the other hand I was very stoked to it.

Paul played our two previous albums to Laetitia and got approval for the collaboration. I was surprised that she agreed to sing. What an amazing thing. After that, I immediately started writing the song for the collaboration. I like Stereolab enough to make it part of my band's name, so I had no hesitation in incorporating the Krautrock elements of Stereolab into my own song. The melody and lyrics came to mind easily, and I finished writing the song in two or three days. I am proud that this is really a collaboration.

What was working with Laetitia Sadier like.

As soon as the song was written, we recorded a demo of it and sent it to her. We had planned to add her vocals to it after we had finally recorded the backing track. But she unexpectedly sent me a vocal track that matched the demo. Because of this, we had to record a backing track to match that vocal track. The tempo of the demo track was not constant, so wrote I the clicks on her vocals and then we played to the clicks. Surprisingly, this seems to have had a positive effect on us to concentrate on the performance. Anyway, when I first heard the vocals that she sent, I was moved by the power of her expression.

Your previous two albums impressed a lot of people within the Doom/ Stoner Rock underground scene. Did the response to that album surprise you both?

I think that's largely due to the work of New Heavy Sounds. We couldn't spread our music to the world just by ourselves. We are very grateful that New Heavy Sounds found us. Many people say that our music will be favored by overseas listeners. But we were surprised that the response from overseas fans was better than we had imagined.

New Heavy Sounds are releasing your new album again. It's great BlackLab are continuing that relationship once more. How did you become involved with that great label?

The beginning of this wonderful relationship was that we posted a link to bandcamp of our first self released album "Under The Strawberry Moon" on several doom / stoner metal communities of Facebook. Paul from New Heavy Sounds saw it and got interested and contacted us. He asked if he could play our song on his radio show Artrocker Radio. Of course we found no reason to refuse it. New Heavy Sounds then proposed a plan to release the remix album "Under The Strawberry Moon 2.0". This was the beginning to our great journey to the world.

Who writes all the lyrics for BlackLab. Is this a group effort or down to certain individuals?

The lyrics of all songs are written by me. As many other bands, we share the role of each. Writing English lyrics is a bit hard to me because I'm not very good at English. But I enjoy that. Google translation is my lifeline ha ha.

Who and what influenced your lyrics for the new album?

I usually write the vocal melody after the backing track is complete, and finally the lyrics. I wrote the songs for this album in the same way. It's not often that someone or something in particular influences my lyrics. My usual method is to derive the lyrics from images and scenes that come to mind from the written backtrack. Sometimes it's a scene from a movie or manga I've seen in the past, or it's my own past experience. For example, when I wrote the lyrics for "Monochrome Rainbow", I remembered the feeling I had when I passed out in the past (by concussion or something), and exaggerated my imagination from there.

The album cover is superb. Who designed the artwork and how much input did you have into the final design?

Thanks. However to be honest, I’m not sure if this album cover can make a good impression on people. Because it has a bit of a weird feel to it. But I think that attractive things usually have a bit of a weird vibe to them. This is, Ged the owner of New Heavy Sounds edited a photo taken by our sound engineer Jun. The basis of the idea is what I imagined.

Will you be touring and promoting the new album in the coming months at home or abroad?

We're going to have one album launch gig in September over here Osaka. And after that, two in October and two in November in Tokyo, Osaka and Gifu. There are no plans for overseas tours at the moment. I hope we could go on tour, around next year.

How did you get involved with music. Was it a particular album, group or artist that made you want to write and play your own music?

I started playing electric guitars when I was twenties. That's pretty late compared to a lot of musicians, isn't it? At the invitation of a work colleague, I started a copy band with her and her friends. We were playing songs from the Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The Beatles, Japanese indie bands, etc. At that time I was in charge of vocals in the band. Later the guitarist left the band and I became a guitarist. I continued that band for several years as a hobby.

A few years later, I formed a hardcore punk band with Chia and a bassist, and started band activities in earnest. I started writing songs in that band. That's when I was in my late twenties. I have known Chia for a very long time. When I was writing songs for that band, I was influenced a lot by Helmet, Faith No More, Soundgarden, etc. I still love these 90's iconic bands.

What is the current state of the Japanese Underground Rock/Metal scene. Do you have perform gigs on a regular basis and do you have a local scene that your actively involved with?

We only have regular gigs in Osaka, but there are bands with deep connections in Tokyo, Kyoto, Gifu and Shikoku, Kyushu region etc. They are mainly doom/stoner rock bands, but their genres are wide-ranging such as hardcore punk, new school metal, noise music, etc. They often invite us to play with them at their local gigs.

Both of players and listeners of Japanese underground Rock/Metal scene are aging. This may be true for other countries as well, though. Until the 90's, rock and metal were youth culture, but now it became to the middle-ages who were young people at the time stuff.

However, among the children whose parents are such Rock/Metal people, it seems that there are a few young people who are attracted to Rock/Metal because of their influence. Around me, there are fans and players in their 20s who really love metal music. We sometimes perform with them at live shows, so I think it would be nice if we could stimulate each other. Also, I feel that the Japanese Rock/Metal scene has become polarized into overground and underground, and that has gone from popular culture to more subculture in Japan.

But I think there is also the positive side of showbiz-like Rock/Metal music being weeded out and the underground scene being better formed. I think that the underground scene will be more active over here due to these things.

Thanks for doing this interview. Before you go, do you have anything to say to your fans currently out there?

Thanks for listening to me. Please forgive me if there're parts that are difficult to understand due to my imperfect English.

We want thank to folks who has supported us since our debut, folks who liked us seeing us for first time at Desertfest, and everyone who picks up this album and listens.

Please play this as loud as possible. Let's have a bizarre dream with us!

Words by Steve Howe and Yuko Morino
