Review

Wicked Upon You is the latest EP from Noise/Stoner Rock duo Wyoming Young And Strong with the band building upon the great work of their previous releases especially their excellent 2021 debut full length Black Wire. This EP takes inspiration from bands such as Shellac, Whores, TORCHE and SLEEP for a messed up blend of hypnotic grooves and catchy aggressive vocals with a sense of gloomy despair within the whole EP.

Wicked Upon You only lasts for around eighteen minutes but Wyoming, Young And Strong providing a captivating back-line in ferocious Noise Rock atmospherics within the sublime opening track Tursulas which is dominated by an almost down-tuned sounding Sludge/Stoner Groove and killer vocals from both members shouting with reckless abandonment.

The whole EP is quite gloomy but the band deliver STADIUM SIZED riffs that have a Big Influence/Melvins flow to them especially on tracks such as Burned Path and Grey Blade. However, Wyoming Young And Strong stand their own creative ground when the distorted Psychedelic movements appear which gives a more claustrophobic feeling to the record.

The final song Space Wizard is the most STONER based track on the EP which is perhaps my favourite track with its twisted delivery and catchy grooves dominating the play yet again. The EP moves into a Punk Rock delivery whilst keeping its Noise Rock aspect alive and well but the Sludge/Stondr Metal twin attack from the band even moves into AMPLIFIER DISTORTION territory. This allows the production values of the EP to be quite unapologetic and even quite welcoming at the same time.

Overall, Wicked Upon You is quite an exciting and turbo-charged release that allows Wyoming Young And Stoner to build their reputation even further within the Stoner Rock/Metal underground scene. I’m hoping for another full length release from this highly talented duo in the near future though until then, this great EP will do.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
