Review

Psych/Space/Stoner Rock collective Red Sun take a major creative risk with their latest album Songs From Hidden Places by moving from their core instrumental sound and adding a vocalist to the mix. Elisa Brusati has joined the band and this gives Red Sun a more mystical and ethereal progressive quality to their music which aligns them more closely to the likes of TOOL and A Perfect Circle from a musical perspective at times.

Elisa’s vocals are quite grounded which gives Red Sun quite a Spaced Out energy compared to their previous albums. Their trademark style of Acid Rock, Psych and Jam based melodies are fully intact but with a heavier presence which fully comes to life very early on within the excellent opening track Hidden Places. There’s some trippy sounds building up behind the scenes as different layers of musical themes overlap each other whilst still being quite low-key and remarkably subdued.

Songs From Hidden Places does take time to find it’s emotional core but it’s a journey worth taking with the lyrics inspired by the likes of WINDHAND which is powered by some epic gloomy soundbytes being played from the instrumental melodies that accompany each track. There are some interesting themes developing within the hard-hitting tracks of Details From The Past. Sleeping Brain and The Hidden Truth.

The album does have a kaleidoscopic sound that’s developed throughout the album where the music constantly evolves with different hooks, riffs and progressive sounds allowing Red Sun fully reinventing themselves for the better. Red Sun perhaps had to change their music to form around Elisa’s superb vocals which can be quite direct one moment and beautifully sincere the next which left me impressed on an emotional level.

The second half of the album does allow Red Sun to play heavier grooves and wonderful ambient synths which can be considered Doomgaze in some aspects with the most powerful moments appearing on tracks such as All Things Are Written There and The Hidden Dope.

Songs From Hidden Places is an emotionally charged record that allows Red Sun to open a highly exciting new chapter for themselves. The record is quite daring but one that offers the listener a highly rewarding experience that you will remember for a very long to come.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Exclusive Album Premiere For Stoner Rockers RED SUN Stunning New Album SONGS FROM HIDDEN PLACES

After three entirely instrumental albums, Red Sun have traced a steady evolution from desert stoner toward increasingly psychedelic horizons, enriched by a growing use of synthesizers and theremin.

'Songs from Hidden Places' marks a turning point: for the first time, the voice of Elisa Brusati (formerly singer of Noema) — who joined the band in 2025 — runs through all seven tracks, grafting the song format onto an already mature sound without betraying its identity. Guitars and bass take a more central role compared to the previous 'From Sunset to Dawn' (2024), while still leaving room for long psychedelic digressions — as in 'Hidden Places' and 'Sleeping Brain' — that keep the band's dreamlike and epic imagery intact.

Thematically, the new album explores those hidden places that belong to us — physical and interior — worn by time but steeped in memories: silent refuges where comfort and catharsis can be found. An idea that also runs through the artwork, based on a concept by drummer Federico Rivoli, who personally carved the song title font and the band's logo into the wall of the old mill in Albone, the Red Sun's historic rehearsal space.

You can listen to the superb new album thanks to the cool folks over at Metaversus PR and Subsound Records.

BIOGRAPHY

Red Sun were formed in 2014 in Albone, between Piacenza and the Emilian Apennines. Within less than a year, Stefano "Eno" Dusi (guitar), Mirco Dugaria (bass), and Federico Rivoli (drums, synth) recorded their self-produced debut album 'Trisophy' (2015), later reissued on vinyl by Spin On Black. After an intense run of live activity across Germany, the UK, Switzerland, and France, their second album 'The Wind, the Waves, the Clouds' (Psyka Records) followed in 2017, alongside the split 'Psychedelic Battles n° 4' (Vincebus Eruptum), shared with Chicago's The Luck of Eden Hall. In 2024 they released 'From Sunset to Dawn' (Subsound Records); in 2025 Elisa Brusati joined as vocalist, leading to 'Songs from Hidden Places' (2026).

Italy-based psych/stoner band Red Sun unveil 'Details from the Past', first single and video from 'Songs From Hidden Places', their upcoming album due for release on Subsound Records on June 19th, 2026.

A lilting, enveloping rhythm harks back to trip-hop, carried by Elisa Brusati's evocative vocals, while guitars, synth, and theremin weave in a psychedelic touch. The song speaks of unknown places explored despite a troubled state of mind — seeking safety in the unknown and in the power of the subconscious.

Review

Instrumental Doomsters L’IRA DEL BACCANO  return after a three year absence with The Praise Of Folly which is another huge sounding SONIC and SPACED OUT expedition into the vast COSMOS. The record is perhaps L’IRA DEL BACCANO’s (LDB) most grounded album to date with the band adding strands of Shoegaze and Post-Rock into the music. They still offer their trademark Space Rock and Doomed Out sound that’s been inspired by the likes of Black Sabbath, Hawkwind and Pink Floyd. L’IRA DEL BACCANO play with a real sense of urgency to this album which allows them to play some of the most direct and fast-paced sounds of their musical career.

The album opens up with the two part title track for The Praise Of Folly Part 1 / Part with doomedelic melodies developing into a great mix of synths, ambient sounds, post-rock dynamics and a haunting cinematic score that’s hidden behind a scorching Stoner Rock/Metal rhythm. Echoes of the band’s musical past and creative legacy feels like it’s being reevaluated and reinvented for a modern audience.

As I can hear brief moments from their previous records being given a more soulful and heavier purpose with L’IRA DEL BACCANO moving ever so closely to their Psych and Space Rock roots. The welcome use of Shoegaze and Post-Rock textures is another wonderful touch with the music having a real dramatic edge with L’IRA DEL BACCANO still delivering a thrilling aspect of Instrumental Rock/Metal.

L’IRA DEL BACCANO play a fantastic “QUIET vs HEAVY” and “LIGHT vs DARK” aspect into their music where you can hear influences as diverse as PELICAN and RUSSIAN CIRCLES within the quieter moments with some epic KRAUTROCK moments being delivered throughout the whole album.

The other two tracks of Stigma and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead allow L’IRA DEL BACCANO to add a cinematic and psychedelic Storytelling edge into their music whilst creating sublime instrumental soundscapes that are equally progressive and uplifting at the same time. The second half of the album has a more aggressive sludgier tone to add a level of grittiness whilst keeping in line with L’IRA DEL BACCANO’s highly creative and majestic vision. The backdrop is filled with hallucinogenic melodies and surreal soundscapes that will blow your entire mind.

The production values are brilliantly realised with the album having a slight “LIVE RECORDING” aspect which is quite ironic since their 2007 classic debut album Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII from 2007 was an actual live album which introduced me to this amazing band. You’ll be surprised by the musical journey that L’IRA DEL BACCANO will take you upon with The Praise Of Folly.

The Praise Of Folly is another masterful record from L’IRA DEL BACCANO and might be my favourite album of theirs yet. This album will no doubt firmly establish the guys as perhaps one of the finest Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metal bands from the underground scene of the modern day age.

The Band says:

" The Praise of Folly part1 is the first of a two chapters, 21 minutes long ,composition inspired by Erasmus of Rotterdam essay Morie Encomium. It's a one-way journey through what we imagined could be the various representations of folly — from its visionary aspect to anger, but also irony and lightness in facing life. The entire song has been recorded live in one, continuous passage for three times and then we decided wich one had the best vibe as a whole, no comping between takes to chase perfection for each section of the song. We wanted to keep the performance and general sound of the main intruments as "real" and LIVE as possible. Then we added some layers to emphasize some passages"

Review

Tempus Deorum is a new split album featuring the talents of Italian Spaced Out Doom Riff Wizards L’IRA DEL BACCANO and Netherlands Doom/Stoner Rockers YAMA. This is YAMA’s first batch of new material in eleven years since the band reformed in 2024. Both bands operate on different ends of the Doom Metal spectrum but are united within their core belief of creating HEAVY GROOVES that have a subtle Space Rock energy to them. Both bands get the perfect opportunity to showcase their musical talents on this epic split release.

Up first is L’IRA DEL BACCANO with their classic track Tempus 25 (Sempiternal Rapture) which is a slightly modified version of the original track Tempus Inane Flago, Requiem Spatiumque Furori which appeared on their classic 2007 Live Album Si Non Sedes Is - Live MMVII which was actually one of the first albums I ever reviewed when I created The Sludgelord blog back in March 2011. So, this track feels like reconnecting with an old friend that you haven’t seen for a very long time.

The song still feels vital and has a modern day sound compared to the original. This is perhaps L’IRA DEL BACCANO’s most famous track with the band playing a spellbinding mix of Psych Rock, Doom Metal, Space Rock and Stoner Metal that’s held together by a cinematic Progressive Rock energy. This version is more stripped back and feels like it’s been built from the ground up with a haunting DRONE aspect which wasn’t heard within the original. The song starts off quietly but slowly transforms into different and heavier DOOMEDELIC passages within its epic nineteen minutes runtime. The instrumental grooves are played to perfection with L’IRA DEL BACCANO once again proving why they’re one of the most essential bands to come out from the Italian Doom/Stoner Metal scene.

Yama are up next with their side of the split record where they offer three new tracks that have a heavier riffier approach compared to L’IRA DEL BACCANO. With flashes of a riff-centric based sound that dives head into a Prog Rock direction compared to their 2014 debut album Ananta. The opening track Wish To Go Under sees Yama have a heavier Progressive Sludge sound with moments of Thrash based energy being played at a thrilling fast pace. The song is quite vivid with flashes of Psychedelic Grooves coming from all corners and angles with Alex Schenkels vocals perfectly leading the HEAVY METAL charge throughout.

The second track from Yama, The Absolute is one built on distorted rhythms and fractured melodies which have a harsh Drone sound slowly emitting from the speakers with the band wisely taking their time in bringing a heavier DOOM/SLUDGE atmosphere which is way heavier than you initially expect. The song can be quite THEATRICAL with Yama using the many ploys of HEAVY METAL dynamics to create the standout track of their batch of songs. The final stages of The Absolute allows Yama to demonstrate a new found style of Progressive Heaviness which results in some splendid instrumental grooves to lose yourself in.

The final track from Yama, Naraka is a stunning Psych/Doom/Stoner Metal based track with the band creating sounds that could have easily fitted on their excellent debut album but this has a more modern sound. As Yama merges Post-Stoner / Post-Doom surroundings with that cinematic sound being applied to a heavier Progressive attitude which ends the song on a triumphant note. I’m hoping that Yama will have more new material to be released in the future, as on this evidence alone, they have sorely been missed.

Tempus Deorum is a must have split-record featuring two great bands that allows them the perfect opportunity to gain a considerable following within their respective genres.

L'Ira Del Baccano fill the A side with a drawn-out 19-minute instrumental psych doom jam. You will feel the heaviness of doom, the psychedelia of an improvised jam and the precision of progressive rock.

Review

Rosa is the new full length album from Italian Sludge/Noise/Stoner Rockers ZOLLE and the band are back with another buoyant new record which is outlandish and offers the listener a brilliantly uplifting good time. Embracing the wilder side of Stoner Metal with a playful attitude with a plethora of Psychedelic Noises, Ambient Sounds and a fantastic sense of Doom-Pop melodies spliced throughout the whole album.

Opening track Pepe feels partially inspired by TORCHE in places but with ZOLLE adding a chaotic energy with Sludge Rock beats that’s quite aggressive and fast paced when it wants to be. Shades of Experimental energy appear that has a slight Melvins vibe but allowing ZOLLE to perform the music they’re wonderfully known for.

Second track Lana continues with the frantic Sludge/Noise Rock theatrics with the heavy pounding drums from Stefano building up a wall of Psychedelic Waves for Marcello to add his jagged guitars that combine for another energetic round of high voltage Sludge/Stoner Rock. ZOLLE have a great talent of writing sublime uplifting songs without the need for harsh abrasive atmospherics and this track proves that point whilst still bringing a fresh round of HEAVY GROOVES to head-bang to.

Third track Toffolette e Zuccherini is a more subdued track with a lush sounding Post-Rock score and exquisite vocals appearing with soulful Doom-Pop melodies soon changing into more heavy based Sludge/Stoner instrumental jams. This is perhaps my favourite track on the album and perhaps one of my favourite ever tracks that I’ve heard from ZOLLE. As the uplifting energy from the track is highly infectious with the track being constantly HEAVY without the need of being HEAVY at the same time.

ZOLLE continues with the Noise Rock angle for the next few tracks of Merda, Pompon and Pois with that aggressive Sludge/Stoner melodic angle that’s being the more dominant attitude of the album which can be quite flashy and overpowering at times. However, the addictive and warm natured energy allows ZOLLE to experiment across the musical spectrum especially with the fabulous vocals that are quite catchy even when set against the Punk Rock backdrop that appears from time-to-time.

The final stages of the album is where the heaviest and surreal moments of the record appear whilst still retaining the zany creative attitude of the earlier stages of the album with tracks such as Confetto, Fiocco Video and Maialini e Maialine being the other standout tracks on an already wild, varied and highly inventive album such as Rosa.

Rosa is perhaps ZOLLE’s most brilliantly original record to date and may end up becoming one of the most exciting and wildest albums to be released this year. Another ALBUM OF THE YEAR contender is right here. Absolutely superb. No question.
