Review

Instrumental Doomsters L’IRA DEL BACCANO  return after a three year absence with The Praise Of Folly which is another huge sounding SONIC and SPACED OUT expedition into the vast COSMOS. The record is perhaps L’IRA DEL BACCANO’s (LDB) most grounded album to date with the band adding strands of Shoegaze and Post-Rock into the music. They still offer their trademark Space Rock and Doomed Out sound that’s been inspired by the likes of Black Sabbath, Hawkwind and Pink Floyd. L’IRA DEL BACCANO play with a real sense of urgency to this album which allows them to play some of the most direct and fast-paced sounds of their musical career.

The album opens up with the two part title track for The Praise Of Folly Part 1 / Part with doomedelic melodies developing into a great mix of synths, ambient sounds, post-rock dynamics and a haunting cinematic score that’s hidden behind a scorching Stoner Rock/Metal rhythm. Echoes of the band’s musical past and creative legacy feels like it’s being reevaluated and reinvented for a modern audience.

As I can hear brief moments from their previous records being given a more soulful and heavier purpose with L’IRA DEL BACCANO moving ever so closely to their Psych and Space Rock roots. The welcome use of Shoegaze and Post-Rock textures is another wonderful touch with the music having a real dramatic edge with L’IRA DEL BACCANO still delivering a thrilling aspect of Instrumental Rock/Metal.

L’IRA DEL BACCANO play a fantastic “QUIET vs HEAVY” and “LIGHT vs DARK” aspect into their music where you can hear influences as diverse as PELICAN and RUSSIAN CIRCLES within the quieter moments with some epic KRAUTROCK moments being delivered throughout the whole album.

The other two tracks of Stigma and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead allow L’IRA DEL BACCANO to add a cinematic and psychedelic Storytelling edge into their music whilst creating sublime instrumental soundscapes that are equally progressive and uplifting at the same time. The second half of the album has a more aggressive sludgier tone to add a level of grittiness whilst keeping in line with L’IRA DEL BACCANO’s highly creative and majestic vision. The backdrop is filled with hallucinogenic melodies and surreal soundscapes that will blow your entire mind.

The production values are brilliantly realised with the album having a slight “LIVE RECORDING” aspect which is quite ironic since their 2007 classic debut album Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII from 2007 was an actual live album which introduced me to this amazing band. You’ll be surprised by the musical journey that L’IRA DEL BACCANO will take you upon with The Praise Of Folly.

The Praise Of Folly is another masterful record from L’IRA DEL BACCANO and might be my favourite album of theirs yet. This album will no doubt firmly establish the guys as perhaps one of the finest Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metal bands from the underground scene of the modern day age.

The Band says:

" The Praise of Folly part1 is the first of a two chapters, 21 minutes long ,composition inspired by Erasmus of Rotterdam essay Morie Encomium. It's a one-way journey through what we imagined could be the various representations of folly — from its visionary aspect to anger, but also irony and lightness in facing life. The entire song has been recorded live in one, continuous passage for three times and then we decided wich one had the best vibe as a whole, no comping between takes to chase perfection for each section of the song. We wanted to keep the performance and general sound of the main intruments as "real" and LIVE as possible. Then we added some layers to emphasize some passages"

Review

Tempus Deorum is a new split album featuring the talents of Italian Spaced Out Doom Riff Wizards L’IRA DEL BACCANO and Netherlands Doom/Stoner Rockers YAMA. This is YAMA’s first batch of new material in eleven years since the band reformed in 2024. Both bands operate on different ends of the Doom Metal spectrum but are united within their core belief of creating HEAVY GROOVES that have a subtle Space Rock energy to them. Both bands get the perfect opportunity to showcase their musical talents on this epic split release.

Up first is L’IRA DEL BACCANO with their classic track Tempus 25 (Sempiternal Rapture) which is a slightly modified version of the original track Tempus Inane Flago, Requiem Spatiumque Furori which appeared on their classic 2007 Live Album Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII which was actually one of the first albums I ever reviewed when I created The Sludgelord blog back in March 2011. So, this track feels like reconnecting with an old friend that you haven’t seen for a very long time.

The song still feels vital and has a modern day sound compared to the original. This is perhaps L’IRA DEL BACCANO’s most famous track with the band playing a spellbinding mix of Psych Rock, Doom Metal, Space Rock and Stoner Metal that’s held together by a cinematic Progressive Rock energy. This version is more stripped back and feels like it’s been built from the ground up with a haunting DRONE aspect which wasn’t heard within the original. The song starts off quietly but slowly transforms into different and heavier DOOMEDELIC passages within its epic nineteen minutes runtime. The instrumental grooves are played to perfection with L’IRA DEL BACCANO once again proving why they’re one of the most essential bands to come out from the Italian Doom/Stoner Metal scene.

Yama are up next with their side of the split record where they offer three new tracks that have a heavier riffier approach compared to L’IRA DEL BACCANO. With flashes of a riff-centric based sound that dives head into a Prog Rock direction compared to their 2014 debut album Ananta. The opening track Wish To Go Under sees Yama have a heavier Progressive Sludge sound with moments of Thrash based energy being played at a thrilling fast pace. The song is quite vivid with flashes of Psychedelic Grooves coming from all corners and angles with Alex Schenkels vocals perfectly leading the HEAVY METAL charge throughout.

The second track from Yama, The Absolute is one built on distorted rhythms and fractured melodies which have a harsh Drone sound slowly emitting from the speakers with the band wisely taking their time in bringing a heavier DOOM/SLUDGE atmosphere which is way heavier than you initially expect. The song can be quite THEATRICAL with Yama using the many ploys of HEAVY METAL dynamics to create the standout track of their batch of songs. The final stages of The Absolute allows Yama to demonstrate a new found style of Progressive Heaviness which results in some splendid instrumental grooves to lose yourself in.

The final track from Yama, Naraka is a stunning Psych/Doom/Stoner Metal based track with the band creating sounds that could have easily fitted on their excellent debut album but this has a more modern sound. As Yama merges Post-Stoner / Post-Doom surroundings with that cinematic sound being applied to a heavier Progressive attitude which ends the song on a triumphant note. I’m hoping that Yama will have more new material to be released in the future, as on this evidence alone, they have sorely been missed.

Tempus Deorum is a must have split-record featuring two great bands that allows them the perfect opportunity to gain a considerable following within their respective genres.

Exclusive Twin Single Premiere Of L'Ira Del Baccano Single Tempus 25 and YAMA Single Naraka

Artwork by Michele Carnielli

Italian avant-garde record label Subsound Records are releasing the epic split release from Roman Heavy Psych/Prog quartet L'IRA DEL BACCANO and Dutch Doom Rockers YAMA. The record ‘Tempus Deorum’ split album is set to release on March 28th 2025.

L'Ira Del Baccano fill the A side with a drawn-out 19-minute instrumental psych doom jam. You will feel the heaviness of doom, the psychedelia of an improvised jam and the precision of progressive rock.

On the B side, Yama bring some of their doomiest tracks to the table and experiment with psychedelic drone elements.

We're excited to premiere Tempus 25 (Single Edit) by L'Ira Del Baccano and Naraka by Yama to get you into the mood for this exciting split album release thanks to the cool folks over at Shake Promotion PR.

L’Ira Del Baccano about their single (their song’s edit):

"A fragment extracted from a unique and complex 19-minute composition in which L’IRA DEL BACCANO explores all the facets of its instrumental expression. But the true journey will be the full version on the album Tempus Deorum."

Yama about their single "Naraka":

"‘Naraka’ represents hell in Vedic lore and is Yama’s abode. As a song it also brings home our band’s past and future. It's a heavy blues track, with a fierce doom metal punch. The final part of the track reflects the redemption that sinners (Narakas) achieve, after settling their ‘debt’. Something each one of us could long for."

Alessandro "Drughito" Santori From Psych/Doom/Stoner Rockers L'IRA DEL BACCANO - Favourite Albums Of 2023

2023 has been a very busy year for me on many levels. Lots of family related stuff to take care of, and as usual music helped me a lot. Listening to it and also interacting with talented musicians within the scene.

Obviously L'IRA DEL BACCANO released our new album back in March with Cosmic Evoked Potentials and a nice tour. Working for that on social media made me discover some new bands (for me) from the Stoner/Doom scene. With some releasing new music this year alone.

The following bands listed below are those I really enjoyed listening to while taking breaks from the stress of daily life. Some new discoveries and some "old friends".

This list isn't in a specific order and I decided to keep it at six. As otherwise too many would be on the list and I would probably forget some. Enjoy!!

TFNRSH - "TIEFENRAUSCH"

THE SPACELORDS - "NECTAR OF THE GODS"

THRONEHAMMER - "KINGSLAYER"

BUDDHA SENTENZA - "HIGH TECH LOW LIFE"

MOUNT GAMMARAY BURNS - "SEDIMENTS"

BISMUT - "AUSDAUER"

Review

Instrumental Psychedelic Doomsters L'IRA DEL BACCANO return with their new album of new material for the first time in six years with Cosmic Evoked Potentials. The band have taken on a broader Prog Rock sound compared to previous releases and perhaps become more focused on a trippy Psychedelic sound. L'IRA DEL BACCANO play a different multi-layered sound on this album that's helped along by Swirling Ambient Noises and Spaced Out Psychedelia.

If you can imagine members of RUSH, HAWKWIND and BLACK SABBATH joining forces then that's the best way to describe this album. The record is quite soulful and full of heavy progressive Doomed Out grooves which fully come into focus on the opening track The Strange Dream Of My Old Sun.

The song which is a ten minutes plus prog fuelled Doom/Stoner odyssey with L'IRA DEL BACCANO playing different levels of Psychedelic themes with a killer FUZZED OUT atmosphere. There's some cool areas of distortion being used on the track but it's the swirling Space Rock themes and Prog Rock attitude that allows L'IRA DEL BACCANO to be more melodic with their music. The creativity is impressive yet again as you think you've heard it all before with Instrumental Doom Metal but as with Clouds Taste Satanic, L'IRA DEL BACCANO find new exciting ways that brings a fresh unique sound and style to the genre.

Second song Genziana (Improvisation 42)* has a more world-weary and serious low-key attitude which allows the band to veer into areas of the Post-Whatever world with fascinating results. The song starts off slowly and moves at its own pace but that's a good thing as you'll begin to absorb the first-rate sounds the band have written for this track. Moving between the quieter themes or elements of their music, L'IRA DEL BACCANO slowly begin to play faster and heavier riffs that sees them play some of the best and most action-packed tracks on the album. This does feel like an ultimate jam session or riff-fest but this one has a sense of purpose especially when L'IRA DEL BACCANO go all out for a bold cinematic conclusion for the song.

The next part of the album sees L'IRA DEL BACCANO adapt a LESS IS MORE approach for the remaining three songs being more direct to the action though there's still a lot of cool PSYCHEDELIC and SPACED OUT music to get through.

Songs such as The Electric Resolution and Cosmic Evoked Potentials have the old-school L'IRA DEL BACCANO sound that I first heard on their 2008 landmark debut release. There's a lot of FUZZY guitars with a killer Prog Rock atmosphere with the band perhaps being more WEEDIAN driven on these two tracks. It is still L'IRA DEL BACCANO through and through with a catchy aggressive feel allowing the band the perfect opportunity to experiment or refine their own sound.

The final song Eclipse Omega runs under the three minutes mark and is more Post-Rock/Ambient driven to the rest of the album but it brings this album to an emotionally driven and satisfactory conclusion.

L'IRA DEL BACCANO put their hearts and souls into this release with stunning instrumental work and sublime SONIC sounds being heard throughout.

This is another masterful, brilliant and exquisite release from L'IRA DEL BACCANO that's helped along by first rate production values and some of the best SONIC experimentation you'll likely to hear this year.

Cosmic Evoked Potentials sees L'IRA DEL BACCANO moving away from their CULT UNDERGROUND STATUS to becoming one of the most important and essential bands of the Instrumental Doom Metal scene.

Producer and guitarist Alessandro Santori says about the album:

"Cosmic Evoked Potentials is a rite of passage, the end of a circle and already blooming of another.
Surely our most instinctive effort so far. We went back to our roots of live recording, this time instead of a stage we chose an old mansion from late '1700 outside Rome. The atmosphere there was so charming and stimulating that 13 minutes of a 45 min long improvisation ended up in the album. We wanted the dynamics and moods of the parts to be the most important thing, taking more time than our usual developing the "story" of the songs."

Review

Italian Doomedelic Instrumental Rockers L’Ira Del Baccano with a new live album Don’t Panic Sessions: Live At Psychedelic Network Festival 2019 which was recorded live in Germany. The album offers three of L’Ira Del Baccano’s finest tracks with the band bringing a more Progressive Doomed Out energy compared to their acclaimed previous live album Si Non Sedes iS ...LIVE which was originally released back in 2007 and reissued in 2018.

Don’t Panic Sessions is a forty six minute live album with the band playing their blend of heavy doomed out instrumental rock with Abilene being played first. This is the first time I’ve heard this song live and it’s a different and refreshing style to the studio original. With this song being more organic and perhaps even heavier. The trippy sound effects work really well on the live stage with L’Ira Del Baccano showcasing a Post-Rock or Post-Stoner flavour whilst being full on Instrumental Doom.

Up next is Volcano X13 and is my favourite track from this live performance as the band are bang on form here and play intense extended grooves and jams. Perhaps the heaviest part of the album and you can hear the audience in places which gives this album a true LIVE ALBUM feel. The Psychedelic energy and Space Rock themes are aggressive with a sense of calm when the band plays a slower style of music.

Tempus Inane 2019 is a reworking  is an edit version of their classic track Tempus Inane Flago,Requiem Spatiumque Furori from their 2007/2018 release  Si Non Sedes iS ...LIVE and remains one my favourite tracks from the band to this day. This is a great version that the band performed here and it’s three minutes longer than the original track. Running past the twenty one minutes mark. This song is one of the most adventurous tracks the band have ever written. Evoking the spirit of Hawkwind with the DOOMED out sounds of Black Sabbath. Maybe, I still prefer the original version but it’s always good to hear a different version of tracks such as this. Lush sounding Psychedelic moments work really well with the Spaced Rock elements with L’Ira Del Baccano putting in an accomplished live performance.

Don’t Panic Sessions: Live At Psychedelic Network Festival 2019 is another excellent release from L’Ira Del Baccano and it’s being released ahead of their upcoming new album which the band will announce in due course.

So the band have decided to release this album to help them with their forthcoming European Tour to promote the album. It’s being offered as a free download but the band are always open to donations to help them on their way.

If you’re a fan of this band already then this is a must have release. If you’re new to the world of L’Ira Del Baccano then this is the perfect release to get yourselves acquainted with one of the finest Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metal bands from the Italian Heavy Rock Underground Scene.

Review

I’ve lost count of the the number of times that I’ve reviewed or featured this LIVE album from Italian Psych/Doom/Stoner Rockers – L’Ira Del Baccano. Si Non Sedes iS - LIVE MMVII is the album that perhaps started my love affair with Instrumental Doom Metal and perhaps the band as well. I first came across this band back in 2008 when I first became aware of the album. L’Ira Del Baccano offered this album as a free download even back then. Even when bands offering free albums was pretty much uncommon compared to now.

The album totally blew my mind with it’s non-stop delivery of epic psychedelic Doom/Stoner Metal sounds that sees the band adding elements of trippy Sludge Rock on the later stages of the album.

Si Non Sedes iS - LIVE MMVII is one of my all-time favourite LIVE albums that I still listen to this day. If you’re a fan of Instrumental Rock/Metal then this is an album you cannot ignore. Songs such as Doomdance, 875 and the intense 18 minute epic Tempus Inane Flago Requiem Spatiumque Furori still has the power to excite and leave you in a hypnotic drugged out trance.

Now in 2018 the band have finally decided to re-release the album on Vinyl. Plus the band have added two songs to the album as well. So you’re treated to almost 70 minutes of top-class Italian Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Metal from one of the best instrumental bands around.

I’ve been a long-time fan and champion of the band and I was kinda honoured when the band asked me to do a press release for this reissue. So I’m going to post what I wrote for the album below. As I feel it best describes the album:

“Why should you be excited for a Vinyl Reissue of a Live Album that was released in 2007 and one that was criminally ignored when it was originally released.. Well the answer is simple. L'Ira Del Baccano released a heavy spaced out and psychedelic classic riff-fest that is Si Non Sedes iS ...LIVE

This live album was ahead of it’s time when it was released. As the band fused heavy doom metal riffs against a Psychedelic Stoner/Space Rock backdrop.

You never really heard anything like this back in 2007/08 which is when I first came across the band. The heavy psychedelic guitars instantly draw you in from the epic opening sounds of DOOMDANCE and right upto the heavy sludgy guitars of the 18 minute epic - Tempus Inane Flago, Requiem Spatiumque Furori . If you’re a fan of Instrumental Psychedelic Stoner Rock then accept no substitute these guys are the real deal and L’IRA DEL BACCANO are your new cosmic overlords that you need in your life right now….”

You know what to do…..

Review

L'Ira Del Baccano (LDB) returns with another round of heavy spaced out instrumental psych doom. Arriving two and a half years since their last album - Terra 42. Paradox Hourglass sees LDB carry on with the subtle psychedelic sounds from that album with a more progressive feel the album is split into four parts - Paradox Hourglass Part One, Paradox Hourglass Part Two, Abilene and The Blind Phoenix Rises.

The first track - Paradox Hourglass Part One - is LBD at their most addictive as they create heavy doom based sounds. The album feels like a natural progression from their last album. As the sound is very familiar if you're already a fan of the band. The instrumental work is superb and LDB show a keen eye for experimentation with their sound. This album isn't as heavy as previous albums as LDB play a more mellow style.

Second track - Paradox Hourglass Part Two - has a more jazz style approach. The song takes time to fully get going but once it does the band don't disappoint with dazzling riffs spliced with the top-notch drumming present throughout the album.

The final two tracks Abilene and The Blind Phoenix Rises is the exciting part of the album as the songs have a fresher feel than the opening two tracks. LDB feel they're having more fun with their music on the final two songs. They have a more interesting dynamic and feel more complete with the heavy instrumental sounds reaching their natural conclusion.

If you're a long time of this great band then no doubt you will find much to enjoy here. If you're new to the world of LDB then this is the best place to start as it offers the most perfect insight of what this band is all about. It's a stylish and heavy psychedelic affair with LDB becoming one of the more interesting Instrumental Psych Rock Bands currently out there.

I will say this is perhaps the best the band have ever sounded on record. The whole feel and mood of the album never feels rushed or forced and that's down to the production of the album. I still prefer Terra 42 to Paradox Hourglass but this is still another great album from LDB. If you're a fan of classic spaced out Hawkwind style riffs merged with a heavy sounding doomy atmosphere then look no further. Paradox Hourglass is the album for you.
