Review

Grizzly vs. Guillotine is the new album from Psych/Prog Stoner Rockers Laser Eyes who released their warped and deliriously entertaining debut album Ganzfield back in 2020. That album showed how the band had a talent for conjuring Psychedelic Stoner grooves packed full of little oddities and sound effects using guitar pedals, FX Pedals, Distorted Rock/Metal sounds for an outlandish style of music.

Well, Laser Eyes have returned with their even crazier follow-up Grizzly v.s Guillotine which sees the band deliver catchy Pop hooks with the distorted Ambience of Doom, Sludge, Noise and Stoner Rock with moments of Progressive heaviness which can be quite trippy withe the demanding Psychedelic nature of the album.

Perhaps not the most straightforward or conventional album to listen to but Laser Eyes deliver music of their aggressive making which fans of Royal Blood, Torche, Mastodon, Red Fang and Genghis Tron will find creative solace in. The album is driven by a modern Stoner Rock/Metal sound with Laser Eyes adding different Hard Rock/Metal building blocks to the party which has a quick rapid fire approach on how the band switches musical styles and tempos within almost every song.

The whole sound of the album is brilliantly technical which allows Lukas and Tom’s to show off with their awesome technical ability where they use multiple styles of blast beats and feedback loops within the standard grooves and trippy extended instrumental jams.

As I said previously, the majority of the songs have a different sound and feeling to each other with Laser Eyes living up to the Prog Rock/Metal tag of their overall sound especially on tracks such as Succubus, Hans von Bärenland, Perseverance and Geburt. The sound is quite diverse on these tracks with flashes of Atmospheric Metal and Sludge Rock appearing whilst being beautifully intense with a cool sounding melodic edge.

Grizzly vs. Guillotine is a concept album “where the clash between Nature and Machine takes centre stage” according to the band themselves and you can tell that through the sublime lyrics and great lyrics that tell this tale. The music can be quite Jagged and Experimental in places but there’s always a killer guitar riff or thrilling drum beat not too far behind to draw you into the action.

The record is expertly produced whilst offering moments of pure raw Punk Rock/Stoner Metal energy to shine through. The Psychedelic parts are what impressed me the most at how epic and cinematic in scope they actually sound. Grizzly vs. Guillotine delivers on all fronts with Laser Eyes delivering one of the craziest Stoner Rock/Metal albums I’ve heard in quite some time.

This is an unexpectedly heavy and brilliantly twisted delight from start to finish which could allow Laser Eyes to build up a fearsome reputation within the Stoner Rock Underground scene.
