Review

Second Sight is the new album from famed Instrumental Doom Metal Band – Clouds Taste Satanic. This is also the band’s 2nd album released this year. As the band released Evil Eye back in April 2019. This album continues with Post-Doom feeling heard on Evil Eye but with a more classic style of Doom Rock/Metal being played with it’s epic strands of Psych Rock, Space Rock and Stoner Metal.

Both songs last 21 minutes each and they’re both sprawling epics that bring back the heavy days of 70s Prog Rock and Spaced Out Jams. The music is quite dense and captivating with the band moving at their own steady pace. The swirling noises have a more dramatic effect and even allow Clouds Taste Satanic to operate with a more Post-Metallic delivery especially on the opening song Second Sight.

Clouds Taste Satanic show you how exciting Instrumental Rock/Music can be and move the genre into new exciting grounds that you just don’t get with other Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metal bands. Clouds Taste Satanic are clearly at the forefront of the genre now. The band know when to bring the heavy riffs to the party and when to hold back which helps build up an exciting atmosphere.

The band weave an intriguing story for this album despite the lack of vocals. With different sounds and grooves to show the next exciting part of the story the album wholly contains.

The band are more adventurous on this album with a more claustrophobic style of music being added on certain parts of the album. The hazy guitar tones are quite distorted in places and the album becomes a more gloomier experience. This is perhaps the band’s most experimental and diverse offering to date whilst still retaining their trademark sound.

Second Sight is an album not only you should listen to but one that you should respect and admire for doings things differently and succeeding on every level possible.

With some bands just content releasing one album this year, Clouds Taste Satanic had to stick a mighty UP YOURS to the world and release another thrilling and exciting album. It doesn’t get any better than this if you’re a fan of Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metal.

Clouds Taste Satanic - Evil Eye (Album Review)

Release date: April 30th 2019. Label: Self Released. Format: CD/DD/Vinyl

Evil Eye – Tracklisting

2.Pagan Worship 20:48

Review

Evil Eye is the 5th album from famed Doom Metal Instrumentalists – Clouds Taste Satanic- This time the band return with a heavier and more psychedelic offering compared to their earlier releases. The band offer two songs both running for about 20 minutes each. You can expect to hear the great heavy doomed out sounds that Clouds Taste Satanic are known for. However, expect a more rigid and progressive approach to their music with the band taking their time bring the heavy thunderous riffs to the party.

First song – Evil Eye – has a stripped back approach with the mood being very direct though this allows the band to slowly bring in many different layers of Psychedelic Doom Metal twinned with elements of Hard Rock, Classic Rock and Stoner Metal for a gloomy and out of body experience. This is the type of song that demands your full undivided attention. The slow-paced parts of the song are quite gloomy and sees the band play a more nuanced style of music.

Second song – Pagan Worship – lives up to it’s DOOM based title with the band creating some of their heaviest DOOM METAL riffs on this song. The song is deliriously fast-paced and angry throughout. Perhaps the most pissed off I’ve heard Clouds Taste Satanic been yet and that’s saying something to describe these guys. The down-tempo and gloomy riffs have a slightly depressing and darkened edge to them but that’s what makes this album so good. Clouds Taste Satanic are not afraid to venture into the darkest depths of DOOM METAL that you don’t hear from similar Instrumental Doom Metal bands.

Evil Eye is one of the best albums that Cloud Tastes Satanic have released to date. You would think after 5 albums the band would start to lose their hunger for creating new sounds. NOPE. Evil Eye feels like Clouds Taste Satanic are only getting started and the Doom/Stoner Metal audience is theirs for the taking.

The production is superb and allows Cloud Tastes Satanic music to be frighteningly too real at times. Overall, Clouds Taste Satanic have created a FUCKING MONSTER with this album.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Stoner Metallers KOOK return with their new album II and it’s another gloriously heavy ride that sees the band continue building their Psychedelic and Blues Rock sound they delivered on their acclaimed debut album. This album sees KOOK offer a heavier slice of Doom/Stoner Metal compared to their debut album and return with a more theatrical sound that suits them superbly well.

Taking influence from the last 45 years of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal but with a more Stoner Metal outlook on things. This album embraces KOOK’s love for all things Rock and Roll as the band try their hand at a wide range of different genres on this album. Troy’s vocals are beyond weird but in a good way. You should check out his epic vocals on the opening song – Escape Velocity. The heavy riffs and Troy’s vocals shouldn’t really work together but to KOOK’s credit they actually do and it’s always intriguing to hear.

Most of the songs on the album run past the 7 to 8 minute mark and that allows the band to experiment with their overall sound for the majority of the songs. The whole feel of the album is trippy and very surreal and may not be to everyone’s taste at first. However give the album a few spins and you will no doubt begin to enjoy the weirdness of it all.

Songs such as Chains, Left Behind, Frequency 8 and Chased By Monsters is where KOOK impress the most with their different take on Doom/Stoner Metal. This album can only be described as PURE CHAOS. As KOOK play by their own rules and there isn’t another band quite like them within the Doom/Stoner Metal scene.

II is a strange sounding album but it’s one that is wildly addictive and one that will hopefully allows KOOK to spread their weird as hell and demented Stoner Metal grooves to a wider audience as possible.

Review

Sigils is the new album from USA Progressive Doom/Sludge Rockers – Conjurer. The band released their excellent debut album about three or four years ago. This album sees the band return with a more experimental, gloomier and heavier approach. This all builds up to the band playing some heavy epic psychedelic sounds. The album moves away from the harsher sounds first heard on their debut album for a more melodic tone but Sigils still has it’s fair share of heavier parts.

Opening song – Will Of The Hag – is a song built on many different musical styles such as Doom, Sludge, Stoner, Psych, Post-Hardcore and Post-Metallic vibes that all have the same part to play and that’s creating the environment for Conjurer to impress people with. The vocals are a mixture of clean vocals and harsh growls and they complement each other surprisingly well.

Second song – Rusted Crown – opens with an industrial/sludge riff that soon moves into the standard Doom/Stoner Metal sound that sees Conjurer play a slower style of music compared to the opening song. You can hear elements of Kowloon Walled City and Mastodon on this song and ends up as one of the standout songs on the album.

Third song – Incarnate – has a more direct CONAN influence on this song as everything starts really slow before Conjurer gather pace and bring a wide range of heavy Doom based riffs to the party and the results are gloriously violent especially when the sombre psychedelic sounds appear.

Fourth song - At Last – is one of the darkest songs on the album. As Conjurer settle for a standard Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal song that fully comes alive thanks to the intense dark lyrics the band have written for this song. I had some issues with the vocals as they feel out of place at times but soon settle down for an exciting and action-packed finish.

The final three songs on the album Across The Void, Light Of Death and Servitor carries on the gloomy and almost apocalyptic tone of the album. Across The Void and Savour are perhaps the best songs held on the album. As these songs you how exciting Conjurer actually are when playing a more aggressive style of music.

The production on Sigils is superb with Conjurer’s music flowing naturally from beginning to end. The whole tone and atmosphere of Sigils is bleak but the band are not afraid to play a more hopeful style of music especially on Across The Void.

Sigils is an album that will hopefully see the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal community stand-up and take notice of Conjurer. As they’ve really the goods with Sigils and delivered a genuinely exciting and daring album.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

This is my first review that I’ve written since my brief retirement/hiatus that I announced earlier this year. Obviously it didn’t last long as I missed the scene too much and that’s thanks to bands such as GEEZER who drew me back to the Stoner Rock/Metal community. GEEZER have became one of my favourite bands from the scene over the last few years.

Their 2016 album was my favourite album of that year and it’s good to see GEEZER returning to that world with their excellent sounding new EP – Spiral Fires. Though this is perhaps the most Psychedelic Sounding version of GEEZER that we’ve heard so far. GEEZER have a new member in their ranks with Steve Markota joining the band on Drums & Percussion.

If you’re a fan of the Heavy Blues Rock sound that appeared on the last GEEZER album Psychoriffadelia then you’ll be happy to hear the band haven’t forgotten their Blues Rock roots on this EP as it’s the main driving force of the EP and one that allows GEEZER to play those dynamically heavy Psychedelic/Spaced Out sounds.

The EP only lasts for 25 minutes but GEEZER have put out a first rate release where all the songs are equally as good and strange as each other. Highlights for myself have to Spiral Fires Part 2 and the majestic sounding Charley Reefer.

Apparently there will be a new GEEZER album later this year. If the album is anything as good as Spiral Fires then GEEZER could have another epic sounding album on their hands and I for one will be counting down the days for it’s release.

Spiral Fires production is excellent which isn’t surprising since it’s been handled by GEEZER’s very own Pat Harrington who knows a thing or two on making records sound so good.

Overall, GEEZER have released another superb EP to their already highly impressive back catalogue and one that shows the Stoner Rock community why GEEZER are one of our most important bands working in the scene today.

Adam Scott: Electric bass guitars; acoustic guitar

Review

Thunderbird Divine is the new band that features ex-Wizard Eye member Erik Caplan in their ranks. The band is named after the song that appeared on Wizard Eye’s last album. This is a different beast to Wizard Eye. As Thunderbird Divine play a heavier style of Psychedelic Spaced Out Doom/Stoner Rock. Though the band aren’t afraid to lay down some thundering Sludge Metal grooves.

Thunderbird Divine debut album Magnasonic is perfectly named. As the band explore the many different sounds of levels of Psychedelic Stoner/Sludge Rock. The band add a real progressive groove to their music as they fully take flight on the album. The album contains a vintage sounding Fuzz Rock vibe with elements of classic Doom Rock/Metal.

The production has quite a raw and vintage feel to it with opening song – Qualified – almost seeing the band having an identity crisis with the different musical genres held on this song and that is a good thing. As the band play a different style of Psychedelic Stoner Rock. Lead vocalist Erik has a classic Hard Rock approach to his vocals and the results are excellent. The final stages of the song sees the band play a more Jam based sound where a high amount of epic spaced out riffs appear.

Second song – ‘Til Shilo – has a gloomier feel to it compared to the opening song and intense vocals as well. The song is still very psychedelic but more influenced by bands such as Black Sabbath. Thunderbird Divine still impress with the high voltage riffs and bombastic dual vocals the band have included here. This is one of the standout songs on the album.

Third song – Bummer Bridge – is a Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Rock number and one that has a more direct sound compared to the other songs on the album. The gloomy Blues Rock atmosphere is quite soulful and the band sure have fun on this song.

Fourth song – The Devil’s Hatband – is perhaps the centrepiece of the entire album with the band playing an epic eleven minute song that throws everything at you and leaves you within the realm of Psychedelic Spaced Out Rock. The song opens rather quietly before expanding into a heavier sound. The heavier riffs take time to appear but this is where Thunderbird Divine prove why they’re such a great band in their own right. The mixture of classic rock sounds against the modern heavier progressive grooves keeps you entertained from the start.

Overall, Magnasonic is a thrilling and brilliantly loud album that entertains from start to finish. This is a great album to open the new year of heavy music with.

Review

Wasted Theory return with another round of Southern Rock/Metal blended with classic Stoner Rock sounds. Warlords Of The New Electric is an album that’s on far too short in my mind. As the band present you with an album that runs for 36 minutes or so. I would of loved a few more songs just to spend more time with this great band. However Wasted Theory maximize every second with heavy powerful sounds that sees them drawing influences from the NOLA scene, Thin Lizzy and Orange Goblin.

The music is fast-paced and with a good old fashioned Classic/Hard Rock energy with the band switching from modern Stoner Rock/Metal grooves and top-notch Thin Lizzy classic guitar riffage. The album can be very psychedelic at times with opening song – Rawhide Hellride – having a combination of NOLA riffs, Southern Rock and Swampedelic epic guitar jams. Wasted Theory are a very tight unit on Warlords Of The New Electric proves that theory right with the band not wasting a single riff.

Songs such as Drug Buzzard, Bongronaut and The Son of a Son of A Bitch – only embrace the Swampedelic/Southern Rock sounds further but with a great sense of humour as well especially on The Son of Son of A Bitch.

I have to say that I’ve been disappointed by a lot of Southern Rock/Metal albums over the last few years but Wasted Theory have restored my faith in that genre of music. As this album is so damn catchy with highly infectious vocals and lyrics to match.

Another highlight of the album is how Wasted Theory stick to a winning formula and never decide to change directions by fusing different elements of music just for the hell of it. Wasted Theory impress even more on the second half of the album with Bastard County, Heavy Bite and Doomslut Rodeo. As the band carries on the wicked sense of humour spliced throughout the album.

The production is stunning with Wasted Theory putting in an assured and highly confident performance. I don’t think the band have ever sounded this good or even this HEAVY. And that’s saying something for Wasted Theory. As the band always release quality sounding albums.

Warlords Of The New Electric is Wasted Theory’s best album to date and one that will only enhance their well deserved reputation within the Stoner Rock/Metal scene as one of the best bands currently around today.

Review

Progression is the key for Doom Metallers - Spirit Division - who return after a two year absence with their epic new album - Forgotten Planet. Spirit Division have decided to give their music an almost trippy makeover as the album is way more psychedelic compared to previous albums. The album is full of trippy moments that leave you wondering what has happened to the Spirit Division from previous albums.

I'm not complaining as I feel Spirit Division have not only progressed as musicians but also songwriters as well. The lyrical content is perhaps the band's most mature offering to date. Spirit Division still play their familiar vintage Doom Metal sounds but the music is just way more out there.

Opening track - Forgotten Planet - is an instrumental psychedelic doom and spaced out offering with the band letting the listener getting used to their new sound.

Second song - Nothing To Be Missed - offers fans the best of both worlds. With Spirit Division playing their classic old-school Doom/Stoner Metal sound but with the focus on the more psychedelic element they've added to this album. Spirit Division is really hard to categorize on this album as they start to add different strands of Classic Heavy Metal sounds. The vocals are top-notch from both Chris and Andy.

The next few tracks: River Rising, The Light That Shines (When All Must Die) and Seeking The Crow Witch, offer perhaps some of the best moments on the album. With the music and vocals being a cut above the rest. The switching from different musical genres will leave you wanting more. The swirling psychedelic and spaced out moments immersed with the gloomy atmosphere shouldn't really work but Spirit Division show real vision and talent in keep everything flowing naturally.

The production on Forgotten Planet is quite adventurous in places. As the overall feel of the album can be quite vintage in parts and super modern in other parts of the album. The vocals on the album have a slightly creepy feel and that keeps with the tone of the entire album.

The second half of the album sees the band more settled with their new musical surroundings with songs such as Behemoth, Solitude and King Of Scars being the heaviest and meanest held on the entire album. Forgotten Planet is a thrilling and highly original sounding album that will have long-time fans extremely happy and even help gain a wider recognition.

NEWS: When The Deadbolt Breaks Reveal New Album Details And Teaser Video

WHEN THE DEADBOLT BREAKS partner with Sliptrick Records to release upcoming 2018 album 'Angels Are Weeping... God Has Abandoned...'; Reveal album video teaser

Longtime psychedelic doom metallists When The Deadbolt Breaks joined with Sliptrick Records to release their upcoming full-length album "Angels Are Weeping... God Has Abandoned..." on CD later on in 2018.

With nearly 15 years and five albums under their dark belts, this Eastern Connecticut trio - Aaron Lewis (guitars, vocals), Mike Parkyn (bass, vocals), and Randall Dumas (drums) - has completed recording and mastering on their sixth release. Finalizing the details for the new CD to be released by Sliptrick Records, 'Angels Are Weeping... God Has Abandoned...' is due out later in 2018.

When The Deadbolt Breaks on Sliptrick Records: https://sliptrickrecords.com/when-the-deadbolt-breaks/

The physical CD release date should coincide with digital availability through various streaming outlets. Plans are in the early stages to also have an accompanying vinyl press for the new release.

Hear a taste of terror with this tantalizing introduction to what happens When The Deadbolt Breaks...

WHEN THE DEADBOLT BREAKS is:

Aaron Lewis – Guitars, Vocals
Mike Parkyn – Bass, Backing Vocals
Randall Dumas – Drums

BIO:

A vision of Doom…

When the Deadbolt Breaks... In a flash of lightning, the god ignites a smoke and takes a hollow inhale of Autumn wind from smoky leaf and ash. Its deep sigh exhales thunder across a pitch sky, rolling with a turn of head into the vast emptiness of a torn heart. A second strike of light cracks with a triggered hammer. It is done. The god no longer watches. Justice rips the assailant’s soul, just as breath from unobserved faith, yanking wretched petals from thorny stems to fall across the threshold of her face.

The soundtrack to the demise of righteousness and the retort of a broken heart. When the Deadbolt Breaks began in the mind of Aaron Lewis while still a member of stoner rock icons Cable. Originally designed to be an exclusively emotional outlet for personal sanity, Aaron brought in musicians and friends to assist and enhance the recordings. With no boundaries or specific styles to restrict it, a ferocious engine fed on bitter revenge was driven by their skill and passion.

Less than a year later, their debut album "In the Ruins, No Light Shall Shine" was completed in December 2005, and released by Spare Change Records in May 2006. A new line up was formed later that year, and Spare Change Records teamed with PsycheDOOMelic Records to release the band’s sophomore release, a split CD with NY sludge gods, Negative Reaction. When the Deadbolt Breakstoured through seven states in support of the two releases

In 2008, they began recording "The Last Day of Sun", their third album contains 11 songs, spanning almost two hours and two discs of the heaviest, open, and sonically diverse music they had done to date. In 2010, When the Deadbolt Breaks decided to avoid any label angst and, in true DIY fashion, self-released the album as a free digital download. Handling all their own promotion, the release sparked off a wildfire of attention in the heavy music underground world.

Prior to a tour with doom giants Elder in 2012, the band took three days (and as many cases of wine) to write and record their second album “Drifting Toward the Edge of the Earth”. Finishing it after the tour, they released the double CD to critical acclaim in 2013, via EarOne Productions Records.

Now with a steady, heavy lineup of Randall Dumas on drums, Mike Parkyn on bass and Aaron on vocals and guitar, the band moved on to their next adventures. Under the writing and art direction of Aaron, they completed two epic music video productions in 2013 and 2015. Early 2016 found them recording their fifth record, an EP “Until it All Collides”, released on Salt of the Earth Records and supported by a subsequent tour. When The Deadbolt Break’s live show has become a monster of its own, with sheer volume and intensity transporting the viewer to another dimension.

In 2018, their sixth record, “Angels Are Weeping… God Has Abandoned…” finds its CD release through Sliptrick Records later this year. A vinyl format release is also in the planning stages.
