Review

Le Monde Des Tracteurs Geants is the third full length album from Psych Stoner Rockers PAMPS! Les Pamplemousses Ethyliques (PLPE) and this is my first exposure to the band. The band play a long drawn out and cinematic style of Stoner Rock that blends Psych, Space Rock, Desert Rock and Prog Rock with other influences ranging from Middle Eastern grooves and full on film soundtrack dynamics appearing on this record alone.

The record is quite epic in scope that runs for over an hour spread across five tracks which all have their own unique flavour and style of Stoner Rock. The record is very overblown, melodramatic and quite long but however this all works to the band’s great advantage. As they create some groundbreaking instrumental passages that are just jaw-dropping to listen to. There’s a fine amount of Post-Rock based melodies before PLPE aims for a heavier, disjointed and fractured sound that’s quite deafening at times. 

Imagine a more spaced out and jazzed up version of EARTHLESS and MONKEY3 then that’s what you’ll experience with PLPE. All of the musicians are absolute geniuses with the amount of different music they conjure up within the outstanding opening track O Simon Diaz (Ianovitch) which demonstrates what to expect for this mammoth album. 

This is mostly an instrumental rock album with some vocals and soundbytes being added along the way but for the majority PLPE are happy to let their music do the talking. They also have an unhealthy obsession using feedback loops, trippy sound effects and distorted amplifier movements within their music which gives a highly unorthodox Doom Rock sound creeping out from the speakers. 

Sometimes the music also feels completely out of control which happens within regular stages of the record as PLPE explore that Jazz Rock and Experimental sound to generate new areas of Heavy Psychedelic and Sonic tapestries to explore, dismantle and re-create in their own great creative image. The album does feel like one extended album broken down into individual chapters which allows a different musical and creative perspective to take the limelight on tracks such as Le Monde Des Tracteurs Geants, Octave ou Attention a la Mousse and Joachim ou Prends l'apparence du Duc. 

The levels of FUZZ is expertly timed with PLPE adding a cautious modern day sound which can be quite romantic within some of the closing seconds of individual tracks. This has been a hard album to review as Le Monde Des Tracteurs Geants conveys many different moods that’s quite hard to describe especially within the realm of Instrumental Rock music. Though, I can’t state how brilliantly breathtaking and emotionally engaging the whole record is. The sheer vision that the band have applied to this record is nothing short of amazing within the intricate sounds that’s played throughout the album. 

Le Monde Des Tracteurs Geants is one of the most warm hearted and most emotionally engaging records I’ve heard in quite some time. There’s not one sign of malice as PAMPS! Les Pamplemousses Ethyliques make everyone feel welcome to join with their massive sounding record.

Psych/Prog/Stoner Rockers Wheel Of Smoke return after a seven year absence by releasing their live album Live At Libertad 2026. The record which was recorded on 05th April 2026 at café libertad in Leuven, Belgium sees the band play a collection of their most well known tracks built up across their excellent discography. If you’re new to Wheel Of Smoke’s world then the band plays a great style of Psych Rock, Space Rock, Prog Rock, Stoner Rock and other stellar sounds from the area of Classic Rock.

This record has a stripped back atmosphere which captures the band perfectly in a raw vibrant “LIVE” setting and you can tell that very minimal work was done in the recording studio / behind the scenes for this album. There are a lot of rough sounding moments captured on this record which only adds to the overall effect as it allows the listener to be part of the action. This is quite an involving and long drawn out album but it’s never boring with Wheel Of Smoke changing their musical style and delivery through various stages of the album.

There’s a sublime “Jam based” energy to Wheel Of Smoke of how they delve into the area of Sixties and Seventies Psych Rock then adding levels of modern Stoner Rock heaviness when you least expect this. The majority of the tracks are powered by an expressive style of Instrumental Rock with influences such as Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Earthless and The Doors can be heard for the best sounding moments on the album.

Wheel Of Smoke are quite hard to describe as they have a "chameleon" approach to their music with some wonderful Spaced Out And Ambient effects emitting from the vastness of the actual venue itself. The music can be quite “Jazzy” and “Experimental” in places which allows the grounded Progressive and Post-Rock elements to hold everything together on tracks such as: Degeneration, Beamed, On A Wave, Sun Go Down, The Pilgrim and Song Of Saturn.

Live At Libertad 2026 is quite an involving album with Wheel Of Smoke delivering a highly engaging seventy five minute live album where there’s plenty of fantastic instrumental solos to lose yourself in. Wheel Of Smoke fully commit themselves to their musical craft on this album and their entire performance can only be described as a “masterclass of instrumental rock music”. 

It’s great to see Wheel Of Smoke back releasing new albums and I’m hoping they will be releasing new music in the very near future as they’ve been sorely missed. This album is proof of that and I’m hoping the underground scene welcomes the band back with open arms and help promote this great live album like their lives depended on it.

Review

Psych Stoner Rockers Rainbow Bridge have made the bold decision to release an instrumental record for their fourth album Soundtrack Of A Silent Land. The band state this is an imaginary soundtrack of some sort with Rainbow Bridge conjuring up vivid sounds such as exquisite Navajo vocals that open and close the album with. There’s some excellent Psychedelic and Fuzzed Up musical expression that moves into areas of distorted heaviness which appear very early on within the outstanding opening track A Silent Land.

Rainbow Bridge operate in the same creative capacity as bands such as Earthless, Yawning Man, and Colour Haze though their subtle blend of Heavy Psych, Stoner Rock, Space Rock and Blues Rock surroundings are never too far behind. This record is one more of SONIC EXPLORATION and seeing Rainbow Bridge create a different style of music that maybe quite “ALIEN” to them at first without the vocal dynamics heard on previous records.

The sound has a relentless and freakish energy which sees Rainbow Bridge play Sixties Heavy Psychedelic beats against classic Nineties Desert/Stoner Rock passages. With a small reliance on distorted Prog Rock that can be quite DRONE based at times, there is a sense of wonder and adventure when the band play an unexpected style of Instrumental music that can be quite more “METALLIC” in places. 

With a wide array of different Psych, Post-Rock and Prog Rock instrumental passages that can be quite laid back before the aggressive energy of Rainbow Bridge that usually takes complete control especially on tracks such as Gaba, Hugh The Cactus and Goats Everywhere allowing the first half of the record play out in exciting fashion. 

The second half of Soundtrack Of A Silent Land continues to build on the exciting promise that Rainbow Bridge have masterfully delivered with more eerie Progressive leaning Psychedelic jams with some epic screeching guitars being played along the way. There are a lot more FREAK OUT moments on this record compared to other Instrumental Stoner Rock albums which allows an adventurous style of music to fully form and develop into high levels of deafening passages.

Standout tracks from the second half of the album are Sunrise Moon and A Loving Son which retains a sense of urgency for Rainbow Bridge to get straight down to business in playing the heaviest, freshest and highly original musical passages contained on the whole album. The mood can be quiet, sullen, moody, heavy and aggressive on different stages of the whole record. 

Soundtrack Of A Silent Land is an absolute joy to fully experience with the raw sounding production values adding a dynamic GARAGE ROCK or GENERATOR PARTY energy to the whole record. Rainbow Bridge have been going as a band since 2006 but they’ve really started to find their own unique voice on their last couple of records and prove why they’re another excellent band to check out from the Italian Heavy Rock scene.

This is a superbly entertaining record which takes a lot of BOLD creative choices and becomes an even better record for it when everything is said and done. 

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Psychedelic/Space/Stoner Rockers Psyrup return with their new album El Conejo. The album has quite a dramatic science fiction feel with Psyrup focusing upon playing a more “Out There” style of Psychedelic Journey with moments of Hard Rock, Doom and Prog Rock sounds. Psyrup adds warped sound effects to their music with the band influenced by bands such as Deep Purple, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath whilst keeping everything stuck in a permanent 1970’s sounding time loop within the whole time frame of the album.

El Conejo has a fractured story line where things don’t make sense with the band adding multiple narratives which comes into play early on within the excellent two opening tracks of Time Traveller and Ball Of Energy. Lead vocalist Ryan has a very cool way of delivering heavy digitised vocals and having an out of world feeling which allows Psyrup playing classic style of KrautRock and Space Rock for a more dramatic flow. The sound could be considered Classic Rock with it’s outbursts of “Retro” sounds that soon manifest into more Doom and Blues Rock based pastures which once again allows the album to be very hard to categorise at times.

Third Track The Rabbit has a more laid-back Funk Driven score with some trippy soulful blues sounds which has a certain 60’s/70’s “kitsch” energy to it which showcases another cool style for Psyrup to entice and impress listeners with.

Fourth track The Ghostship Lantern goes full on Pink Floyd with it’s Psychedelic tendencies and it’s groovy off-kilter Poppy vocals and lyrics still evolving into a more classic style of Doom Rock with a loving nod to The Beatles in places. The Electronic beats offer a more sinister sound on the later stages of the track. 

The final two tracks The Motheroot and Interstellar Freedom & The Wayward Homunculus are best described as 1970’s Hard Rock/Doom/Blues Rock flair. This part of the album is where Psyrup operates with a more dynamically powerful Funk Rock/Jam Rock swagger which contains some of the album's standout instrumental grooves.

El Conejo is not your standard Psychedelic Stoner Rock record with Psyrup always thinking outside of the box and taking the listener on a wild exuberant ride which moves across the boundaries of Classic Hard Rock. The end result is a highly satisfying record that’s boosted by superb production values throughout which allows Psyrup to deliver a quality sounding album which will impress you with its delicious trippy sounds.

Review

Psych Stoner Rockers Black Helium with their third full length album Um and it sees this hugely talented Power Trio venture into darker areas of Space Rock, Sludge Rock and a healthy dose of Drone Rock. The music continues Black Helium's love affair with extended Psychedelic passages and Spaced Out vortexes which all manifest into Extended Freaky Guitar Jamming sessions and jazzy drumming throughout the album.

Opening song Another Heaven is full of glitches, Ambient Noises and Krautrock Sonic sounds with Black Helium creating Psych Stoner Rock jams around this weird and wonderful sound. Inspired by the freakedelic Psych/Space Rock Movement from the 1960's and 1970s with a thrilling modern day Drone/Sludge Rock undergroove appearing. The vocals have a Drone/Space Rock feel to them with effective lyrics setting up an almost trans-dimensional feel. The song truly comes its own original "thing" when Black Helium move to a heavier and muscular style of Sludgy based sound with small flashes of Sonic Experimentation.

Second song I Saw God goes full-on Psychedelic Paranoia with bold creative statements happening with the lyrics. The song feels it was written to be thought-provoking in places with the song touching upon individuals being in personal contact with the almighty himself through the power of LSD. Though, I could be reading too much into the lyrical content despite my atheist beliefs. The music however is structured beautifully with Black Helium blending melodic grooves with a free-flowing Krautrock/Stoner hybrid sound that once again has a Jazzy and Classic Psych Rock flow to it all. Flirting between hopeful 1960's Psych/Power-Pop grooves and the darker WEEDIAN sounds that remain quietly confident in the background when Black Helium need to call upon a heavier style of music. 

Third song Dungeon Head is more of an experimental interlude with solitary drums and lush moments of gloomy Psychedelic sounds. More Ambient driven but still an interesting style of music with the vocals being quite solitary and distinctive. Black Helium use the two and half minutes run time to their advantage and bring a more emotional style of "Weirdo Rock" to a satisfactory conclusion.

Fourth song Summer Of Hair is another slice of fantastical Psych/Stoner/Krautrock exploration into the darker depths of the music levels they create and play here. More Drone based with Electronica beats working surprisingly well. This song is perhaps the most "riff-centric" out of the whole album and perhaps with the fastest creative flow. As Black Helium slowly built up their ARSENAL of different Psych/Space Rock sounds for a more aggressive style of music that easily encompasses the last 40 years of the UK Hard Rock scene to the band's creative advantage. 

Firth song The Keys To Red Skeleton's House (I Open The Door) is a mind-expanding fifteen minutes plus epic where Black Helium include everything but the kitchen sink for this album. It's easily their most ambitious track yet with the band fully getting into the Prog Rock world. Black Helium play strands of Psych Rock and Stoner Rock with the swirling Space Rock rhythms allowing Black Helium to generate a more Doom based feeling to the album. There's a lot to take in with this song but it remains the album's standout track and perhaps the best song the band have written to date. The song's best moments are the sullen Ambient Noises and the laid-back sounds turning into heavier slabs of Hard Rock/Metal. The song also features great vocal performances from both Beck and Stuart with a thunderous drumming performance courtesy of Diogo.

Um is quite a different record from Black Helium and feels tonally different from their previous releases. With first rate production values, Black Helium have offered the Stoner Rock world their best and perhaps craziest release to date. This allows Black Helium to be one of the best Psychedelic Rock bands the UK underground scene has to offer. It's great to see Black Helium teaming up with Riot Season Records once again. 

Um is a huge sounding album and Black Helium deserves to gain a wider audience with this album. Simply unmissable entertainment from start to finish.

Producer and guitarist Alessandro Santori says about the album:

"Cosmic Evoked Potentials is a rite of passage, the end of a circle and already blooming of another.
Surely our most instinctive effort so far. We went back to our roots of live recording, this time instead of a stage we chose an old mansion from late '1700 outside Rome. The atmosphere there was so charming and stimulating that 13 minutes of a 45 min long improvisation ended up in the album. We wanted the dynamics and moods of the parts to be the most important thing, taking more time than our usual developing the "story" of the songs."

Review

Italian Psych/Blues/Stoner Rockers Rainbow Bridge present their first ever live album Live at La Cittadella degli Artistri. Recorded in January 2022, the album sees Rainbow Bridge playing for over 70 minutes with their finely tuned and highly energetic blend of Psych Rock, Blues Rock and Stoner Rock. The band have been doing this for a long time now since 2010 I believe but could be even longer.

Rainbow Bridge excel in playing 60's Psych Stoner Rock and 70's Classic Hard Rock with a rich tapestry of 90's based Stoner Rock extended jams that bring back memories of Earthless. The music is bang on point with the band playing a hazy style of instrumental guitar solos and jam based rock. There is a distinctive Power Trio flavour to Rainbow Bridge and their music is quite rich and varied in sound which you can hear in the two part opening track of Intro/The Storm Is Over.

Intro is basically an extended jam for the band to warm up the audience with. A great track and fantastic musical performance from the band. 

Second part of the first track The Storm Is Over has influences diverse as The Who, Free and Led Zepp especially with the vocals. The soaring 60's swinging based attitude is excellent and even allows Rainbow Bridge the opportunity to play some mighty fine LOUD grooves along the way.

With this being a live album, the audience is there in the background though it's hard to hear them at times but you can hear instances of the audience being superbly entertained. The sound and production of the record is super crisp from start to finish. The album is packed full of wonderfully different Stoner Rock vibes with a fine approach in Classic Hard Rock that shines through on tracks such as: Lama, Words, I'm Just A Man, No More I'll Be Back and Rainbow Bridge/Dusty.

Most of the songs run between 6 mins to 12 mins in length. Well the guys all play extended solos on nearly every song. If you dig legendary artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher then Rainbow Bridge will impress you with their musical creativity especially when the Psychedelic and Blues based moments appear. 

I do admire the vast amounts of different styles that Rainbow Bridge plays on this live album. This allows the album to be more adventurous compared to other live albums I've heard recently. You don't have to be a fan of Rainbow Bridge to enjoy the album. You just need to be a fan of Live Albums and good music in general. 

Live at La Cittadella degli Artistri is another fine release from Rainbow Bridge and showcases a great band from the underground Italian Stoner Rock scene you may not have come across. Do yourself a favour and listen to this album now. This album is a MIGHTY FINE PSYCHEDELIC TRIP!!!

Not From 1969 is the tenth album from Aussie Psych Stoner Rockers Frozen Planet…1969 and it’s the first album I’ve ever reviewed by them. That’s not to say I’m a total outsider to the band’s weird, trippy and sometimes surreal world. I’m not. I’m a fan of Frozen Planet….1969 and dig their music a great deal though I’m a few albums out of sync as they’re quite prolific. With that being said I enjoyed Not From 1969 immensely.

A record spread across three lengthy tracks which sees the band explore their Progressive bound Space/Stoner Rock through extended jams and psychedelic soundscapes. The album is quite loud and experimental with the band showing their true creative worth. There’s a 60’s and 70’s identity running throughout this album and if you dig music such as HAWKWIND and EARTHLESS then this will be your extended JAM.

The album is quite jazzy in places and has a cool Surf Rock groove that you can hear in the excellent opening song Diamond Dust. Sprinkle some Middle Eastern vibes and this is perhaps the most far-out that Frozen Planet….1969 have been in quite some time. The song lasts over ten minutes and there’s a lot to digest on this track but it’s a superbly played song from start to finish.

The remaining two songs Strangelands and Dissolver follow the same creative path with even weirder extended jams coming into play and dark flashes of Psychedelic Stoner Rock. The final song Dissolver is on for a mouth-watering twenty seven minutes plus and Frozen Planet….1969 live upto the WILD EXCESS OF THE ROCK & ROLL LIFESTYLE on this song. Mind-blowing and Over The Top in equal measure this is one of the best musical compositions I’ve heard from the band yet and shows a different side to the band.

Overall, Not From 1969 lives on the right side of 60’s Psychedelic Rock before head-diving into the darker surroundings of 70’s based Space Rock/Stoner Rock for an album that builds up to a thrilling climax and leaves you wanting more.
